Chili cheese Fritos!!??? That is the peak of food evolution right there.

I'll take those in lieu of pay.

#252 5 years ago
Quoted from fosaisu:

If you’re ok with social security and Medicare you’re already a socialist. Sorry, your great-grandparents sold you out to FDR.

I had no choice with having Social Security taxes withheld from my first job I got at 16 so, yes, I'm for it so I can get my draw on it.

To be fair, the re-release of Taco flavored Doritos a few years back was a super letdown as they were nowhere close to being the same as they were.

#254 5 years ago

Fritos suck, I will not be collecting social security, and it’s ridiculous to brag about socialist medical when iif you want prompt care you pay out of pocket.

Sadly, unless Rand Paul's been lurking here (and I pray that he has), everyone reading this thread is probably at least a bit socialist.

Quoted from I_P_D_B:

I had sudden terrific abdominal pain, went to ER, went directly to CT scan within the hour, this is in the USA. I've heard that Canada has long waiting times, like you say, and people don't mention about that when they compare the USA system to the Canadian system. Yeah, it was kidney stones and they did not know that for sure until the CT scan. I don't want the waiting times that you experienced in Canada. Kidney stones are too painful to delay treatment. If immediate treatment means a copay, versus free socialized medicine but with a long delay, it was worth it to treat the excruciating pain asap.

Where does this myth about wait times come from. If you critically need something you get it in minutes. There is no wait time in Canada for critical care. They always report wait time as averages, if you retired and have knee pain you can expect to wait a few months for an MRI. You can always pay for it yourself or if you don't need to take time of work you can go on the cancelation wait list. The cancelation wait list significantly moves you up the list for non critical issues. Everyone on the wait list is rated, children usually go first, what you do for a living impacts the list as well. I blew my knee and have a desk job and they told me right away your going to wait. If you have a physical job you get in quickly. I have had both appendicitis and kidney stones and of course when you go to the ER in pain the only wait is based on medical triage. You get everything you need as fast as possible.

I don't know how this topic strayed into health care when it was simply about me thinking about retiring.

I heal fast! And stay away from doctors unless it is a dire emergency. Otherwise they will try to find something wrong even if there isn't.

And the government health plan that was forced on me should only get cheaper as my income declines.

#266 5 years ago

And I'm certainly not even considering moving to Canada where the healthy will pay even more so the ill can get taken care of.

Quoted from o-din:

I don't know how this topic strayed into health care when it was simply about me thinking about retiring.

I semi retired when i was 51 years old and it is the best thing I ever did. Since I semi retired I have been in 48 of the 50 states, enjoyed traveling 60 to 80 days a year and working on my two kids houses and our pinball stuff when not helping the kids or traveling. Smartest move I have made in life!

No huge savings account - I just live cheap & travel cheaper. We don't do without we just do things smarter and save money that way. Just got home yesterday from a 9 day trip that cost me less then $900. Most of the expense was the motel ($585 for 8 nights) and about $300 for everything else. Went to a County Fair about 300 miles west of us and in 8 days we saw a great concert, mud bogs, motocross racing, demo derby, school bus demo derby, a couple other musical groups (lesser known bands), an extreme illusion show, and lots more. Normally we would have taken the camper and saved about $300 more money but I did not feel like having to winterize it again this Fall and since we have no other plans on using it this year I figured just stay in the motel this time around.

Now I am home for a couple weeks and selling some pinball parts on eBay while working on a few pinball machines. Then off to NJ in about 10 days for two weeks to help my son with some around the house projects.

I try to keep a 50/50 balance between working to make a few bucks and other stuff. When I work it is typically 7 days a week so I can have more time off to travel & help the kids but I like what I do so all is great. Coming up on 14 years of being semi retired and I only wish I did it sooner! Next year will be even better because by then both my wife & I will be collecting Social Security. She is about 18 months younger than me so she has to wait a little while longer to get to 62 but now that she is their we decided to just wait another year before she starts collecting because we are doing OK with what I make & collect with my SS. She 'semi retired" the same time I did so she was actually only 49 when she stopped working.

It might not be for everyone but I love the freedom and love to help my two kids save a ton of money on house projects we can do better than most contractors they could hire. So far I figure I have saved them over $100,000 with the renovations we have done on two houses & yards. Plus the time spent working with them has been great for everyone. One inspector has actually brought other inspectors over to see our work to show them how a deck should be built. It is always nice to have someone recognize quality work but it is even nicer to have the inspectors impressed.

What part of Jersey?

#269 5 years ago
Quoted from spfxted:What part of Jersey?

He is up in the Edison / Piscataway area about 200 miles from me here in Central PA. Next project is to move several ton of dirt to finish draining a wet area near their new garden then time to build a shed for him.

#270 5 years ago

Yeah, there's got to be something better to do than sitting in this air conditioned office with the internet at my fingertips for hours on end. There's only so much to research.

It used to be a good place to get some rest after a night of heavy drinking, but I blew that by not getting here on time a couple weeks ago.

#271 5 years ago

Take a 30 day vacation and see how you feel at the end. Your liver may need you to go back for those 3 days a week.

#272 5 years ago

Looks like with Labor day approaching, that will give me a five day weekend with a two day week to follow.

Nothing like five straight days of drunken stuporness to get me refreshed for at least while.

I'm looking at 6 days off. Taking the Thursday before and the Tuesday after. Looking forward to it. Not sure what I have planned, but it will be nice just to have some time off.

My motto is:

You can spend all your time making money,
You can spend all your love making time.

Hope this helps.

The government does a great job taking care of the wealthy and well connected.

I don't hear the Canadians bitching about their health care. At the very least they dont have to fear bankruptcy from a catastrophic injury. The bottom line is, not everything should be for profit. Health care and the prison system top that list. That's ok, we'll just stick with this ridiculous unaffordable system we have now.

Are you being facetious? That's exactly how and why all insurance works. Of course the healthy or the people who didn't wreck their car or burn down their house are covering those that did suffer an unfortunate incident.

Also, the interest on certificates of Deposit as well as gains on investments the insurance COmpaNies make.

Yes, that's understood, but it's not the basic idea behind how insurance works.

Anyway I guess I de-railed Odin's thread enough. Good luck with whatever you ultimately decide on your retirement .

Just go with your gut instinct

Not at all. It wasn't that long ago getting insurance or not was a personal preference in the USA, if of course you could afford it, and believe me I'm not overjoyed they have made it mandatory or pay a tax penalty if you choose not to, but they have made it affordable enough for me so I know I'm not paying for somebody elses care.

#287 5 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

Semi retired when I turned 60 and supplement by doing home and business remodels. I don't actively look for work to do but, I stay busy as I want to be.

Semi retirement sounds good. How does that work? You just work less hours at your job and do other things to make money?

It's too bad we can't repeatedly come out of retirement like the pro athletes do.

I decided to put off retiring at least until the end of the week.

But my foot kinda hurts the last couple days from working in the garage on that machine this last weekend in my sandals. Strained the arch or something and it's been a little painful to get around.

Now that's never happened before after all the games I've worked on so maybe I was standing wrong or maybe it is a sign to keep my day job where I can sit and put my feet up on the desk when no customers are present.

Usually it means leaving your day job, collecting an earned defined benefit pension and maybe doing some part-time work to make some extra scratch. Examples are:

Golf course starter
Wal-Mart greeter.
Costco membership card verifier or receipt marker swiper
Pinball repair person
Indian casino parking shuttle bus
Home Depot electrical dept. worker.

That would be my buddy Bob who works at a local driving range. His job is to give tokens for cash so people can get their bucket of balls. However, he says that doesn't stop him from having to deal with assholes day after day.

Do you just get paid Flat Rate? When I worked for a Ford dealership if there was no work I didn't make nothing. Most of the time I could beat the flat rate book so I did pretty well.

any chance you could convince the boss to let you bring in customer pinball machines to work on during slow times? May be the best of both worlds?

You could keep occupied doing something you enjoy when car stuff is slow.

Yeah, I quit that commission thing a long time ago. At one time it was worth it until management found away to chisel away at it so anything they wanted to give away always came out of the mechanics pay. It got frustrating and always caused a problem.

So straight hourly now.

He was fine with it and that was the plan until the shop became a storage unit for one of his relative's junk. Now there's no room. So now it's just pinside and me. There are a couple other stores here including a liquor store next door, so we shoot the shit or watch the ballgame when nothing else is happening. I tell ya, I got it rough!

#298 5 years ago

tell the boss to get enough shit out for 1 pinball machine.

If he values you then that is 1 very small perk given your knowledge, experience, and yelp review history.

I told him I'd be willing to throw it all in the dumpster which is located conveniently right out the back door.
