Quoted from HoakyPoaky:He's probably wondering if he get dibs on that playfield White Russian
You know it!
rd
Is that yoga?
It increases the chances of conception.
Gary *spits drink*
Increases?
-or-
Gary, you're out of your element!
-and-
This cab could use a nice AMC...oops I mean an AMF logo.
Quoted from CaptainNeo:Was he drinking a white russian?
One after the other as preorders were being cancelled.
A lot of swipes for the company that kept at it while everyone else went home. Where would the hobby be right now if Gary hadn't taken a chance? Does Stern need to innovate, yes.
Why wouldn't he look at it. That's just smart business. I would be more concerned about the manufacturers that are setting at there booths not looking at the other new products.
That's what I'd be doing if my name was on a pinball company and i wanted to keep it around as long as possible.
Gary never glanced at the backglass.. That 'Pinball Wizard Lady' almost nudges Gary, surly he would of spilt his drink then.
That game looks amazing. I'm sure he was thinking the same. If b/w were still making.. This is the type of product I'd expect, and that's a big compliment
Quoted from AbacusMan:One of these days... I will fist bump Gary Stern.
dude made BBH pro. you gotta!
when it's all said and done, Gary Stern is the only one who can pump out games with any significant numbers. They still have the market cornered if you want to see more than 1 game every two years. Sorry.
Quoted from davewtf:when it's all said and done, Gary Stern is the only one who can pump out games with any significant numbers.
Not a big fan of the Pump-n-Dump model. Quality over quantity any day.
Gary is a nice guy in person.
You see him checking out everything at a show, from strange Euro games like Bushido to all the homemade P-roc titles.
Its cool to see Gary checking things out.. And Steve and Lyman at VIP party. No need to bag on Stern, they are pinheads too. If they werent around none of the other efforts would be happening either cause it would of died off.
It is funny that Gary looks like he could be holding a white Russian though
Quoted from judremy:Looks like he left at the end after the machine was reporting "balls missing". Is that an error?
yes, the machine hung up after picking up the spare in the lower alley. don't know if was time or some gentle shaking that got things freed up and the game continued without issue. Ball came back onto the upper playfield like a rocket when it finally reappeared.
Quoted from labnip:i wonder if Gary placed a pre-order for TBL ?
I don't think he cares much about the high end HUO mkt since he has a strong foothold on the commercial side of things.

So easy to forget the LE model represents a very large chunk of all Stern sales, especially in the U.S...
Quoted from Baiter:So easy to forget the LE model represents a very large chunk of all Stern sales, especially in the U.S...
I would think vault, pro and premiums would out sell the LEs.
Why should gary change his format? Why put in all the time and effort to put that much detail into a game like TBL, when you guys line up to buy his games as is? Dutch Pinball team can put in more effort and energy because they are boutique. Gary sells more to the masses. Has to keep things simple, serviceable and parts easily mass produced.
Quoted from labnip:i wonder if Gary placed a pre-order for TBL ?
No, but I bet $10K by Christmas that he did pre-order one of these:
Full Throttle Wet Wooly Bunny Lebowski LE (Fu-TWWBLLE). Zeus manicured toe trim package included at N/C.
Are we saying that the Dutch Pinball guys have never looked at a Stern Machine before?
Because....apparently that would be a big deal.
Quoted from pmWolf:Are we saying that the Dutch Pinball guys have never looked at a Stern Machine before?

It's a big deal because looked and saw there was a need for rugs to cover the ugly Wellverine, Smog and TH book mods.
I don't fault him for checking out other pins.
I'd only fault him if he shut down his shop so he could make more money manufacturing casino games.
But Gary's not that kind of guy, fortunately.
Gary's more of a business man than a major pinball fan. All I think he sees are numbers. He looks at TBL and sees the amount of detail, numerous extra custom parts and custom toys, and overall complexity in build, and starts tallying up the numbers in his head to see if it's worth it to pursue that level of detail. I'm sure he sees things he'd like to do, but knows that doing them in the quantities he sells, the ability of his workforce, and at the margin he has on his machines, he probably can't make it as profitable as he'd like. A company that size needs to maintain a solid percentage profit margin to stay healthy and a game as busy as TBL probably just won't get made at a company like Stern.
They've got money going towards future developments, sure. But those developments are largely aimed at making production quicker, easier, and cheaper. The nice thing is that they also make servicing the games easier, too. Have they started implementing the ribbon cable-based system under the playfield yet? I don't know only because I haven't seen. Or was that only for "The Pin"?
Stern has no reason to make major changes until buyers start voting with their wallets. If Stern's pinball pie suddenly shrinks to less than half, they might be forced into adding features like their competition. The only advantage they have right now is that they are an established company with a long track record with well known proven designers. The greatest pinball in the world from a startup isn't going to match Stern.. But give dutch pinball a few more hit titles with great parts support and customer service, and they just might be going back for second desserts.
If he didn't look people would have said something as well ... Damed if ya do.... Damed if ya dont!!!

Well my bucks are going overseas to a group of clog wearing Pballers. And I am not the only one. Plus after this show Stern, JJP, Skit B, and Jpop found out that there are about 5 others pimping their wares that are not f'ing around. Ignore the waring shots at your own peril. Otherwise you may end up like the dodo bird. A changing of the guard is taking place w/DP,Heighway, Spooky,Roit Pinball, P3 and Python.

Preaching to the choir brother!!!!
I am sure Gary got a kick out of the guys having to shake the shit out of the game so the VUK would try to find the ball . When shaking did not do the trick the coin door was opened and they had to get into the menu to manually make the VUK fire so the game would play .
Seen that happen all night .
Quoted from McCune:I am sure Gary got a kick out of the guys having to shake the shit out of the game so the VUK would try to find the ball
Must have been the one at expo. The one at PBL only had a reset issue with the bash toy switch.
Wizard of oz had far more issues at first showing. If it wasn't shutting down, the ball was getting stuck in ball lock, which usually meant tilting the machine to the side 45 degrees.
Quoted from Giardiasis:give 'em away" without adequately charging for them
8500 plus shipping is charging for them !
