I have a prototype Congo. From the history I was given, I am the third owner and it has never been routed. As far as condition, I would say it's a 9.5/10. It has a couple small spots of wear on the head from the previous owner moving it and two small scratches on the translite. It has all of the features of a prototype from IPDB. It was produced a month before official production started. I also have a preliminary manual that goes with it. I'm not sure it's a keeper for me. Does anyone know if the prototype version of this games is worth anymore? I have a grail game that I want to fund and this might be on the chopping block. Thanks for your help.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

It’s pretty filthy inside and it’s got an import coin door with wear from quarters going into the slot.
Nice game but I don’t think you’ll get too far with the HUO claims.

That's true. I couldn't figure that piece out. The person that I bought it from told me that it was originally purchased by his company to have in the office. He said that he took it home 15 years ago when he retired.

The flipper is fine. I was leaning on it as I took the photo.

I'll get a new photo with the left flipper corrected in it.... I took photos while I was in the process of rebuilding them. I've played the game since then and they're fine. I just need to clean up my act....

Doesn't everyone play with one flipper pointing up?? (Sarcasm)

Updated with more recent photos of the flippers for your viewing pleasure.

Also added photos of the back of boards. They are green like every other Williams that I've owned

Quoted from mollyspub:

Too bad about the fade on one side. Love the red boards! Things like led choices and a dirty cabniet are easy fixes. Not may Congos out there anyways so this would be a nice pick up imo.

Maybe I need to get better photos. This is the only Congo that I've ever owned so I can't really compare it to anything other than what's online. In person, the sides don't look faded to me. The sides of the back box are pretty much gray, but not faded.

Quoted from RazerX:

This cab is not faded on one side. The color difference is intended. I also have a proto Congo and the cab looks just like this in terms of color. My backbox is actually a No Fear head though, which looks kinda cool IMO.

Thanks for the info. That's kinda why I started this thread. Other than IPDB, not much exists out there.

Quoted from metallik:

Your proto got faded the same way then. It's crazy to think they went with that weird color scheme on protos only and changed to normal for production..
Normal right side:

Another faded right side, this one towards the rear

Mine was also partially faded on one side. You can even see the reds in the gorilla mouth are faded in the example shown in this thread.

That makes sense. It seems like the one side is definitely missing the color of the other side. I guess there's about a 50% chance of one side being faded versus the other in a room where light comes from one side.

Quoted from noitbe1:

What would be interesting is to reference the difference proto vs production. If no difference, the proto don’t bring much more value than prod.

According to IPDB, Here are its differences from the production game:
1. The apron is a lighter green
2. The inserts leading to the left ramp are 3-2-1 instead of M-A-P.
3. The yellow arrow insert for the upper right saucer does not say 'Video'.
4. The yellow insert pointing up the volcano ramp only says 'Collect' instead of '3X Collect'
5. The scoops for the saucers are silver instead of black.
6. The insert closest to the lower saucer says 'See Map' instead of just 'Map' and is purple instead of green.
7. The 'Skill Fire' insert is green instead of purple.
8. Red circuit boards all underneath the playfield.

Is it possible that the overseas coin door was used because they had extra laying around at the time and it's a prototype not production?

#51 2 years ago

I agree with Levi and listing it as "I was told HUO" as I don't want to misrepresent anything. Here is a close up if the coin slot. To me it doesn't even look used. There is some wear on the coin door. This game was kept in the house of a non pinhead with kids, so it's not like it didn't see use. I also know that it was serviced at least once because I found a little solder in the cab. The "dirt" in the bottom of the cab looks to me like someone placed a wet rag in there briefly and it allowed the dust to set if that makes sense.

Quoted from elcolonel:

Your thread compelled an F.S. ad for a proto at $9199.00

I don't feel that I was really able to nail down what I felt I should ask for it. Some people thought it was worth a couple hundred more than a regular Congo. Others thought it was worth a lot more. I had to think to myself, what would Stern do?? So, that's what I did.

To be honest, I might be having second thoughts about selling it.

Quoted from mollyspub:

I certainly wouldn't let this go...HIPPOS!

That might end up being the case. Unfortunately, that means I need to let my Gorgar go and I just don't know if I'm ready for that...
