Which one would it be?

#3 5 years ago

It's probably not a classic yet, but I need to pick up another LoTR someday - my wife STILL bags on me for selling it...

#4 5 years ago

Meteor

#5 5 years ago

Orbitor 1

#6 5 years ago

Now with a poll. Wish I could add more than nine.
Nine Ball and Stingray honorably mentioned.

#7 5 years ago

Doh!!!
And Orbitor 1

#8 5 years ago

And how do you forget Cheetah...

#9 5 years ago

Another vote for Orbitor 1!

#10 5 years ago

Catacomb for sure. It's so cerebral, I love it!!

Oribtor 1 is horrible.

I'd go Flight 2000....but one of the first machines i remember playing is a Gamatron.

#13 5 years ago

Viper

#14 5 years ago

From what I played I liked Flight 2000 and Stars.

#16 5 years ago

The reason I voted for F2K, is because I only have one classic Stern... And it's F2K.

#17 5 years ago

The reason I'm asking is i thinking of adding one to my collection with limited space. So far I'm stuck between Seawitch, Star Gazer, Catacomb and ah crap forgot to add her to the poll... Iron Maiden.

Always wanted to try Iron Maiden and want a new one made after the band.

#19 5 years ago

StarGazer...by far

#20 5 years ago

You forgot Split Second, my favorite classic Stern. Designed by Harry Williams by the way and a fun, fun player.

Catacomb or seawitch

Oh yeah that's a good one for sure!

#23 5 years ago

Orbitor1 for sure.

#24 5 years ago

Lightning hands down. Although that split second looks very interesting.

Whats the story behind Harry Williams designing games for Stern?

#26 5 years ago

Catacomb is a really cool game, and I like its Artwork - including the cabinet

#27 5 years ago

Back in the day, I can remember going on several service calls on Flight 2000 having cashboxes overflowing with quarters!

#28 5 years ago

Catacomb, Seawitch or Stargazer

#29 5 years ago

One ball - Stargazer
Multiball - Catacomb

Whats the story behind Harry Williams designing games for Stern?

Harry Williams and Sam Stern, (Gary Stern's father) were partners at Williams and from what I understand, also friends. Williams Manufacturing was later sold and Sam Stern went on to buy Chicago Coin turning it into Stern Electronics.

According to Wikipedia, Stern hired Williams out of retirement to design games.

Harry Williams also designed several other games for Stern including: Flight 2000, Big Game, Ali, Galaxy, Cheetah and Dracula.

Cool stuff and I wish I knew more.

Seawitch for me, just a fun drop target game with great flow.

Here you go! there is no easy answer... they are all fun and différente. Pick up just one is a big mistake! I owe 4 in this time.. almost 5

#33 5 years ago

Definitely Stars. Been looking for that one for a while.

#34 5 years ago

Bearing in mind that Orbitor 1 is a unique game and no other manufacturer made anything like it, I'd have to say this one... otherwise my collection would lack this uniqueness... All other manufacturers made flat-playfield games, so I can have my fill of these from these

How come this unique game is not in the voting list?

If the question was: 'What do you think is the best classic Stern?' the answer could be different... To be honest I think I'd still pick the mighty Orbitor 1 though!

I should have known uniqueness was going to play a factor...
I was mostly going for great players because I have space limitations.

I fully agree

I think having a pin named after a chastity belt is way cooler than after a band

#38 5 years ago

where the hell is Orbitor 1? that is my vote. Most unique out of the box thinking ever done on pinball. Kudos to that design team.

#39 5 years ago

Orbitor is pretty cool, it's just to bad the playfield is so sparse, it could have been alot more amazing, but there's basically nothing to shoot at...

#40 5 years ago

true, but it's the first and only of it's kind. if it would have continued, they could have done some amazing things with it.

same with p2k. Amazing unique design, but never got a chance to really take off.

#41 5 years ago

I still love my Nugent that's been in the family since I was 5 or so. Everyone else hates it and it gets very little play when friends are over playing other pins in my collection - but they're all just missing out

#42 5 years ago

If we take O1 out of the equation, I'd go for Cheetah,,, It's a great player and also looks amazing!Backglass.jpg

#43 5 years ago
Quoted from tomdotcom:

but there's basically nothing to shoot at...

Picking the DT's off at the back of the playfield while reading the 'land' through the spinning disks is quite a challenge though!! There's quite a few of 'em to aim at

#44 5 years ago

actually the yellow target is the main item you want to hit, and is impossible to hit without some damn dumb luck.

#45 5 years ago

I wish there was a way to change the poll. Galaxy sucking the bag with no votes should be changed to Orbitor 1 and Lightning with only one vote should be changed to Cheetah. Not sure the Nug would make the cut however.

That looks like a dude.

Kinda does. Besides the font that's easily the most lack luster glass...Big Game is even better.

#48 5 years ago

should have had something sexy like Catacombs backglass. That's one of early Sterns best. Stargazer's backglass is fantastic as well. It's the reason I bought and NOS SG backglass. I don't even own the game.

You spent some time in Thailand I take it

Couldn't agree more, Catacomb has my favorite cabinet art, followed by Dracula (also Stern) and Silverball Mania.
