I think I really messed up my power/driver board

    Before you read this: Yes, I am a soldering noob. I know my actions were not smart at all.

    Long story short, I tried to replace my left flipper coil (of my lotr) with the upgraded pinball life coil. I had the wires backwards. It then blew the fuse. I replaced the fuse, corrected the wiring and it still did not work. The transistor Q15 was not testing correctly and I replaced it with IRL540N. I had an unbelievable time getting the old one out and I think I managed to melt / burn the needed traces. Do you all have any repair suggestions. Have I ruined the board?
    Please take it easy and I realize that I probably should have stopped while I was ahead.

    Not a total waste.

    Put in new transistor. Learn to solder. Run jumpers from traces to each transistor leg. Verify work with a meter.

    Next time, cut transistor body off, heat solder gently and remove legs one at a time.

    Yes, also been there, done that, you are not alone here. But it is still repairable.

    Been there as well. Still occasionally find myself there. Desoldering kills me. I've read before to find a junk board and practice on it. I can also tell you that a neat jumper job doesn't look too bad, and if it brings the machine back to life, then you've made a successful repair. Maybe not a borygard repair, but at least you are up and running.

    Good luck. For me, I know if I've nuked the solder pads, its really hard for me to get the component to set back in solidly.

    Yep, nuking the solder pads is about the best description of what happened. I was just getting more and more frustrated watching the solder run to the other side.

    Does anybody have decent pics of a decent jumper job? I obviously need to do a little more homework anyway. And this showed me that I need a new/smaller soldering tip.

    yeah i screwed some stuff up with my soddering gun. it has a pretty fat tip and 100/140 watts which is too much. found a 30 watt one at a garage sale for 2 bucks with a fine tip cant wait to try it out

    You're going to need to clean all that gunk up before you proceed.

    Sand lightly, then use naphtha or alcohol to remove the old flux residue. Get your traces cleaned up and see which ones are broken.

    Solder to original through holes as much as possible. Jumper from the FET legs as necessary to another component leg on that trace. If you try to tack solder to a small trace, you might have more problems, and that's not the best solution anyway.

    When you connected the coil backwards, you blew the FET =and= you blew the flipper coil diodes. Cut them off, and replace with 1N4004 diodes. Note the orientation as the band on the diode indicates polarity. VERY important.

    You can not operate the game until both the FET and the coil diodes are replaced.

    It's an easy repair with the right tools and experience...without them...well...consider a local more experienced pin-friend or a qualified repairman or send it to a qualified board repair guy...Rob, Clive, me.

    Learn to solder and desolder on old scrap pcb boards. After you master the skills you can work on your valuable pinball boards.

    Same with trace repairs. Don't waste good boards.
