So I've had some movement in my collection the last week or so and landed a TZ today. Friend of mine hooked me up with one in South Philly. Spoke to the guy yesterday. In storage for years in a basement. 5 or 6 steps up.

Met the seller on site today. Neat story...one owner, bought for an exclusive Italian-American "social" club in South Philly. On site for years, but moved into the basement of an adjacent church years back during a remodel and just wanted it gone.

So...get there and, yeah, not 5 steps. At least 20 steps, steep and narrow. And just me and my daughter. Ouch.
Looked at the game. Filthy filthy as expected. Not working also as expected. Leaky batteries as expected. I was OK with the price until I reached down to flip the power switch. Didn't feel right. Looked underneath. Must have been placed under a leaky ceiling. Entire bottom was sagging and had dried mold. Front of the machine was separating. Legs were barely attached. I said I wouldn't take it without a much lower offer and actually walked away.

Guy actually chased me down the street and wanted to make a deal...worked out a very very good price and home it came. Not going to repair the cabinet. Just going to replace it.

The find!

Got it home. Wife is sick so I didn't want to ask for help and since it's going to go to a new cabinet anyway, figured I might as well take it apart and bring it inside in pieces. Here's some pictures of the "as found" machine.

Quoted from fitzpatricksrus:

Never seen a flasher melt its cover like that before (by gumball machine), but I bet the play field will clean up nicely. Looks like an original clock too. Congrats and best of luck with your project!

I've seen that happen a bunch of times. Could be a bunch of reasons, but my guess is a fried transistor locked it on and it just got toasty and the plastic got melty!

Quoted from bballfan:

Congrats on your project!
I was looking at ebay and came across this cab to restore that may be near you.
ebay.com link

Yep, that's my new cabinet

This one was totally original, never shopped or even touched in its life. Just really nice to find.

Can't wait to get it up on the rotisserie and see what's what with it...but wasn't gonna happen yesterday. I think I hurt myself in at least one place moving that thing!

#15 10 years ago
Quoted from yfz450:

I have a nice AFM bottom cabinet that I was going to use for My MB that you can have for what I paid for it. Let me know if you want it. PM me if you do.

Thanks, but TZ is a widebody, so that would be a bit more of a project than I'm after...either widening the AFM cab or narrowing the TZ playfield

#17 10 years ago

This is going to be a fun game...I'm actually looking forward to playing it as much as getting it back into shape!

#21 10 years ago
Quoted from spfxted:

You know I could have helped.....

The hurt was moving it up the 20 steps by myself...the taking it apart in the driveway..well, not the first time I did it. Still doesn't mean I enjoyed it, but it had to be done!

#23 10 years ago

Agreed. And today I'm realizing I definitely pulled something.

#27 10 years ago

OK folks...I'm going to make this my mini-restore thread. I don't want to call this a full restoration. People get touchy about what qualifies as a restore. I'm not out to make this a full-blown restore. I'm swapping in a better cabinet than I have, total topside tear down, and general bottom of playfield cleanup.
Not a full playfield swap. Not going to pull the wiring off of this or any of that (at this point).

I'm going to make this a nice clean above-average player.

#28 10 years ago

This is truly a one-owner, never shopped pin. Today I wanted to get the playfield on the rotisserie. Pulled the apron off and it's nice and clean. Looks like the cards were never ever touched!

2014-02-05 16.22.27.jpg2014-02-05 16.22.27.jpg 2014-02-05 16.22.19.jpg2014-02-05 16.22.19.jpg
#31 10 years ago

Here's some "before" shots.
I find the creative use of rubber bands amusing. Slingshot rubber must have let go, so they wrapped two rubber bands around it. Back side of the playfield...rubber band. Mini flipper had the rubber split and just left to crumble.

2014-02-05 16.28.42.jpg2014-02-05 16.28.42.jpg 2014-02-05 16.28.56.jpg2014-02-05 16.28.56.jpg 2014-02-05 16.29.08.jpg2014-02-05 16.29.08.jpg 2014-02-05 16.29.20.jpg2014-02-05 16.29.20.jpg
#33 10 years ago

The pictures can't capture the cobwebs I found on the playfield by the way!

#34 10 years ago

Once I got it up on the rotisserie I was determined to see what the playfield looked like. I mean, 20 years without a shop job...I was hoping it would clean up nicely. I figured it would, but never know.

As you can see with some time, Novus, and elbow grease, I successfully made a clean spot!

Quoted from LitzDoc:

Hey Geck0
Where do you get the cabinet and about how much does it cost. Thanks

Local fella had one hanging around. He swapped it for one that he redid with new decals, etc. So it's cleaner than mine, and I picked it up for a few hundred.

#39 10 years ago

OK folks...you're all wanting to see nasty cabinet pictures...

The artwork on the cabinet is gorgeous, but the entire front and the front half of the bottom of the cabinet is shot. I'm sure it's repairable, but you know what..for under $500 I have a complete solid cabinet ready to plug and play.

Transformer is rusty, I'm going to replace it. You can see the issues on the service outlet housing. You can see the plywood front is crumbling. You can see how low the bottom is bowing. I can clean up the lockdown bar probably.

#41 10 years ago

Hey Ted...
I don't think these guys came with mylar. None on this one, but the playfields were made well enough that they are super durable and this one will clean up nicely I hope!

#44 10 years ago

i had a few people ask me what shape the scoop is in. Besides dirty, I'm gonna say good shape!

Cleaner! I swear they are smiling more!

But man, that's a lot of elbow grease for a few clean spots! I think this weekend if I get a chunk of time I'm hopefully going to tear it really apart and man, my Treasure Cove kit is going to get a workout!

2014-02-06 19.44.44.jpg2014-02-06 19.44.44.jpg 2014-02-06 19.44.51.jpg2014-02-06 19.44.51.jpg
#48 10 years ago

Yeah, I'm slacking

Actually I think either the wife or kids stole my teardown baggies, so that's part of the reason. Tonight I will get to the store and dig in! Just doing a topside teardown actually doesn't look like it will be too bad on this. The challenge is going to be getting everything working since I'm just poking around and seeing mechs broken or bent or missing.

#50 10 years ago

What...you mean they weren't black plastic?

#53 10 years ago

Good to know, saved me lots of cleaning!

#54 10 years ago

Teardown time finally!

So....is it bad when you take the sling apart and the rubber holds its shape?

Amazing...I think every bulb in this machine is blown!
And I'm not quite sure how they got a rubber band partly stuck on the flipper rubber.

Coming apart...guess its time for me to take the balls out. Kind of feel bad though. It looks like they haven't been out of this machine in a while. Ever. Original balls?

Cleaned up a bit more on the playfield. Is that a hint of a shine there?
Probably not, it's just a lack of dirt that looks shiny by comparison

#63 10 years ago

Agreed. I think back to when I was at the PHOF and seeing all of the newer Sterns with flipper button wear and if I recall, their IM had a wear spot on the playfield.

#64 10 years ago

This morning's haul. It's a solid cabinet and head. Not perfect, but better than what I've got. I may see if a local buddy wants to take a crack at restoring the original one.

I also (thankfully) found a nice clean transformer. I would have hated to buy one and pay to get it shipped. But the one I have now is brown and furry and I'm not comfortable even plugging it in.

#67 10 years ago

Thanks. It's funny, rubber bands were definitely thrown in, but beyond that this pin is as delivered. I bet that almost every rubber on here is original (except the goofy white flipper ones).
Gonna see about getting the temporary cabinet together....

When rubbers fall apart, I guess rubber bands suffice?

#72 10 years ago

Cleaning out the old cabinet. Got me some treasured...

Let's see...AA battery that expired in 2001.
Plunger that's nice and extra furry.
Last but not least a pile of quarters that looks like something from a ship wreck!

#74 10 years ago

I actually think it's all from being under a leaky ceiling. All of the moisture damage was in the front of the machine. Leak right down the glass or something. Nothing touched the playfield or sides of the cabinet oddly enough.

#75 10 years ago

Little bit of work and looks like it's (kind of) alive! The fun part is let's see how many bulbs I need to replace. I checked, there is at least one bulb working on every GI string so that means that the GI is good and, truly, every bulb is blown!

Temporary TZ home.

Yeah it's going to get blown apart at least one or two more times. This was just to get the boards all tested to make sure it boots and cat proof it.

Still got that "forgotten about it for a decade" fresh coat of yumminess on the glass. I guess I will need to be cleaning that....

Yeah yeah ted...

Ran around all day, so I'm pooped for a bit, but going to spend some more time on this shortly...!

As for all of the pictures...these are just my quickie cell phone pics. I have my digital camera that I take hundreds of pictures on for each project. For me its important to keep the photo train rolling. My memory isn't where it really should be so the pictures are the only thing I have to help me put everything back together.

#84 10 years ago

I lucked out. Batteries leaked, but I've never seen it just not touch the board...until now. Pulled out the old one, put in a remote holder, won't have that worry again!

you are really moving along, keep us updated, i will save this thread and use it as a reference

Aww crud...that means I actually should put it back together at some point, huh?

#95 10 years ago
Quoted from flynnibus:

I'm a big fan of videos over pictures... because I tell myself the details and not just rely on the static photos. I have a small camcorder and just record a brief replay of what I did and describe the bits involved as I move through the game. So each segment is only 30secs or a minute typically. But doing that.. along with a visual tour of the game before I tear into a major section has worked incredibly well for me. Instead of trying to lay things out like the visual stacking of elements on a bolt, etc.. I can verbalize that detail much easier.

Funny, personally I hate videos. I can't ever seem to be able to easily stop and zoom in on something when I need it. I take pictures, and a LOT of them, in the order I disassemble. So when I pull ball guides off, I have a picture of ever one, when I pull it off, what came off of where, etc...so reassembly sometimes (in theory) is just flipping through my pictures backwards.

The last time I used a video it was poor and of course went blurry JUST at the moment I needed to see something. But they do work well for a lot of folks. Just not me.

Quoted from Miguel351:

I noticed that about the outhole as well, too. BTW, mine was dirtier under the apron. I've got the pics to prove it, too, but I won't post here, this is your thread.

Yours may have been filthier, but was it rustier?

Further evidence that this didn't lead a hard life before being neglected...
Pulled the scoops and not a broken weld among them...!

Also the pop bumper switches are still nice and bright. These guys usually are kinda nasty, but seeing a shine on here was pretty nice.

Here's one that really shocked me...the pop bumpers don't have so much as a chip in the wafers. That, to me, is the definitive "easy life" indicator.

Gumball machine out as well.
So...I'm ready to start with the cleaning! Once I get the playfield cleaned up I need to drop all of the switches down and break out the treasure cove kit!

Its funny, this is the point where I'm half tempted to just keep going and tear everything off and swap a new playfield into this machine just because it's habit....but this machine is intended to be played.

More rusty filthy nastiness...

I almost wish I had tried to get this game running before taking it apart just to see how dull and dark everything was.
Bulbs were one of the nastier ones I've seen.

I pretty much have the playfield ready to be cleaned. Pulled down the standup targets, slings, kickers, etc. I may drop the other switches before Treasure Cove gets done, but for now it's ready for Novus. Lots and lots of Novus.

Pretty pleased (and surprised) at how well the shooter cleaned up!

If you look, the other ball trail (right above the ball gate) came up too...I really thought that was part of the artwork!

Thought about it. Thought a lot about it. But looking at this playfield, it's probably a 9.8/10. I found one small nick in it and a very very tiny bit of wear around the scoops.

I would absolutely love to drop a brand new playfield into it, but I can't justify $900 on a playfield just because this one isn't perfect. Maybe I could sell this one for $500, but still, I'm into it for another $400. I just don't think it's going to be worth it...but I think I'll start a poll and see!

#123 10 years ago

I've been all over the place on where to go with this. I know that if I swap the playfield that I'm gonna have to redo the cabinet...and then I'm getting into some serious money. Redoing the cabinet (body work and decals and stuff) is going to set me back $600 or more. Gonna go one way or the other....

Yeah...that's on the list.

Debating about doing the cabinet or not. Part of me says I should. I should do it right. I've got a local fella coming to look tomorrow and see.

#130 10 years ago

Nah..it's just "protected" well!

#133 10 years ago

Yeah, LEDs are next on tap for this.

I've got someone popping over in the next few days to take a look at my cabinets. If he thinks they are easy fixes I may have him do the cab in which case I'd probably do a new playfield too. Kind of the tipping point between just a clean player and a nice semi-restore.

#136 10 years ago

Had a little bit of time tonight between my other activities. There was some mylar around the pops that had started to come up on its own. Very nervous about pulling it since I was worried it wouldn't come up cleanly. If it hadn't started to peel on its own I would have left it.

You can actually see in one picture how much it had lifted.

To broke out the dusters and the plastic blade and every piece came right up without so much as a flake of paint on them!

#138 10 years ago

Cleaned up the adhesive left over from the mylar.

Taking a break for a bit, but still not sure if I'm just going to swap the whole thing or not. Nice clearcoated playfield sure do sound nice...

But on the other hand I can just give this a good shop job and have it back together and play it which is where I'm leaning towards.

So...kind of on the fence on the playfield issue here. Part of me just says make this game a nice player and play it...
And the OCD part of me says go with NEW NEW NEW.

But I also know myself...if I go through doing a whole new playfield I'm going to not want to play it after the fact. When I go all out on these games I never want to play them and wind up selling em.

Think I'll keep what's in it....guess that means I better order the reassembly parts!

#142 10 years ago

When i go nuts on a game and do a playfield and everything else it's so squeaky nice that I don't want to see it messed up or used. Every time I do a machine all out I just don't want to see anything on it...dirty rubbers, anything like that. So I sell them with less then a dozen plays usually.

This one I wanna keep.

Spent some time stripping the old cabinet. Man, this thing must have taken a bath on the front!
I've got a woodworking buddy coming by today to check out the two cabinets and see what can be repaired. I'm gonna get one of them done I think. Playfield probably going to stick with the original.

I was planning to clean up the lockdown receiver, but this thing is so rusty that I feel like it's not worth saving when I can get a new one for $70.

Even the ground braid is oxidized on the front side of the cabinet. Looks like the statue of liberty!

Figured I'm going to give the Treasure Cove a run at this playfield. If I can get a nice shine on it I'm definitely going to keep it. If it's still "meh" I will swap it.

For those of you who have never used it, it can get MESSY! So I made a nice little treasure cove tent on my rotisserie...

And here's some of the after-effects...this stuff gets everywhere!

OK...playfield stays

Hit with Treasure Cove power cut #2 for a bit. Then some meguiars swirl remover. Then a quick touch of wax...

Now since this is the way I'm going to go I just need to drop the rest of the switches below the playfield and get ready to "mow the lawn"

2014-03-07 19.08.36.jpg2014-03-07 19.08.36.jpg

Lots of high hopes for this weekend...
Started on some more cleanup. Kicker....taken apart, cleaned, new sleeve, and back it goes.

Note that it's not my goal to go nuts on this machine. Its going to be my player, so I'm just trying to clean it up.

My other favorite thing...scrubbing bubbles!
As you can see, this part of the playfield was pretty nasty. I know I could have stripped the bottom of the playfield bare and given it a light sanding, but, again, not where I wanted to go with this.

But little bit of scrubbing bubbles, waiting a few minutes, and a good wipe down makes a world of difference!

Tomorrow, unless I wind up picking up a new machine on a whim, I'm going to get the bottom squared away....

Getting there

This morning is "washing the boards"

2014-03-08 10.39.14-292.jpg2014-03-08 10.39.14-292.jpg 2014-03-08 10.15.42-976.jpg2014-03-08 10.15.42-976.jpg 2014-03-08 10.26.22.jpg2014-03-08 10.26.22.jpg
#175 10 years ago

Hey all. So this is a very common thing with boards. Warm (just cause I like warm) soapy water. Scrub with a toothbrush (preferably an old one). When done, rinse with isopropyl alcohol and let sit. The alcohol displaces the water and dries quickly.
Some people even run boards through the dishwasher.

The big thing with this is not to get boards with socketed chips or any ICs wet since they don't tolerate the water. Also anywhere water can get trapped is bad. People have their own different ways of doing this, but this is what's worked for me for a while.

Heck, I even do the lamp sockets!

More time reassembling. Since I will never get a better chance, figured I might as well give the optos a nice cleaning since everything else was nice and filthy.

This is from ONE opto.

Very curious to see what actually works or doesn't work when I plug this back in. Bear in mind I took it apart before really seeing what worked and didn't...so I dunno!

More ball guides going back in, some of the scoops too. I did as much as I could by memory, so now I need to break the pictures back out.

I can't get over how nasty these were. They may just have looked a little dull, but after hitting them with the scrubbing bubbles, the bubbles ran black!

Still half wishing I would have swapped the playfield, but so be it. I can always do it down the road. I guess I will also see how nice the cabinet is when it comes back to me next week. If it's fantastic, maybe I will reconsider. At this point I'm not too far gone to do a swap....I just really would not want to move over all of the wiring...

Hopefully my cabinet comes home soon.

Playfield is coming together very quickly now. Not too many posts and parts left. I need to swap the ramp hardware over which may be a bit of a project though. But for now, I'm getting closer.

2014-03-22 09.02.01.jpg2014-03-22 09.02.01.jpgThis is how I know I'm getting towards the end...my baggies are getting sparse...

Still need to repopulate the new ramp and totally tackle the mini playfield.

And of course the entire cabinet needs to be put together when it comes back to me. But progress...!

And I keep reminding myself that I never saw this machine work, so I may have a long road ahead of me tracking down issues. Who knows what boards may need love or how many dead optos I have....

New slot machine plastic. Do you think I should have gotten the new one or kept the original? I could have called it a prototype

And I figured i should clean up the powerfield. I almost don't even need to! Here's a shot of it once I undid the topside items. Yet again proof that this machine did not lead a hard life!

Unfortunately two of the switches were missing their actuators, but new ones are on the way!

Cabinet didn't make it home last night, so I puttered around with some other stuff.

Pinbits package came so I no longer can have people tell me i lost my marbles....
They didn't make it into the gumball machine yet though.

#232 10 years ago

I also picked up the "lost flasher" board from them. So TZ originally had a spot picked out for two flashers under the door panel. Lots of optional mods out there to put it back including a whole replacement board, but this pinbits one perfectly fit the bill. Connected into factory location, perfect wiring harness and even came with zip ties. You would never know it didn't come from the factory!

And last but not least, a partially put back together mini playfield. One of the switches was missing its actuator, so I'm waiting on a replacement.

Powerfield back in. Kind of. I'm waiting on one switch before I can finish it back in place. One wireform back too.

Honestly I'm really really close to being done, but without cabinet, I'm kind of drawing it out....

Not to mention once it's powered on I'm sure I'm going to have a TON of bad switches and other issues to work through...this machine hasn't been played in a decade....

Lookin' great Greg!

Gettin there! Just hoping the cabinet finds its way back home soon!

#249 10 years ago

I may go that route. My original one had ventilation holes drilled in it. Was hoping to be able to leave the clock as-is. I may leave it for a later project since it was actually working when I tested it two weeks back on a friend's TZ. The clock is one of the easier things to remove from the playfield...

But I may pick up that blue housing just because it IS a good price!

Thanks Ted...let me get it together first!

Cabinet should be incoming...!

Cleaned up the clock, put the rest of the powerfield back, put the clock bad. And rearranged the pop caps.

Yeah, it's nice to see it saved. I know full well that I could have gotten a new cabinet for it or done all new decals all around, but I personally am happy making this just a nice player, and I kind of consider it a "survivor" if that makes sense.

Besides, the "spare" cabinet I have really was much worse off. I forgot how badly the back of it was chewed up!

Had to break out the paint for some things, and figured I might as well get into the new speaker panel! As you can see the original one was pretty nasty. I ordered a new one from virtua pin and it looks nice...so it got a coat of paint. When I have time I will put in all of the t-nuts and goodies.

So for the first time in a very very long time, machine is standing on its own 4 legs!

New ground braid installed, leg plates back in, and I took my trusty paint and painted the top lip of the front and a few other small places.

Honestly, this isn't a perfect cabinet. If I find that I fall head over heels for this game and it's a keeper, I will probably do a brand new cab for it and a brand new playfield. But this is a damn nice cabinet with unreal original side artwork.

Very very happy with this, especially compared with what I started with!

Still lots to do, I need to move over the wiring, move stuff into the new head, and hopefully in a few days get the playfield put back into home!

#271 10 years ago

Yeah, it's exciting now...this is when everything starts to come together....

Tonight if I get a chance I will move the wiring over and pretty much be done with the old cabinet thankfully....

#273 10 years ago

Totally agree. Even though it was only on the front that got the new decal, it's cheap insurance to make sure that the rest of the cabinet doesn't get any worse.

#274 10 years ago

Didn't have nearly enough time last night to work on this, but started to populate the cabinet.

Unfortunately the USPS seems to have lost (or temporarily misplaced) my parts order, so my hopes of getting the cabinet together and stabbing in the playfield kind of went bust for this week...but still making progress nonetheless.

Very un-dramatic stuff the last few days, but it's still good stuff. Very very few parts left to install.

Quoted from Starscream:

Ughh as if I didn't want a TZ enough already lol,
Been following this thread from start to present, and now that you can taste the finish line I feel as if I'm getting all antsy lol, I can just imagine how you feel!
I really really hope I can find a decent TZ locally, I've been looking and nothings come up this side of the country

They do come up, but it's a matter of timing and price. There are a few around that I know of, but they are all premium prices. It's unreal to contemplate that I picked this up as a disaster for $3k, but that's what it was.

You're close, you can come on by and play once it's playing!

I know I'm getting really close, but on the other hand once it's all assembled I need to actually make it work. Who knows how many board issues or wiring issues may need to be chased down. What I've done so far is, to me, the easy part. Takes time, but it's all laid out and methodical. Troubleshooting flaky optos or switches or board issues can be a headache like no other, especially on this machine!

Got home late from work last night, and only put a little time in, but I laid the wiring back into the cabinet, transformer back home, flipper buttons, etc.

Just waiting on a new coin door, but beyond that, this cabinet is ready to get back into service!

I was thinking long and hard about putting things back in that weren't detailed and polished. And I'm content with doing that on this machine. I like calling it a survivor. That's the latest thing in cars...preserving as much original as possible and only fixing what needs to be fixed. Original patina on things, stuff like that.

I feel like I rescued this poor thing, but I still want it to bear evidence of that...

Although down the road I'm half pondering a new cabinet and playfield...

#288 10 years ago

Thanks Ted...I think

The plan is for me to get the playfield back installed this weekend at the latest....I have some time off on Friday that, if I don't wind up on another pin-adventure, I'm going to get it done...

#289 10 years ago

Well I managed to spend some "bang head against wall" time last night.

I had replaced one flipper coil a while back. I put the new flipper bats and rebuilds in and the other flipper wasn't moving smoothly. Figured maybe it had an issue with the coil even though the new sleeve went in without a problem, but that's what it seemed like.

So in went the new coil last night. And it still wasn't moving smoothly. Checked the gap on the topside. It was fine.

Wondering...wondering...

And, I'll be dipped..it was the damn brand new bushing. It was a hair longer on the bottom side and was causing the pawl to rub.

Not sure if it's a defective bushing or something designed for a different machine, but man what a head smacker....

And so, that done, I could reassemble just about the rest of the playfield. I have a flasher socket to replace to get the back left plastic back, but everything else is there....this playfield is going to be going into it's home very soon!

And yes, I'm going to rebuild the clock with a nice new housing down the road too, but for now I know it's working, so I don't want to mess with it. Yet.

Really is crazy how nasty it started out to now. Very well done. I finally got time to play this last weekend and finally "get" the game. It's a great game: so many shots, features, etc. There's never something not to shoot for it seems.
Keep up the great work.

Yeah. I've played a few. First few times I played I really got turned off to the game. They were just not well tuned or maintained so I walked away from it just thinking it was a massive dark abyss of a table with impossible shots. Then I got my hands on two buddies with them and it was like night and day!

Installed the playfield pivots. So so close....

2014-04-04 21.43.37.jpg2014-04-04 21.43.37.jpgTechnically I could probably fire up the machine now, but without a display, not much to be seen.

I ordered this replacement panel a little while ago and it's finally time to get it done!

Unfortunately one of my arch enemies was waiting for me..T-Nuts! Smacked home all of the ones VirtuaPin included. Very nicely. Went to mount the first screw and realized that they included the wrong size. Damn thing came with #6 nuts. And ever fastener on the old one was #8. Luckily I had a bunch of them on hand, so i had the fun time of removing the old ones and putting the new ones in.

So I'm even closer! But I have a fun day out with the wife today, so this is going to have to wait till later....

And sound.

Wonder why I got a credit dot...maybe the entire playfield unplugged has something to do with it?

Man I love having a rotisserie...playfield can be hooked up without putting it in the cabinet!

#322 10 years ago

And we have life! Kind of.

I think I have a LOT of work to do. No flashers. Who knows what else. But I also have limited troubleshooting abilities since the coin door is a disaster. I actually am not even going to fix it since I gave in and have a brand new one coming Monday. So I can't even go through the menus and tests. But it's a start!

Really stinks not knowing what was actually working on here before...

You know, I really hate trying to put these in after the playfield is installed....

Unfortunately with the way the playfield sits on the rotisserie I can't do it any other way. This and the gumball popper and the rear diverter all needed to be pulled out and couldn't be put back in until just now.

So here we are! Lots and lots of things not working. Let's see..most coils dead, no flashers, bunch of stuff. I am going to see if I can at least get the coin door temporarily hooked up to run through some tests later.

So now comes the fun...making it all work!

It's actually not as bad as I thought so far. I need to go through every switch still, but it looks like I've got one switch row totally out which I need to actually track down and see if it's an issue with the CPU or wiring. But game boots and goes into attract which is a lot better than I thought I'd be!

2014-04-07 18.52.03.jpg2014-04-07 18.52.03.jpgReally happy this came...I've restored these before, but this machine needs a new one.

Only boneheaded mistake of the day (so far) is I had it shipped to work so I had to lug the darn thing home with me on the subway...

Nope...I was a typical anti-social NYC commuter Besides, this is New York...someone walking around with a coin door is definitely NOT the most exciting thing.

#331 10 years ago

Took a little video this evening. Trying to see if I can get it uploaded.

Got all of the flashers working, almost all of the lights working...

I have to track down a few switch issues maybe tomorrow. Need to go through every switch and see what's what. Thinking I have a break in the switch row somewhere.

New coin door is pretty snazzy

Here we go

#334 10 years ago

Pretty neat, right?

So I was happy that I got all of the flashers working last night. I just need to figure out the switches. Thankfully I have my IJ sitting right next to it which uses all of the same boards, so I played musical boards last night and the issues didn't go away which tells me that the problem is with the machine itself and NOT the boards. Big relief there. So I have to go through the switch matrix tonight and test everything to see what's what.

I really want to rebuild the clock NOW, but mentally I'm trying to hold off until Pinfest and pick one up from rottendog directly and save the cash....

#337 10 years ago

Yep. Made it really happy to see that. I really figured I'd have to swap a board. But looking at the matrix, I actually see I get something back from every row and column, so that's a very good sign it's just a broken wire somewhere. I just wish there wasn't quite so many wires

#338 10 years ago

2014-04-08 19.25.44.jpg2014-04-08 19.25.44.jpgChased down at least most of my problems. Broken switch row. Found it and repaired it.

So time to feed this puppy some nice new balls

Here's a beautiful thing. We ready?

TZ booting without a credit dot!

Still need to tweak some switches and, idiot, I forgot to order a new shooter, so I can't actually launch a ball.

And my flippers are having some issues. But stuff I can work through!

#341 10 years ago

I may see if I can take another video of it later. Yeah, it's crazy bright with the LED flashers. I usually hate them, but they look perfect here.

#343 10 years ago
Quoted from mof:

Imo, it depends when flashers are used in a game:
1) quickly flash to announce you did something good (without moments of dark)
2) flash (dark to full-on) to blind you when you earn a 2nd ball on the playfield to make you drain...
I'm no fan of LED flashers in general, but I'd be far more ok with scenario 1) than 2).
-mof

I dunno...they just seem to work well here!

So just in case anyone was wondering, and even if you weren't...I'm just waiting on two important things to continue my work on this machine...
A shooter rod and new flipper switches. The original shooter I still have, but it's rusty and nasty, and not going to put it in. And the flippers are a little flaky, so waiting on new flipper boards. Both are in the mail on the way to me...

So for now I have a TZ I can turn on, but can't plunge a ball or use the flippers....!

#344 10 years ago

Mailman brought the important parts this morning!

Quoted from johnwartjr:

Pinball Life used to sell a set of coin door buttons for WPC's that plugged into the coin door interface board, and allowed you to run diagnostic tests without a coin door installed.
I have one, and use it *frequently*. Real useful to troubleshoot lots of stuff, like if a button on a door doesn't work - plug it in, try it out, see if the problem is the door, or the boards etc.
Might see if Terry has any more!

John,

The issue was just the switches. They were destroyed. I had a new set on hand, but in the end, the coin door was beaten up, the switches were destroyed, and for $140 it just was easier to swap a new one. I was able to test what I needed to test with the old one by just jumping the switches to run through the tests.

#348 10 years ago

Oh, and John, that's a Leopard.

#349 10 years ago

Mmm...new boards and shooter....

#351 10 years ago

Well, here you have it..a TZ that boots with no errors!

And these are probably the strongest and snappiest flippers I've had in a long time...

#356 10 years ago

Thank you John, thank you Mof, bite me Ted!

Gonna maybe play it a little bit tonight if I get a chance, but going to do that family thing for a while!

2014-04-16 19.59.32.jpg2014-04-16 19.59.32.jpgNot shockingly, my trough prox boards were nonfunctional. I read the options to repair them, but found this replacement set for $50. Transferred over the bracket, some new rivets, and installed it is...works like a champ!

I need to go through every switch on the game to check it out, but I'm pretty sure this is a working game! Played a game last night and it's SO not level, but I actually played...I'm a happy camper!

Just waiting for Allentown to pick up some new glass and a new clock board....

Nah. Plain old glass. Not crazy about the invisiglass actually!

#363 10 years ago

Just unreal how it turned out...tonight I will see if I can take some decent pictures.

#365 10 years ago

Thanks...tonight or tomorrow I'm going to take some nice pictures of it....never thought I'd be able to play it...and NEVER thought I'd be able to play it this quickly. Figured a few weeknights of board work. Absolutely blown away that the boards were all perfect...

#367 10 years ago
