Quorra is a funny shot.
Some games I can nail that spinner shot after shot... other games, brick after brick.

Yep!, that is exactly what I'm doing tonight. When I got home, I thought 'Hey!' I'm gonna at least see what this Quorra multi-ball is... (is it 4 balls?)... just excited to find out. And so on my first game I got all 5 shots thru the 3 balls that I played and it drained on the 5th shot before multi-ball could start... (oops, I'm sorry, I think I am suppose to hit the arcade after the 5 shots to get my reward.)... Anyways, I drained.

Since it was my first game coming from home I can certainly do this again and again. NOPE!

Taking a break right now and checking what the folks on pinside are up to. Tron can wait for the moment. I will beat it in an hour or so.

YES!.... Hit Quorra Mulit-Ball for the first time since I've owned this machine (1 year).....

That was fun. Only 2 balls though?... Well, I never hit it before. I was expecting 4 balls plus 2 extra balls that I figured were hidden in the portal somewhere that I have never been.... was expecting a bright light to shine on the machine and suck me into the real Tron experience....

Was still a lot of fun...... hit 24 million without trying.

"BALL ADDED". You'll figure it out. Glad to see you've got the game working as it should.

#56 10 years ago

Congrats on Quorra MB. Once your in the mode keep shooting at her to score good points and make the insert turn solid, which eventually you will need to get to portal. Your missed shots to Quorra will usually hit the target bank and the add a ball feature will kick in. Keep practicing at it and dont forget to go for Gem every time it comes around to the upper flipper. The Quorra-Gem combo has become a very satisfying shot for me.

Spinner does extend the Gem timer. Love trying to keep that mode running as long as possible.

Guess I never noticed since it's habit to Quorra -> Gem a lot when gem is running anyways...

Looking very forward to sucking at Tron after this weekend.

#59 10 years ago

I sucked at Tron tonight and it was still great. Seriously, it dominated me and sent me running and cussing. Love it.

Man, that is the absolute truth. It's almost like you play one game and nail it non-stop, then play another and it's like the Quorra loop moved over an inch or something.

I think anyone who has owned a Tron can say they've spent their fair share of sucking. Game seems so frickin' easy but for some reason it's just so hard sometimes. It does have that magical lure that keeps you coming back though, and it's kinda like golf. You can put up 17 double bogeys in a row, suck big time and vow that you're never going to play another round of golf ever again, but then you sink that 30 foot birdie putt on 18 and you can't wait to get back on the course and you tell your friends golf is the best game that's ever been invented.

Sometimes I'll put up 17 straight games on Tron where my scores are like 5 million or less, and I'm cursing away like mad. I basically threaten the machine that if it doesn't smarten up it's going out to the curb tomorrow.

But then on that 18th game I end up 1 shot away from Portal, I've hit that Gem shot 10 times and my score is 150 million, and Tron is once again my favourite machine in the whole wide world! BFF!

I am going to have to completely agree with you... it's funny because I told my wife tonight that since we are NOW learning how to play the game, that AC/DC is like our 'go to' fun-time' game... like playing Slot's at a Casino, you might win, you might lose, but you know you had fun.

And Tron is like playing CRAPS....... you come to the table with a lot more at stake. BUT when it goes your way it is one HELL OF A RIDE !!!...

Going to go get me some Quorra right now!

For the last 19 months, Tron is the game I've played the most. There have been month long stretches where it's been the only game I've played! I love those rare instances when I can stack light cycle, zuse and gem on quorra--it's just nuts!

You're not exactly a Stern collector too, that Tron LE was pretty lonely except for that Star Trek LE back in that area.

#67 10 years ago

I will next learn how to STACK multi-balls and learn that special technique that only the best know how to do, the technique of holding a ball on one flipper while playing the game with the other ball (or 2, or 3).....

I know, I am asking to learn how to become a pro while not qualifying for the amateur tour, but it is fun to learn, it is what I do best........

i think i need to find a pinball club so somebody can explain why this game is so great. Owned it. Sold it. Don't miss it. Would luv an explanation why this is a Top 5 game? thxs

I'm not sure I'd argue it's a top 5 game, however when it's modded nicely, it's a beautiful game with a unique, very challenging rule set. I also think it's an acquired taste…I initially hated it, but after spending more time with it have grown to love it. The combos, stacking, and tight shots are really addictive (and very, very hard for most mere mortals to master). I must have played 20 games today…only 4 were satisfying. Definitely not the right pin for someone who doesn't like getting their chops busted

IMO when I play it, even if it's a bad ball or a bad game it's still fun, the theme, callouts, music and satisfying shots make it great.

Not everyone has to like it, but I think it's very well respected and will be for years to come. I replaced TOTAN with Tron and couldn't be happier. I can't understand why TOTAN is so highly rated but that's just my view. Everyone likes different things.

You forgot about the BSM in the lobby! Nonetheless, you're right, I'm a little light on new Sterns. Robert's the king of minty fresh LE's!

Pfft, I wasn't counting that, all the way on the other side, it wasn't keeping Tron any kind of company.

TOTAN is highly rated for artwork and it's unique theme (and integration). Here's a link to an insanely great restoration I picked up recently…

http://s437400854.onlinehome.us/?page_id=120.

As a game it's fun, but not going to give you the rush you get from many other games (like TRON). Great addition to a medium/large collection.

#75 10 years ago

Well, My wife's brother flew in from California... and while here of course we had to play a pinball tournament.

I swear he must have this game at home although he just say's he used to play a lot as a kid.

I tried my new skills but just couldn't pull it off. Not embarrassed... (Yes, I am).... but I didn't show it.

Will continue to practice. Was still a lot of fun.

#76 10 years ago

OK.... so now it's a week later......

I can't seem to learn how to hit Quorra with any precision. I've put the 'engineering' hat on and calculated the trajectory based on the velocity of the ball falling into position on the flipper and aimed in a direction that the playfield artwork gives me for targeting.... and I simply cannot hit it with any dependable accuracy.

I can hit the left ramp regularly, hit the spinning disc anytime I want, hit the right ramp better than before, but Quorra is my goal and I am puzzled why I can't hit this like others can.

Just a head trip I suppose. She's cute, but I like Blonde, blue eyes, slightly thin, ready to make small talk and laugh about life, and , and. and......... Yes, it's just a head trip. I suppose I need to concentrate on NOT concentrating.

In the meantime, I am going to take off the glass, 'finger' that spinner 4 times, put a 'sock' in the middle to keep the ball from going down the middle, and see if I can't just hit it ONCE after changing the the game to allow '10' balls per game, just so I can hear her yell out 'I AM QUORRA'!......

If that don't work, I'm going to ask my wife to just call it out tonight.... 'role playing' you know. Nothing I've ever done before, but man, I need this now!

#77 10 years ago

Quorra is a tough shot, some games she's easy, most shes not. Thats the beauty of the shot though. If it was to easy, it would ruin the challenge...

Tron is fun because its a fairly hard game....

As the saying goes: Play better

Practice...

#78 10 years ago

Best Stern machines in my opinion…

#79 10 years ago

Quorra doesn't stress me out, it's the freaking Gem shot that I just wait for luck on.

#80 10 years ago

So,

As I continue to learn and grow..... I am learning, kinda what I learned when we first started to enjoy this hobby. And that is ,,, you have to 'Feel' it.... you have to 'Hit' the shot, go with the flow, don't think about it,,, and silly as it sounds become ONE with the game.

I know this sounds stupid. I am a calculated person, figure it out, make it happen, send the ball in the direction that is calculated based on all of the physics of the surroundings.

BUT, one of the first things I learned when we started this hobby was just to 'go with the flow' and enjoy what the game is 'offering' at the time. And I say this, because I initially thought, hey, it's just a button, that is connected to a solenoid, that is connected mechanically to a 'flipper' that will send a round object towards a target that you have pre-determined to 'hit'!........ and so without any emotion, I attempted all of this and could not accomplish SH*T.!

And so, I learned that if I swung my torso in the direction that I was aiming for, yelled out certain obscenities when I was unsuccessful, and kicked my feet in certain directions............ YES, I could accomplish things that I could not before..... WOW!!!!!!!!!

And so it was. Emotion!......... Sweet Emotion!, This was definitely involved in this pinball hobby. And the only way I could succeed at any game that we own. (wow, we only own three, but very happy to resolve my evening to this luxury.)

So tonight, I could hit Quorra with success..... by just 'feeling' it.......... hit her 5 times........ but didn't get to the arcade to finish her off. But still felt pretty good about it.

Anyways, thanks for listening. Having some fun right now, and getting ready to relax some more, playing pinball.

Maybe I'm just being 'Emotional', ............ Thanks. (remember I'm only 1 year into the hobby so please be kind.)

#81 10 years ago

Whhoooh... hooo!,,,

Hit Quorra 5 times, and the arcade on the second ball..... WOW,,, this is damn fun!,,, hit this, hit that, just had too much fun........

Yeah!,,,, needed this much. Got 40 million!..... fantastic, for a guy gets excited over 5 million normally.

Anyways, a good night!

Congrats! Now we're talking....

Hey, LOTR_breath,

I like your name. Where do I get one of these?... Not the 'breath'.... but the LOTR part. Sounds like fun to me. Where can I find one of these?

I would love to have the same discipline of learning how to beat, or accomplish certain shots in a LOTR game.

#84 10 years ago

They do come up for sale from time to time.

http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/lotr-for-sale-1

Keep an eye on this page for something local.

Also never hurts to check craiglist or even Ebay but only if you inspect and pick-up yourself.

OK... I'm feeling lazy tonight....... I can now hit 'Quorra' once in a while....... and I've read your post previously so I have tried to pay attention to the 'Gem' shot.... BUT, can't seem to find it.. for a bit I thought it was the right spinner, but looking closer, it doesn't look like 'Gem',,, it looks like a dude.

The Gem shot is that funny little sharp loop on the right, above the right ramp you hit for the skill shot with the upper flipper, to the right of the recognizer. It's not really clearly marked.

WOW, I was thinkin that.... but didn't see any clear markings.... and then, how on earth do I ever 'purposely' hit that shot......

It's like tonight, I was 'purposely' shooting for 'Quorra' and didn't do so well. But then got Disc Multi-ball which of course I will hit the arcade and some other items without even trying......... BUT, I don't think I ever, or rarely ever hit that little loop, even by mistake!... Hmmmmmm....

#88 10 years ago

Here is a "Gem" of a skill shot! Try plunging just hard enough that the ball gently rolls off the end of the shooter lane and triggers the Gem switch. I can do it about 10-20% of the time. Gem shot is also your bonus multiplier!

EXCELLENT!... Yes, I am going to try that right now!......... So far my only 'Skill' shot was to pull the plunger light enough to avoid the arcade...... 'cause it's easy enough to 'accidentally' hit it more anytime.

Thanks!

OK... 20 minutes later: I will have to call this a 'SUPER SKILL SHOT'... because it's obviously something I am not going to achieve.... (crap.. hate to admit faults.. but I know my limits.)... NOW, On the other hand, learning how to 'Trap' is something I am learning.... I'm not good at it.... but can enjoy it. And in time become good at it.

Now for that 'SUPER SKILL SHOT!'''.... I won't give up, but ,,,,,, I'm not that good either.

It is extremely difficult to do. After playing several games yesterday, I now have to say I'm getting it about 5-10% of the time. Cool thing is, if you hit no switches or a small number of switches, you can let it drain and try it again!

I have trouble completing the CLU and Lightcycle modes. I find it almost impossible to get the ball past the right orbit past the bumpers consistently without the bumpers blocking it to complete these modes.
Since I'm not the best pinball player and like to play Tron, I've actually changed my game to 5 balls so I have a chance at completing more of the modes... I'm not competing so at least I get a chance to see how these modes are completed somewhat more often.

Interesting. You actually don't need to make that shot to complete either one of those modes. Let me explain: In CLU, completing the C_L_U lanes will spot the left-most clu shot that you have not made yet. So pick off the left orbit, then Quorra, then start making left ramps to complete the C_L_U letters. That will complete the pop orbit shot. It is extremely helpful to start the CLU mode with at least 1 or 2 Clu lanes already lit. For Light Cycle to complete, you need a super jackpot(think 3-way combo). The best way to do that is shoot left ramp, then Quorra, then right ramp to complete.

I bought my tron just a week ago...

What a cool machine! Especially the "awful" Gem shot makes the difference. The multiballs are fun... I like add-a-balls and restarts Even more - I like "special" super jackpots!

I got to the portal with my 3rd ball even though ball 1 and ball 2 were not very good... that's also a thing I like about tron. With one ball, you can do quite a bit of progression.

http://www.flippervideos.de/videos/mp4/tron_portal.mp4

This post also helped my a lot...

To be honest, I had no clue what to best during Tron Portal MB, so it was a really poor perfomance.

Here this guy did it much better:

Quoted from retired_user_101:

have you put on Super Rubbers yet for all 3 flippers?

NOPE...

Am placing the order tonight. ... Oh WOW, there are so many colors to choose from. Maybe I should turn this over to my wife.... she will pick the right colors, and discuss all of the possibilities with me, contrasts, brightness, etc.

Should have them sometime soon after the Hobbit starts shipping.

#96 10 years ago

Quoted from retired_user_101:

big gameplay difference. totally gets you in more control. Quorra shots are much easier.
ps. prepare for extremely sore fingers after putting them on. they're a bit on the tight side.

Order placed. Stuck with the same colors as original. Didn't get the wife involved and blew all of this money on these items to improve game performance and color perception for guests as they enter our home. Actually matches the curtains! (i think, not really sure).......

I did get a set for the Tron as well as the AC/DC.... so we shall see.

Really appreciate the advice.

Whoo.... Hoooo.....!

Got SuperBands in today. Just finished putting them on Tron, will do AC/DC here in a minute. Haven't played a game yet, so we shall see if I can hit 'Quorra' regularly on every ball at least 'Five' times.......

This is what I am expecting for my $6 bucks. I hope that I'm not disappointed. Will check back soon....

Oh, on a side note: I have to say that pinballife so far has really been a great place to do business with. Just ordered them a few days ago.

One trick to completing CLU that I've tried to use that does not work is this:
When I hit the scoop to start CLU mode, I hold the right flipper in the up position which I would say 75% of the time bounces the ball right back in to the scoop. However, this never spots the scoop CLU. The light stays on. Why is that? I would think once the ball is ejected from the scoop, a hit right back into the scoop would complete the CLU scoop shot.
Any insights?
