    Quoted from AJB4:

Ok 6 months away from my 30 day hiatus. Not sure if I will be able to do it. I have been really tearing it up recently posting a lot and obsessing over my lineup... I only bring it up now since she just reminded me about the 30 day hiatus come January 1, 2017.

Is it 30 days off pinside - or 30 days off pinside AND pinball.

    #52 7 years ago
    Quoted from KenPin:

Starting a new post on Pinside forum is definite proof to your wife that you are NOT addicted to Pinside. You're just checking responses, right?

    Quoted from fattrain:

So wait, You're posting to pinside about it?
That's like saying let me do some heroin to show you I'm not addicted to heroin
Oh, and the start date of 2017 is hilarious.
"Honey, I'll totally quit smoking for 30 days, in just over a year from now"

    Quoted from Mudflaps:

Before you leave, don't forget to start a goodbye thread. Those always go well.

Pinside Gold here! This has all the makings of a best of Pinside candidate.

    Quoted from scylla:

Good queation, never specifically spelled out but I believe the implication was a complete cessation of all pinball or pinball related activities such as Pinside.

    #54 7 years ago

What new hobby are you going to take up during the month of Jan 2017?

I'm confident you won't let her boss you around for a whole month.

    #55 7 years ago

New hobby: eating fried chicken while drinking beer and watching porn. Then pinball will be welcomed back and perhaps even embraced as she will soon realize it could ALWAYS be worse...
Hahahaha - just kidding will probably take up boating or r/c airplanes -something where I can throw money into a hole with no hope of seeing it again so at least it feels similar to pinball.

    #56 7 years ago
    Quoted from AJB4:

Another room to put Pins in... Hahahaha

so one room for every 30 days you stay off Pinside.....sounds like 4 months and you'd be able to buy a lot of new games!

    #57 7 years ago

My wife loves my obsession with Pinball. It keeps me at home and out of trouble. She couldn't be happier

    #58 7 years ago

See I really think that we will get there - as soon as she understands that of the many forms a midlife crisis can take becoming a pinhead who hangs in the basement surrounded by his beloved pins is not the worst thing that could happen...

    #59 7 years ago

January 1, 2017: start reading auto trader religiously. Copies in the bathroom, car, couch, bedroom. Buy a couple beaters to sit in the driveway. You'll work on them in the spring you tell her. Start growing out a mullet and chops. She won't last a week before begging you back onto pinside.

    #60 7 years ago

    to say plainly......you're fuc*ed LOL

    #61 7 years ago

Could be worse I suppose. My wife (who is a very good pinball player) got laid off 30 days ago.So I've been working OT to cover. We just got a NIB TWD premium last week. The problem for me is she has all day to play and has set the high score in every damn thing Someday I will reassert my pinball dominance.

    #62 7 years ago

You could always start hunting these.

    AJB,

Is your plan to keep feeding your pinball addiction through late Oct, then start cutting back in Nov, and even more in Dec, so that Jan won't be so bad? -Or-
are you gonna live dangerously and stay full throttle with pinball & Pinside til Dec 31st?

    #64 7 years ago

Full throttle wide open baby!!! I anticipate that the withdrawal will be bad with the shakes and sweats, etc but hopefully won't kill me.

    #65 7 years ago
    Quoted from KyleCat:

I'm no marriage councilor but they never forget and neither will you. Find a hobby for her so she doesn't get jealous of others hobby's.

LOL yeah they have a very weird way of suddenly bring up stuff that you said or promised 15 years ago

    #66 7 years ago

So what are you going to have her quit doing for a month?

    #67 7 years ago
    Quoted from AJB4:

That raises a technical point - it was to be for 30 days starting Jan 1 but Jan has 31 days in the month.

You'll have to delay it until April then.

    #68 7 years ago
    Quoted from TOK:

So what are you going to have her quit doing for a month?

AJB4's wife has graciously agreed to give up sex for the same period, maybe indefinitely. Hope she isn't the one with an iron will. Good luck

    #69 7 years ago

I just refer to it as, "I'm a voracious reader". Sounds better.

    #70 7 years ago

Just tuck it and admit you are addicted. Done. You are, aren't you?

    #71 7 years ago
    Quoted from TOK:

Yes, has this been discussed? And ...?

    Quoted from wizard_mode:

Well of course I am, but not sure what admitting it would prove or accomplish. I have pinside up at work, check it on my phone when I am not at my desk, etc. Sometimes check things if I wake up at 2am...

    Quoted from Pinball-is-great:

She gets to give up nagging me for a month. (and I am the final arbiter of what is & what is not nagging...)

We all do this. Totally normal.....

    #75 7 years ago

Maybe join new cell plan and get 4 phones. One for you and one for the wife. Hide #3 upstairs and #4 downstairs. Be sure to turn ringer off phones 3 & 4. Might make the month bearable.

I'm throwing my support toward AJB in Jan 2017.

I think he will make it through the month and not even have to sneak quick looks on Pinside.
Biggest concern is him o-d-ing on pinball & Pinside in early Feb after his 31 days are over with.

    Quoted from mcluvin:

    me too!

    #78 7 years ago

So are you planning to sincerely try to stay off for a whole month? Or are you looking for ways to sneak on without being caught, like some of the "work safe" browser modes that strip websites of the identifying graphics? Trying to figure out what type of support is appropriate, lol!

    #79 7 years ago

I am really gonna do it - I really can't lie to her she always knows - I would make a lousy actor...

    #80 7 years ago

I did negotiate 1 game of pinball per day into the deal. It may have to be a 10 ball game with unlimited extra ball but hey whatever. If I cared to cure myself of pinball then it is no pinside and Ironman set to papa level difficulty 3 ball game no extras. But I don't mind being a pinhead.

    #81 7 years ago

Bring your wife to the Cleveland Pinball and Arcade Show in September. Only 2 hours away from Dublin. Let her meet a lot of the great people involved in the hobby and maybe she won't be as annoyed with your addiction.

When I got into the hobby a couple of years ago and joined the local league, I can't tell you how many awesome people I've met. People from all walks of life and you still get a family feel.

    #82 7 years ago

    NO ONE LIKES A QUITTER!!!

I'd also remind her you could be spending your time doing a lot worse. Hookers, Blow, Strip Clubs, Drinking all the time (not that that's a bad thing). It's something you enjoy. If you have to curb pinside for 30 days then she should have to do that same with Facebook and/or Pintrest! I find it hard to believe any wife/significant other should disparage a hobby. And now she's limiting games? Time for a new wife.

HAHAHA, within like 30 minutes of me changing my location 6 pinsiders emailed me and said WTF???
Went to Vegas in June, liked it so much, we went back 2 weeks later and bought a house. Move in in 2 weeks. So when you're in town, look a brother up Boob.

Day 1 of your 30 day abstinence buy a couple magazines for hobbies she

And if the car magazines don't work, maybe guns or survivalist magazines. Hell go to the bookstore and pick the craziest couple hobbies you can find. You can actually have a lot of fun with this.

    Depends on what's going on.
January could be a dead month or Stern puts out new game,JJP announces title and price of non licensed game.
Show dates posted. I don't know,if I was gonna try and kick I think I would go for Nov. Dec..The holidays will keep you distracted and then you can binge in January

You might miss some holiday sales though. That's about the only time we see them.

    Really?

We talking games or parts? Can't recall ANY holiday specials in the pin game.

    #89 7 years ago

Well I hate to say it, but I'd side with your wife. Pushing it out to January says a lot. I was a WOW player for a while and put off quitting that game for nearly a year at its worst.

I'm not suggesting giving up pinball, but a break might give you some insight to what you might be missing, if that's the case. Alternatively it might show no difference at all, but if your thinking only about pinball, and your wife's noticing, maybe some time off will help shape it into something healthy.

That said, there's always the Adam and Eve catalog. You can take up hardcore bondage and convert that basement into a dungeon, or just buy your wife something to distract her from your time on pinside or the gameroom.

Definitely parts. Those are few and far between for that matter.

This thread reads like a joke, no offense intended.

If you are truly out to prove to your wife you are not addicted (even though it sounds like you are) go cold turkey now - tomorrow. It's summer, go enjoy yourself outside doing things with the family. Waiting until January (and your wife agreeing to the bet in January) sounds so unbelievable. My wife would end the bet right now and claim victory since you have to wait months before starting. Done and done. You know what, she'd be right if I wasn't able to start bet right now.

So my friend, either climb into those big boy pants and take your wife's bet on now or accept defeat. Talking about a bet months in advance sounds like a Kenada thread. Create reaction for the sake of reaction.

Start collecting video games instead in January

Wisdom there. As of midnight tonight pinside will have 1 less daily visitor. I am off pinside entirely till Sep1. No sneaking peeks - absolutely no cheating.

6 weeks away. Nothing big will likely happen in that time anyways. So tonight as of midnight I'm out.

    Ok so I gotta:
    1. Clear my web browser of favorites, hx and all cookies so I am not temped to click on it.
    2. Take the mobile app off of my phone.
    3. Find something to look at other than the depressing news... Love the video game idea.

4 hrs and 24 mins till going dark, then it is T-minus 45 days and counting

By the way...you know as soon as you've supposedly "gone dark," (which means you've logged out with this account and created another one to lurk), I'm just going to start talking shit about you so that you can't stand it and have to come back.

    This should be fun.

    #100 7 years ago

Stayed off 30 days recently and frankly didn't miss the real intense fighting and certain things that I find annoying. Did miss a little keeping up with a few updates. But was pretty easy to catch up when I got back on.
