I'm a K-5 STEM teacher in Eagan, MN, and I wanted to teach my students engineering design through hands-on activities. I combined my love for Pinball with teaching, and this is our first year trying out a Pinball Arcade day ran by the 4th and 5th graders.

5th Graders are creating their own Pinball Machine made from cardboard, Maker Space supplies, and our 3D printer. 4th graders are making their own arcade machine (similar to "Caine's Arcade"). So far, we're just in the beginning phase of planning, designing, and testing. Students are coming up with a theme for their game, painting it in Art, while they build the playfield and flippers in my STEM class. Some of the themes I've seen so far are Minecraft, Mario, Basketball, Nature themes, PacMan, and football. It's been a blast so far, and they seem to really enjoy it. I prepped them for what a Pinball Machine is and does by bringing in an old Doodle Bug to school, fixing it, and letting them all play it as an activity station. Many are hooked! Only a hand full of kids actually have ever played a pin before. A lot of them didn't know how to use the plunger or the flippers.

I'll update here as this project continues to document their journey. They have until about mid-April to finish and show them off for our school-wide Arcade Day where Pre-k through 3rd grade will come to play 4th and 5th grader's games.

If there is anyone out there that works for a pinball manufacturing company (Stern, American Pinball, Spooky, Jersey Jack ), and wants to create a short video with words of encouragement or playfield creation tips for my your engineers, please send those my way!

It's thinking like this and teachers like you that inspire kids to learn by making it hands on and fun.

Kudos to you, that's a lucky group of kids right there.

Awesome project, makes me want to move my son to your school district.

Wow, that last on looks a lot like Multimorphic’s flipper design. That kid is going places!!!

if you think about it a pin is the perfect catalyst for a modern Shop, STEM or CTE class. you've got mechanical and electrical engineering and fabrication, programming, design and multimedia all in one package. i've long had an idea for a semester-long curriculum whereby students fix up a beater pin and then donate it to the school

    great job!

...even covers STEAM when you factor in the art.

Thanks everyone! I'll be sure to share pictures as we continue our designing. I'll also be sure to share your posts on here as inspiration for them!

    Very cool project!!
Those kids are lucky. Way to go teacher!!!

    #10 2 years ago

You'll be "that teacher" that they all remember! Bravo to you. Sometimes it only takes that one teacher to keep a kid from giving up, even in their later school years.

The one with the red monster at the top, and aluminum foil tape is the my “teacher example” pin for the students to see.

Where were you when I was in school. All I made was a birdhouse in shop class. Oh yeah….that’s when elementary schools had shop class. I also took home economics. I’m old but not that old.lol

Your students are fortunate to have you as an instructor.

    #14 2 years ago

Pretty cool. I admire your enthusiasm and drive!
My sons old elementary school will have his spring festival soon. Ironically it's a carnival theme so we will be bringing a Hurricane pinball for the festival.

Our Arcade Day was a success!

I learned a lot as a STEM teacher, and can’t wait for next year to do this again! Maybe I can partner with PinBox3000.

Absolutely fantastic idea. It looks like the kids really took to it and had a great time.

... so 30 years from now when these kids are buying their own pinball machines and driving up the prices, we know who to blame

    #20 1 year ago

wow just great , maybe for the next one , someone close by can bring out a few full size pinball machines and arcades , so the kids can see and play the real thing

    #21 1 year ago

Seems like bringing in a real machine and showing them how most everything is controlled by simple switches and solenoids/magnets/motors, would be beneficial. You may have some future electrical engineers there.

    #22 1 year ago

find your local pinball club and ask the members to help with games , this is just great PR for any club , and you can hook future members !

I thought I’d add an update here… I’m making an acrylic EM cab for my classroom. It is almost done. I’m hoping to get it in my STEM classroom by Tuesday next week.

Students will use it to play, learn about basic circuitry, model how to build their own pinball machine, and other fun activities.

We’ll continue to have Arcade and Pinball nights where students get to build their own pinball machine or arcade game out of cardboard and maker space supplies. This will start around January.

Sounds like a lot of fun. The next wave of pinball game designers will be born from your class I'm sure.

    #25 1 year ago

I took it to my school, and here are my students’ reactions

    #26 1 year ago

So cool to see kids so stoked on it! This whole thread is heart warming - and you'll need all the warmth you can get with that Minnesota winter around the corner...

Students finally get a chance to play the machine!
