I'm not a good player but that doesn't stop me from playing competitively and enjoying it. I go in with low expectations and focus on small things I know I can improve on. The big thing I'm trying to work on now is relaxing while playing under pressure. I find that when I'm playing a game that matters, I tend to forget skills like drop catches and dead flips and instead flip away like a mad man.
Really the only discouraging thing I've found about competitive play is the odd guy who takes it way too seriously and throws sportsmanship and any decency out the window. However that's an edge case and 99% of players I've met are very cool and can have fun while competing.
