Have any of you seen an IDC connector get so hot it desoldered itself? I was playing my BF Saturday afternoon and smelled the familiar odor of melting wire. I turned off the machine and this is what I saw...

Desoldered what was left and cleaned up the holes on the board. New connectors installed and all is well.(And no, I wasn't the hacker that wired theis connector up the first time.)

Wow that's cool. Its like the machine was trying to heal itself.

Sure, take a look at any GI connector on a sys11 Williams.

You know, that Williams "quality".....

Yep! By detaching itself it definitely kept more issues from occuring.

Common problem, did you replace with IDC again or the crimp style?

#6 11 years ago

Gotta love that, very nice!

Congrats, you found the electron leak.

Once connections start to degrade and resistance increases so does the heat which accelerates the breakdown even more. IDC connectors "work" and are fast to use but I like crimped connections.

Any pics of crimp style? I bought a big box of these IDC's from Pinballlife.com a while back. As I begin to run low I will probably order the connector of choice on Pinside.

You need to count the number of pins to determine which one you'll need.

Do a search for .156 connector

Just buy the longest ones and cut the ones you don't need off with a box cutter. with a sharp blade you can get it nice and square. Also make sure you get key pins.

Buy the correct pin diameter for your connector and something to crimp it with.
Also you should get a few of the plastic " index pin / key" to insert into the correct blocked pin hole in your connector.

Those do look better. I will begin to replace the old ones with these...hopefully I won't need them too often.

Make sure that you get the trifurcon connectors...not just the plain molex ones. They come in 2 sizes too, by the way.

#15 11 years ago

Definitely get the trifurcons, I should have been more clear.

I always buy some male pin headers, crimp connectors and the indexing pins and blank sockets when I order stuff. GPE is a class act and has great stuff and pricing.

You can spend $50 At GPE and get some of everything you could possibily need for a home collector. Thats what I did and I've never needed a component or connector I didn't already have.....so far, knock on wood.
