OK be kind, it's sentimental. I grew up playing Star Explorer at my Grandparents house since the age of 5. I just happened to be browsing on craigslist and found one seeming to be in decent shape considering it's cheap sears quality.
Anyway, I got the thing cleaned up, sound working all solenoids are firing well. Only problem is the scoring. It counts from 100 - 900 then resets to 00 again in a loop. When holding the reset button 88800 is displayed but never when playing. When the game is turned on it will display a higher score until it's reset. I'm guessing it's just a bad solder joint or something stupid like that but to troubleshoot I'd like to test the counter. There are a few IC's labeled 165-1, I can't find them anywhere to cross reference. Only thing I could find on them based on the logo was they were manufactured by solid state scientific. They appear to be a 7 segment driver of some sort but without a data sheet I'm not sure of the pinout to test the them.
Anyone happen to know of a replacement IC or seen a similar problem on these?
Thanks!

Repair information, manuals, and schematics are here:

Thanks, I've been looking around for a few days now and that's where I pulled most of the tips to get the machine where it's at. I've checked all the solder joints and they are fine. Need the data sheet on the IC's.

The board schematic shows them to be 4433 chips. These chips are the led digit driver chips and have been obsolete for a very long time. Very difficult to find them nowadays too.

Updating this old thread. I have added some more information to the Score Displays section at the pinwiki for these machines.

Check out chips IC 105 (type CD4013) and IC 101 (type CD4093) if the score displays do not add correctly.

Thanks for posting schematics and decoding the chip number. The 4426/4433 chips can source much more current but appear to be otherwise pin and voltage compatible with 4026/4033. Perhaps they could be substituted in a pinch for a low current application, or paired with a few external drive transistors now that we know what the chip does.
