I think this could be as stellar as AC DC is. Plenty of great fun music to play to and great iconic art and objects to use for the layout. Can't wait to play "Got Me Under Pressure" multiball

Not a fan, but that drawing would make an awesome backglass. Would probably sell fairly well. Not as broad appeal as ACDC.
Grab a P-Roc and do one yourself. I might have to do my own Iron Maiden if Stern doesn't soon.

    #3 6 years ago

only if they use music from their first 7 albums exclusively.

    #4 6 years ago

The pin's got legs......it knows how to use them

    #5 6 years ago

How come nobody ever suggests a music pin featuring Air Supply?

Sorry but it would have to go to 8. Eliminator can not be Eliminated

ZZ top are strictly a theater/state fair act these days. They haven't really been popular for about 25 years and haven't had anything close to a hit since Rollergames was new. Nobody under the age of 40 is gonna be familiar with their look, songs, and act.

    So...horrible, horrible idea.

    Also a terrible idea.

And I like ZZ top (though it's disappointing to watch Billy Gibbons lip sync his way through half their shows these days)

    #9 6 years ago

    But... we already have HS2!

    #10 6 years ago

I respectfully disagree. I just saw them a year ago and definitely was not lip synced. They still draw crowds and there was young and old alike jamming to classic tunes.

I think all your arguments could have been used for AC/DC before it was made as well. Old band without newer hits. They both have fun but rocking songs and infectious music that would make for a great pinball experience.

But if you look at the photo at the top of this thread, it's clear they're wearing rugs from The Big Lebowski. Doesn't that add to their pin-awesomeness?

    #12 6 years ago

I like both bands but have to agree on the waning popularity of ZZ Top and don't agree that it would make a good pin.

ZZ Top ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units. ZZ Top has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

AC/DC had sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71 million albums in the United States alone, making them the fifth-best-selling band in the United States and one of the world's best-selling bands of all time

ZZ-Top would be my top #1 pick for next pin.
Keep it old school with DMD dot-art, no LCD needed.

The last album La Futura is fantastic, just saw ZZ a couple months ago, packed house, great show. This could be an epic pin- 40years of blues, pop, grunge, rock to pick from. So many global hits, these guys tour Europe all the time.

I love to see Stern do this pin, except for the cheap metal cabinet head they started using for ST and Mustang. I hope AC/DC and Metallica are not the last with the classic wood head.

Art would be key, I could see Kevin O' Connor knocking this out of the park.

ZZ Top was a great band, but their last good album was Degüello in 1979.

Their drum machine and synthesizer drenched, anti-blues sell out known as Eliminator was embarrassing to say the least.

I totally agree, that's the first thing I thought when I saw it! It's a gorgeous drawing. It would be great with individual flash lamps and GI, not a dull light bar. As for the theme, I'm not sure. I, too love the band, but don't know how it would be translated into and interesting pin. I'd hope to be proven wrong, though!

Closest you're going to get is Getaway or BTTF (it plays Doubleback if you travel back to 1885 during Multiball)

I think all your arguments could have been used for AC/DC before it was made as well.

You are definetly wrong. On most "eliminator" and onwards songs - the ones with massive backing tracks of synths like Sharp Dressed Man and Pincushion - the lead vox have been lip synced for years. The beard makes it super easy lol.

And those arguments certainly could NOT have been made for ACDC, that's ridiculous and makes no sense. When the pinball machine was in development, ACDC was coming off a huge #1 multiplat album in Black Ice (it was the biggest selling rock release the year it came out), and a sold out tour of gigantic arenas and even football stadiums.

ZZ Top like I said hasn't tasted that kind of success since Dukakis was running for President.

ZZ Top is largely forgotten today by the masses as anything other than a pop culture footnote. Their albums don't sell at all, and they play casinos, theaters, and state fairs. You cannot compare ZZ Top's current popularity to ACDC's in any way shape or form.

If you need your ZZ top pin fix play HS2, BTTF, or Lethal Weapon 3. It's a terrible idea for a new pin release and it will never happen. There are dozens of rock acts that would make more sense.

Respectively if we are going down the road of ZZ Top you might as well put a groups like Van Halen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Doors or Meatloaf, Nirvana, Pearl Jam on the list, I can't see any company going foward with a project like this... Thou ZZ Top is a great choice for a music pinball theme and the artwork would be great (like Iron Maidon) for sure and definately a lot of people like their music.

If any music pin will be made it has to have much more mass appeal like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Aeosmith, Def Leppard... The later two are even a strech in that...

    RUSH!!!!

Rush has the passionate fanbase with disposable income and will sell machines in a frenzy like Met LE!!!

omg zz top sucks. can't wait to change the station.

average pinsider age must range 50-65. i don't get it.

    Bauhaus obviously.

ZZ Top is a fine band...but it would just make me think of LW3 everytime.

That's what i was getting at with my comment but i meant to say 6, with deguello being the last good album. For some reason, the zz top six pack has el loco on it and not deguello even though deguello is before it. My bad.

    high 30's here.

Out of all ideas for a band Pin ZZ Top is probably top ten,but not #1. The concept art would work, the music would work, but about fifteen years too late in their market ability. Older acts now non existent like Zeppelin, Pink Floyd "The Wall" ( Roger Waters was still in the Band) and The Beatles would be front runners for a pin as they went out on top and still hold that mystique.

What? Who said I wanted Eliminator onward? I want from #1 through Eliminator. Don't see how that got misconstrued. Eliminator is their best selling album and was deemed Diamond Status with over 10 million copies sold. If I made the pin I would not leave off thier best selling album and songs of all time. That would be dumb.

The arguments could easily be made. Black Ice (which I own) was their first album in eight years when it was released and their best selling album in much much longer than that. I'm not trying to say ZZ Top is as popular because they clearly aren't. AC/DC is one of my favorite all time bands and the greatest concert I've ever seen! I do believe anyone would be hard pressed to ask a general music fan if they know any singles off the Black Ice album though even given it's popularity. But the big length between albums and the years they were really popular are the points I was making.

ZZ Top is not forgoten either. I just asked my 19 and 20 year old employees if they know them. They not only knew them they knew their music and liked it. One only listens to country music exclusively. Her comment was "I only listen to country music and I like them and know who they are" No I didn't make that up. I just mentioned to her that I had a thread up here for fun advocating a ZZ Top pinball and it was her comment to me.

Just looking for people to have fun with this, not point out how wrong I am. Feel free to do that if you wish though. I still stand by my original post. I think it would be a fun machine and fun is what sells pinball.

Edit: It looks like you edited your thread and removed the Eliminator onward line. I guess you figured out that wasn't my statement. I just wan't peole to know what I was talking about above.

    #27 6 years ago

Everyone thinks everything they like and the public has a passing interest in would make a great pinball theme, even if they are really off base.

I like to point out how wrong people are when they do this.

    It's fun.

Fun is what sells pinball machines.

They should make pointing out how others' pinball theme ideas are bad into a pinball machine.

The call outs on that would be amazing! Get Ritchie to do it with that cool deep voice he uses on AC/DC

Billy F. Gibbons has a super cool speaking voice, and probably would be willing to do call outs.

Put together a fast design, great rules, art with a large song selection, then plenty of pins would sale.

See below, lastest album "La Futura" actually peaked higher then Eliminator, and I do think it is one of their best.

"ZZ Top’s first studio album in a lengthy nine years, La Futura, enjoyed a major showing on the Billboard 200 chart this week, landing at No. 6 and selling 31,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Congratulations, guys!

La Futura’s first-week sales showing at No. 6 is actually the highest sales week to date for ZZ Top. The last time the Texas trio entered the Billboard’s Top 10 was in 1992 with their Greatest Hits compilation, which topped out at No. 9."

    #36 6 years ago

No more music pins! My God, how many are there now?

And no more movie pins either.

Can't Stern do something creative? Look at all the bizarre titles Williams/Bally put out that had nothing to do with either music or movies.

I know.. it's all about money.. but man, I miss the creative titles of old!

We've got ES, WW.. what about TSUNAMI!!

Now I know you are just reaching here but nobody should be talking Billboard rankings these days, especially when trying to compare them with "the old days."

I guarantee you "Eliminator" sold about 10 times what Futura did in it's first first week regardless of where it was ranked. Maybe 20. Soundscan rankings are pretty irrelevant these days. Selling 2,000 copies of something can get you in the top 200, 30 years ago that would have been a joke.

    #38 6 years ago

Bottom line, if a great ZZ Top pin was produced, it would sell plenty, and has potential to be a long term classic just like the band.

OMG!!!! Could there be a more boring band?!!? I don't mean to rag on RUSH and I know their fans are rabid as hell (there truly is no accounting for taste) but some of these ideas people throw out for music pins are just ridiculous. What would the main toy be? A 7000 piece drum kit?

Off the top of my head, Presto magic area, Roll the Bones dice mode, Moving Pictures art mode, Red Barchetta car chase, Clock Work Angels clock mode ala Twilight Zone and on and on. I'm sure if I had time I could come up with tons off cool Rush pinball stuff.

    rush = music about science!

    amazing musicians/crappy songs

greatest hits could be rolled into 3 songs

I think AC/DC plays great. I haven't been impressed with any of the other band themed pins.

I don't think i'd own any of them, personally. I like ZZ Top but I think it would be a terrible pin.

I love to play pinball with music that keeps me moving and singing with it. AC/DC does that and so would ZZ Top.
Metallica really does not do this for me, but I still like the pin.

I understand. You could probably ask 100 different people which band theme would be the best and are likely to get near as many different answers. I'm just not into the band theme, I guess. All the bands I like i've bought their stuff on cassette tape, CD and now digital format. I'm not sure i'm ready totake the leap and purchase their pinball as well, lol.

I'll say it again, we don't need anymore licenses for movies/music etc. Come up with an original theme, artwork, music, and sounds.

Some of those, I like the gameplay and some I like the art and on some I even like the music. I just haven't played one that nailed it on all three yet. At the prices they are going for now, i'll be content to play them on location.
