Quoted from Diane_Sauer:

I was lucky being in New Jersey where many an arcade could be found. The longest running one was a Spaceport which was up in the Quakerbridge mall. It was near the main entrance so even after the mall closed it was open as was the movie theater across the hall and the pizza place next door. The photo is from back in the day (very early 80's) though I am not 100% on the year.

I found some old photos in my uncle's house. He lived a long time in North America. I do not have more data than the pics.
I'll share them with you

By chance, did anyone know this arcade? This photo I think is from the mid 70's
It could be that it was near to "Owen Sound " in Ontario, Canada. Someone knows?

Old Photo for an old thread.......

Tilt, Laguna Hills Mall, California. Due to the presence of Rapid Fire, at least Circa April 1982 but it could be a bit later.

Pretty sure the Yellow head frame was Close Encounters as I remember. Meteor and I think Stellar Wars next to Superman. The rest are pretty easy except for the 2 up close on the right.

I own that EBD, wish I had bought the Solar Fire back in the day too.

Oh yeah,I remember Freedom Land. I remember it being a little more exciting than that video.

I worked in an arcade in the 70s called The Electric Playhouse in Mount Kisco NY. I guess thats when this madness started for me. It is there that I met my wife to be.

#211 6 years ago

Wow. Tilt in the Laguna Hills mall was the arcade I went to when I was a kid. I used to ride bikes with my older brother up there all the time. I had on idea it was that old. I guess its been around since before I was born. It was still going strong in the early 90's. I remember the place being very dark, and loud. They had like red carpet on the big angled walls that led inside. They had red tickers built in the wall displaying messages too. But my memories are fuzzy for sure. I must have been in like third grade. It was the best place ever when I was little. Never was the same after they moved it upstairs. Sad when they closed it completely.

This thread has been fantastic! I really appreciate OP and the many who've contributed photos and stories.

I'd been to many, many arcades in the States and Europe, but had never seen anything quite like Arnie's Place in Westport, CT. He went over the top trying to make it decidedly UN-seedy/smoky/etc. but there was still much drama with local authorities.

Here's a site about it: http://www.arniesplacearcade.com/
And here's a fantastic essay about it that anyone who's enjoyed this thread will also really like: http://theferrett.livejournal.com/2005/03/28/

Your memory is pretty darn good. Opened some time in 1978.

Floor and wall carpet was dark brown and a Dark Orange/red at the entry ramp. There were large Orange soffits hanging down from the ceiling spiked outward into the arcade area in front part of the store.

Those moving signs were long before LED message signs. They were called SalesCasters as I recall. The message read: Welcome to Tilt .... Please No Smoking, Eating or Drinking. (as I recall). It was a rubbery belt with holes punched in it. Looped back and forth many times in the small cabinet. The front glass was special too with scattered bumps on the surface to mix up the straight linear motion of the dots of the tape. Original fluorescent bulbs were yellow (like our sign) but later replaced with the more cost effective green bulbs.

The store wasn't as dark as our Gold Mines were. And certainly not as bright as our over-lit Electronic America in Hawthorne Plaza. But the Employees were known to turn off the lights when they weren't supposed to. Especially when the AC was broken!

Yes, getting moved up into the food court into a smaller space was the beginning of a slow death for that location.

I used to work there and when the games came up for sale, I jumped on it (games were sold off every Christmas time). I even did a playfield swap on it when I worked there. So I had to have it!!! I also bought my Flight 2000 there but we have parted company.

I just wish I had the sense (and money) at the time to buy the Twilight Zone ($595), and Addams Family ($795). Our games were always extremely nice cosmetically.

Hi all !!
Santiago Ciuffo, an Argentine friend, sent me this photo last week of a bag from Aladdin's Castle. He was given it by Fred, an american friend of him, who told him it was from an Aladin´s Castle from Buffalo, NY, back in the year '83. Do you remember this ?

In case you don´t know , Santiago Ciuffo is an Argentine photographer and is the author of Santiago Ciuffo's PINBALL book, an excellent book that I was fortunate to buy last year. I leave the link from pinside, in case you want more information

A short video documentary regarding Playland Arcade.
The Pennsylvania State University (University Park), State College, PA, 1968-2003.
Playland pinball technician, 1991-1994.

You only need to fast forward 30 years from some of the photos I originally provided.
It is short time capsule to allow enthusiasts the transmutation of arcades starting from the 1960s to its final blows in the early 2000s.
Gene Steele, senior manager, "In the beginning, it was mainly pinball..."
He started each work day at 4 AM.
The video was posted in 2006.

I remember the bags. There was a local arcade here called pin pan alley that used to do these wrist fanny packs filled with tokens. That way you didn't need pockets but could still keep your tokens with you without carrying a bag around.

I remember the bags from back in the eighties, but never a red one. The ones I remember were always deep blue with gold embroidery and pull strings. I probably still have a couple, but I'll have to dig them up.

Thanks for the data !!, I really don't know, I just told what they told me. Maybe they had different color in different places, this one was from Buffalo. Maybe someone has more data. Try to dig up them !! Thanks again

It's a shame about Playland...the smoky, seedy, late night destination of Penn State student geeks and nerds for decades. I loved it there in the mid 90s. It was the crown jewel arcade after spending my youth growing up in mall arcades.

Campus Casino was ok, pool hall and arcade combo.

But Playland was where I went either after a night at the bars or when I was burned out from studying.

I remember those bags very well as I used to sell them when I worked at an Aladdin's Castle arcade in W. Dundee IL back in the 80's after school and on the weekends. The red/green ones were sold around Christmas time. They were black & gold for the rest of the year. (30 tokens for $5 by the bag, where $5 bought you 20 tokens at the machine) In the late 80's we sold token tubes you could wear around your neck. They were in neon colors (green, yellow, pink) Same deal as the bags, just more 'fashionable' for the times... I think I still have my name tag & vest, but I'm sure the vest doesn't fit anymore...

Hello guys !! My friend César found a couple of photos from his aunt's arcade called Singapur. The interesting thing about the photo is if you can guess what pinballs are. There are 3.
I could not, but Cesar gave me the answers!

Here is a short award winning film mostly shot in my local arcade filmed in1980.
Casino Arcade Downtown Hamilton Ontario Canada.
It closed for good in 2002.
This is basically a look back in time. Cool that the creator posted this to our local pinball league.

I don´t know if someone had already published it, I don´t think so
Time-Out Fox Hills Mall, formerly Sega Center Fox Hills Mall in Culver City was an indoor Time-Out (Sega Center) arcade once owned by Sega during the 1970s and 1980s.
The Fox Hills Mall venue appears to have been one of the more successful indoor arcades to be operated by Sega. It features in the 1983 horror film Nightmares and in 1977, Carrie Fisher did a promotional interview for Star Wars within the Sega Center.
On the right, you can see the reflection of the Orange Julius stand.
