Excited to be picking up a FREE 1983 Bally Grand Slam tomorrow!

My parents non-collector friend is doing a bunch of work on his house and just wants it gone.

He warned me that it has some “electrical problems”. Considering the price I’m not worried haha.

Just for fun, how about we guess what “electrical problems” means? I’ll update when I get it figured out.

Nice!! You can always convert it to a custom Simpsons pin you already have the "HOMER" drop targets.

#3 3 years ago

Tell hi you need the other pop bumper cap or the deal is off.

Nice score! Congrats!

My guess on the electrical - batteries have leaked.

Battery acid is worst case scenario. Fingers-crossed it’s not that.

Marco has some cool baseball themed pop bumper caps I might use.

Maybe change the H to B and make a porno pin.

... bomer?

#7 3 years ago

Oops, gotta change the M too.

#8 3 years ago

Urban Dictionary definition of bomer might work here.

Funny stuff, lets stick with the M.

No worries, it's just a fuse.

I hope not too, for your sake. Fuse or connector, more than likely. Cant beat the price regardless!!

“electrical problems”

When someone says this, I would be prepared to find a game that does not even turn on.
But for the price its okay haha

It’s probably the mpu board and/or connectors just like every old Bally.

Mpu costs $200. Connectors cost time.

Wouldn’t care if the mpu is toast. You are better off with a new one anyway those boards are great.

#14 3 years ago

I say “you fuse, you lose”. Cannot wait until it’s working so I can play ball!

#15 3 years ago

Wow congrats!! Free plays the best!

#16 3 years ago

Looks like a really nice game. Looks fun also.

Alternative to Alltek is $158. https://nvram.weebly.com/new-pcbs.html

Congratulations and hope it's easy to get going.

I’ve probably used 25 alteks over the years, been rock solid. I’ll stick with em.

Maybe a carriage bolt fuse...

Maybe you feel more like it fell in your lap, but here are stories of other free games:

I love that game... Awesome. I used to play the heck out of it when it first came out. That's a total score. I love the artwork too.

No battery alkaline is the worst case scenario. Use an acid to treat it.

#24 3 years ago

Good game, good score. Congratulations!

Bitchin score

Brings back to mind a telephone conversation about a pin for sale ad. The guy told me his pin had a weak fuse, the game would light up but not play. Told me it was only a weak fuse, he knows this. He claimed to be a lek-trish-un.

#27 3 years ago

Got to love those deals. How does the cab and backbox look?

#28 3 years ago

Very unique and fun layout. As far as why it's not working, probably something simple. People who aren't in the hobby usually shut the machine off permanently at the first little issue. Even if it's battery leak, as Levi said, that problem has a simple and fairly inexpensive fix.

Nice score!

I recently had an Altek lamp driver board that was only 2 months old have an SCR go bad, was very surprised. Good thing they have a lifetime guarantee. I contacted them and explained and they sent replacement SCR in the mail and I fixed the board myself

A little more information.

I picked up the game today but have yet to plug it in. I actually unloaded it directly into my moving container instead of into my house. Might be a couple weeks before I dig into it.

When I was taking it apart to transport I found the original MPU in the cabinet and an Altek board in the head. Some of the connectors looked as though they were replaced. The owner said he had his electrician friend work on it. We shall see! The game looks to be in pretty good shape!

It is likely battery acid. Either way...you can't beat free.

I'm still waiting on my first free pin. My record so far is 15 bucks, but I had to drive almost 3 hours to get it. Still, I can't complain.

#33 3 years ago

If anyone deserves a free game - it’s a nice member of the community like you!

I deserve MANY free games, but I digress.

Congrats man!

#34 3 years ago

That’s a good sign there’s 2 boards. My assumption is a complicated switch matrix issue that the previous owner assumed a new board would fix. My bet is that old MPU isn’t that bad and could be fixed.

Great score. I can’t wait for the updates
