So I'm restoring a Cyclone. Doing a fairly extensive restore on it, and I had to touch up the mystery wheel. First of all, it is already busted in the back. Finding a new wheel WITH a sticker on it is mission impossible. Speaking of the sticker, that was pretty badly scratched in a few places where a lot of white showed where it is supposed to be blue.

So out of desperation, I decided to go to Menards and have them color match the unsightly spot. This is where I meet my nemesis.

His name was Kyle. I told Kyle what it was that I had hoped to do, and he started asking question I could never know the answer to. "What kind of paint do you want?" I said, "whatever matches best with this. You see, I'm trying to restore this and I want it to be as close as I can." He said how he meant "Dutchboy" or "Paint... um... Brothers." Whatever the fuck paint companies there are. I obviously made that last one up. I told him how I didn't know. Just anything to match this as best as he could, and that he was the expert.

Before I continue this story, I'm a bit... how should I put it... eccentric. I like things to be nice and a certain way. I mean, my god, I'm painting a 34 year old wheel that nobody is ever gonna see for crying out loud.

He takes it from me, and after some blah blahs, he takes it to his machine. He is handling this unobtanium wheel with zero fucks. He scratches at the sticker a bit, trying to determine what to do. Inside I scream, but outwardly i said, "just be careful with this. I'm trying to restore this please." Like, the last thing I need is to touch up more and have it look even more like ass.

So good ol Kyle pushes the wheel up to the eye, and as it is pushing (gridning) against the metal he sorta spins it a few times. I am freaking out. He then looks at it and starts to PICK THE DECAL OFF. I said "Good God, don't DO that! Bro, for Christ sake I'm trying to restore it." After a lot more hamfistery, he drops it on the ground. Did I tell you it already was cracked? Like, why?

So I finally just pick but up off the floor and find the closest color in the swatches i could find. Truth be told, I didnt wish to see what this idiot's encore was going to be. I ask him to make that paint instead because I didnt wish to see what he would do next.

I... I guess that's the end of the story. No real climax or end. I guess the paint matches pretty well. I attached a pic so you can see how it's coming along.

Been through similar situations in the past. My lesson learned is go to an actual professional paint store (e.g. Sherwin-Williams) and ask for their help in matching. A bit more expensive but, in my experience, they are at least semi-professional, have some nice paint matching tools and experience, and can help you find right type of paint for the application.

You know that scene in the 1st fast n furious with Ted getting that oil spigot in his mouth getting pumped full of oil…Ya Kyle on the ground with a funnel in his mouth…

This was not the story I was expecting.

    #5 2 years ago

I would have probably went full Karen and asked to see his manager. Mistakes happen. Sure... I get that.
But, the way he was handling it and picking at it. Just uncalled for and then dropping it. I would have been livid and raised a crap storm. I would have minded my p's and q's. But, I would give them an earful of polite complaining.

    #6 2 years ago

I was remiss... Good luck with your restore. Hope you posts lots of pics of your journey!

I wish I could vote for both options in the poll!

    #9 2 years ago

    You don't kill boys..stupid option.

Op sounds like a drama queen.

Going to a big box for this was the first mistake. There was zero chance Kyle was going to help in any way.

As I read the story, this was my first thought. Always go to a real paint store for any paint.

Second mistake was handing over the part after initial impression of Kyle. At least jorant kept his cool.

I use Sherwin Williams for all my paint. Besides having a contractor discount, I've hauled cabinets heads in whole to get a match. For more difficult matches I use the Pantone color wheel and go thru every swatch to find a match.

    You've already fucked up.

    Karens don't complain politely.

Yeah Karen’s don’t ask to speak the manager. They DEMAND to speak to the manager. Sincerely a Karen

I like Kyle Korver. But he’s not at his best “in the paint” either.

    "Hey you, with the paint!"

    #20 2 years ago

I always use hobby grade paint. Shit lasts forever, and I have a whole shelf full. I take the parts or a good picture if I gotta match w/ me to find the closest match if I can, from there I cut it to customize w/ whites or blacks…
It’s never perfect, but I’ve gotten damn close! Better than Kyle can do for sure!

Your first mistake was going to a big box store for paint match

Second mistake was handing something irreplaceable to the first warm body that crossed your path. There are talented people in the big box stores but they are few and far between. If you do enough business there, seek them and only them out. Just as you recognize the ones who are a waste of space and avoid.

My son is Kyle, he doesn't know much about paint but he is the guy who goes behind enemy lines and put a laser designator on a target so the air force boys can drop ordinance on it.

Here is a picture of him after giving a speech at West Point with a 4 star. He is a US Army cavalry scout.

This may be the oddest random flex I have ever seen. But thank you for your service.

Just having a good natured poke at people making Kyle jokes.

You can go to big box stores, but nothing they can break is recommend. I hauled the head off my Space Shuttle down to Home Depot and got a perfect paint match. They actually get a kick out of doing something different and usually sparks a good conversation about pinball.

This reminds me of when I was trying out a local framer after moving to a new area.
The guy had great reviews online, he knew what he was talking about when it came to using archival materials and his prices were great.
I handed him the $1800 print I wanted framed and he laid it out on his bench.
He then proceeded to measure it with a meter long stick, and because it was just longer than that on one side he marked it with a pencil so he cloud slide the stick down and get the full measurement.
I almost started screaming when I saw what he did with the pencil. Luckily he was able to fully remove the mark without damage but jtfc who does that?
Needless to say I told him I'd think about it and took the print back. He's only handled cheap art for me since then because his prices are still very good.

Still confused by why the "woke" generation has canceled almost everything but has decided it's OK to make fun of people's names.

Semi-related: I never ask for help at a hardware store unless they're older than I am.

Dunno if a guy with a username that includes Elvis is likely to be a part of the Zoomer/Millenial generation but that's a good point. It's an immutable characteristic after all.
Don't lump us all in together either, there are based Zoomers (like myself)

Pretty sure I can guess what Kyle thinks of this angry middle aged OCD man at the counter asking him to help repair his antique toy.

Ohhh, I actually thought he was going to kill him. That explains why there’s no “Please dont kill him” option in the poll.
