Nothing more fun then driving a slow car fast. Our weekend wonder had 75hp at one time….485k on it, so I doubt it’s pushing that now.

Just picked this up today. Unfortunately, the weekends around here are just about gone for the year. But that should give me time to work on the little things until spring.

61. 62 doesn't have the different color coves or the 3 metal stakes coming out of the side vent in the coves.

So i’ve narrowed it down. Kinda. It’s the classic “pinball decision” where you either go for the gusto and buy that MM you always wanted, or spend the same on a couple B titles like a FT and a BSD. Insert your own made up example, i like all those.
Grail for me is a Gen 2 Viper. Checks pretty well all the boxes including the “will kill you” box. But i could spend about the same on a C3 and a late 70’s Firebird. Will not necessarily go out and buy two at once but if you knew me well you wouldnt be surprised if it happened close together lol. The two car option are cruisin cars. neither will win a race but thats ok to me.
So here is a new poll for those bored of price bubble, Spooky bashing and/or alternate kman account trolling threads…

Gen 2 Viper is the most well behaved car I’ve ever driven.
It’s a really well balanced car and with so much torque on hand there’s nothing that will surprise you. All control is beneath your foot.
And due to that people with zero control will crash them like they’ve always done.
It’s not because the car is bad in any way, it’s because they’re shitty drivers. Inexperienced with what a stiff chassis combined with large tires will do if you try to slide it.

It’s a truly great car to drive and it’s a fantastic beginners car on the track in my opinion.
Just don’t floor it while turning because that’s what gets you. Which shouldn’t be surprising but people do suck at driving thus giving them this unfair reputation.

Gen 2 Viper is my holy grail and I’m happy to own one.

Beautiful Cutlass

My new "all week" fun car.. Getting it street legal is a pain in the ass, but it's getting done. I will be able to go anywhere.

That and no nanny controls. That’s what gets most people. Vettes and other cars have had the feature for years and most people never turn them off. The newer gen v’s you have to disable it.

I’ve been told it’s because of side curtain airbags.
Gen V didn’t have it and they became mandatory so it would involve a complete redesign of the roof. On a car that barely got sold.
Thus to the grave it went.
But there’s probably a lot of story’s of why but one thing is certain, it sold poorly. And now they are worth their weight in gold.

I am surprised they actually got the Gen V engine street legal. Passed all emissions with an 8.4 V10 is impressive

Was great to look through this post as I’m starting to go car shopping.

I’m having a problem though with deciding as I still love my daily driver that I bought new in 2013, my Mustang GT 5.0 /Gotta Have It Green. I’ve kept it pretty much stock besides upgrading the exhaust, I love how it growls loud.

Trying to keep the next vehicle purchase under $130k

Considering possibly a BMW M8 although I know maintenance is not cheap.

Also considering the new Cadillac CT5 Blackwing. Buiilt out one today on the Caddy website to get an idea of cost. I must admit I like flashy colors as you can tell from my Mustang I’d much rather there be some other color options for both the CT5 and BMW M8

Thus why I also like this Toyota Tundra that is at a local dealership I’m thinking about

Whatever I choose I feel like it has to trump my Mustang. Or at the very least I’ll keep the Mustang for my Sunday driver.

Decisions decisions decisions

My dream car I will own someday…hopefully sooner than later is a 1981 Delorean, thanks to those for sharing your pics

I always wondered why they didn't sell better. It seemed popular enough. Plenty of press in magazines and everyone knew what it was. Even had it's own tv show. They looked great and had a unique engine. Probably just came down to price and it was still a Dodge.

But it is one heck of a car.
Reliability is beyond this world.
I’ve had mine for 6,5 years.
Many track days and I beat the shit out of it.
The synchros in the trans are beginning to get worn from all of my WOT shifting.
Other than that I’ve replaced one lower A arm in the front (hairline crack), one window regulator and now I have to fix my outside door handle (the button don’t work).
That’s it.

I know a gen2 Viper with the equivalent of almost 30k miles on track with nothing other than oil and brake changes.
They are the definition of a maintenance free car.

I have had 4 vipers, as early as 1996 i had a 92 r/t. In 2000 i had a 98 gts. right before covid i had a 96 gts ,sold that and bought a 99 gts acr. all my vipers had under 10,000 miles and as low as 6,000 miles. The are like taking a 50 caliber gun to a pistol range...... They look cool as heck, they have tons of power! (low by todays standards) My impression was you could not fully get on the gas as the car was uncontrollable and had wheel hop bad ! no traction control, just raw power. my 96 had the rohe supercharger and the 99 had twin turbos that put down almost 900 hp to the rear tires. I have had a few testarossas, lambo gallaro, nissan gtrs, mclaren 600 lt and now a new nsx. I would love to find another 96-99 gts, but prices are insane. i looked at a 17 gts acr 3 years ago and you could buy one for 130,000 ish. now they are 225-275. They are a fun car, they look awesome, but they are no super car thats for sure. its was a tough sale trying to sell a dodge brand product for what the msrp was back then. Now a hellcat is 100 g. crazy times

Original owner of this 99 R/T. Drove it off the lot with 6 miles on it. Whether it was n/a, supercharged, or TT (which it is now) it is ridiculously fun and has always been trouble-free… except when I caused the trouble!

Currently being de-tuned with a fresh block since I don’t race it anymore. Haven’t decided if a 6-speed will go back in or if the Turbo 400 will stay in it. TBD. But I haven’t met a 6-speed that I didn’t strip the gears out of!

A stock Viper does not have wheel hop.
In fact I can floor it in first while rolling with no issues at all. A little tire slippeage when WOT shifting to second and off you go.
No it’s no super car but if you know how to drive one you can give brand new Porsche 911s a run for the money at the track.
In the hands of a competent driver even an old GTS is a fast car on the track - by todays standards.
Sounds like all you did was modify the engines and not actually use it for what it’s for, the track.
It is REALLY good on the track. Not the best but it’s a good car.
With so much low end torque it’s also beginner friendly as there’s no need to hunt gears. Exit a turn at 2,5k RPM and it will still pull hard. Shift at 5k or 6k doesn’t really matter as it’s got so much torque anyways.

Are Deloreans over $130k now? I haven't priced in a long time, but those used to be quite a lot less.

A buddy of mine recently paid 70K for an example with less than 500 miles.
I’m guessing most DeLoreans would be in the 30-50k range.

Did you buy anything op?

Not yet but i know what i want. Which is close to what i’ll get lol. I love the lines of the Gen 2 Viper GTS. But its a coupe and that’s not what the mrs wants. So RT/10 it is. What she actually wants is a convertible which would really mean i would want a Gen3. And while many viper enthusiasts would say the gen 3 is the least desirable, i don’t hate on it at all and i include ‘03 to ‘06 in my search. I just wish they didn’t abandon the clamshell hood which is one of my fav things. Like i see my self going to a show and parking there with hood up admiring it in a lawnchair lol. When it comes to pinball i stopped considering what the family say they would like. They don’t play based on theme nor care in general. But with the car i’m pretty sure ignoring the one thing she asked for would be an asshat move.

Just got back from a trip to Canada and while there was checking out autotrader.ca. With the current exchange it may be worth it to import one (i severely doubt any have seen snow and still have a clean title). I follow some viper forums and people keep saying prices are crashing. Doesnt seem obvious to me when im looking at car listings, though i would say things have softened a bit. I was tempted by this ‘03 near Richmond, VA. Originally listed for 55, dropped all the way down to 40k. Clean title but 6 owners and over 60k miles. Which is actually a lot of miles for a viper. I dont see it anymore so i snoozed too long i guess. But if i learned anything from collecting pinball machines - another one will come around in time and when it feels right i’ll jump on it.

RT/10 is definitely a lot more obtainable than a GTS when considering the price.
A fen3 is as you say the least desirable and it does not fall into my taste at all.
But the Gen3 is a much better car.

GTS is the best investment but also the most expensive.
RT/10 is a decent investment while still buying a Gen2 for the classic lines.
The gen3 is not an investment (doubt it will be but you never know) but it’s the best car.

If you can buy a Gen4 instead of the Gen3.

I’ve driven all generations and Gen2 is where it’s at for me.
I don’t care if a Gen4 ACR is better than the Gen2 GTS because that tickles my sensitive parts.

60k miles is a lot for a Viper but at the same time it really isn’t.
It’s just that a lot of the owners are pretentious and refuses to drive their cars.

Are you in Canada?
For Gen2 you definitely want an export version which is a Chrysler Viper, VIN starts at 1C instead of 1B as the Domestic Dodges have. I’m glad I have a 1C car (Chrysler) as it has the KPH speedo along with rear fog lights, DRL etc all that is demanded the retrofitted to any 1B car over here.
Some say they have a different PCM and is down tuned to only 400hp but I doubt that. I’ve compared several 1C cars to 1B and they all haul ass like they should.

I’m Canadian though living/working in the US for 5 years now. I go up to visit family a couple times per year and this time decided to look at Viper pricing relative to the exchange rate these days. I don’t know the used viper market well and, just like pinball, i am not looking for a ridiculous deal. Fair price for a fair car, everyone happy kind of thing. And similar to pinball, everyone wishes they got into the hobby earlier!!

The insight you share into this car is appreciated. Ideally i’ll find a decent 01/02 because i don’t think ABS is a terrible option. But its not a deal breaker. I love this color combo, though if im not mistaken it was only available for the 2000 model year:

The insight you share into this car is appreciated. Ideally i’ll find a decent 01/02 because i don’t think ABS is a terrible option. But its not a deal breaker. I love this color combo, though if im not mistaken it was only available for the 2000 model year:[quoted image]

A Viper is far from rocket science.
They’re bullet proof.
If you buy a Gen2 make sure to replace the PS pump pulley to an aluminium one to avoid being stranded, and that’s about the only weak part of the whole car.
ABS is nice, but the pre “ABS & cream puff” engines (96-99) has that magical “708 cam”, basically they have a rougher cam amongst other stuff like forged internals.
