We’ve all seen insert decals sold and used in games. Sometimes they look ok. Sometimes they bubble up. And you need to totally scrape off old worn print for the new decal to look ok.

What about a decal that’s more like a stencil? You stick it down over the insert and use a sharpie to stencil down the missing insert lettering. Then peel up the stencil decal when done?

I’ve never had good results with sharpies on plastic with light shining through. I find I get uneven results and have uneven light bleed through.

Not saying it can’t be done, I just think it would be difficult to get excellent results.

I wondered about crisp edges. I think that would have to do w the adhesive of the decal I suppose.

Wonder how these would work: https://customrubontransfers.com

I think those are more along the lines of a normal decal.

They are not a decal, they are screen printed with adhesive.

You can see then used on a shooter gauge here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/williams-1954-spitfire-restoration-complete

Myself, I'd cut a stencil with the Silhouette Cameo and airbrush it. You can see examples of that in the post above too.

Createx has the 4030 balancing clear additive now, that should toughen up the paint.

Sharpie while looking opaque on paper looks terrible on playfield inserts with lamps shining up through. As an example, draw around a worn insert with a sharpie, looks great, turn game on, it's as if you didn't do it at all.

Even with black touchup paint it's 2-3 layers to get the light blocking.
