I just acquired a 1967 Williams Shangri-La. The machine is in great condition and appears to work fully, as far as I can tell. The machine has not been hacked up or abused, and has been with the same owner for the last 50 years in a climate controlled room. This is my first pinball machine and I'm pretty good with a multi-meter, soldering, and general mechanical work. I did some light cleaning all around, replaced the usual rubber parts, lamps, and put in a new ball.

The machine is set to free play: When the front left red button is pushed, the machine turns on, resets, and starts a 2 player game. How do I undo this so that coins must be used? My only research indicates that the 'credit wheel' might be where free play was set. I don't want to break anything by guessing, so I'm seeking advice from people who are likely to know what to do.

Thanks!

The credit wheel you can manually advance and reverse by pushing on the two coil plungers. There should be a pin on the wheel that rotates and opens up a switch when the credit reaches 0. Chances are that switch is either bent closed or jumpered to always be closed. Or another way is some people remove wires from the advance coil and reverse coil on the credit wheel to keep the credit wheel in a certain spot which keeps that switch closed.

If you do take it off free play than you need to make sure coin mechs work along with all the relays in the game that are associated with coining up the game.

Depends on how they setup free play. Sometimes people add a wire from button to coin switch so it "adds coin" at same time it uses credit. Also bending the contact on the credit wheel in the head has been used. Reset credit wheel to zero then check if pin has pushed open leaf switch if not adjust switch to open should work. Should only be two wires (usually yellow) going to backside of start button if it has more and they run to coin switch just remove.

Thanks for the replies! Where is the credit wheel typically located on a machine of this vintage? Will it most likely be labeled "Credit wheel", or could it have some other name?

Congrats on your first machine! Why would you want to take it off free play? Most new owners talk about it, some do it, but they all seem to put it back on free play after a while.

Look at the small square by the 3rd player. The # of credits is printed on the credit wheel that moves.

If you didn't know that, you may not be ready to dive in and make the change right now.

Play it for a while and enjoy it. Don't risk messing something up this early in your ownership, that's why a lot of people get frustrated with pinball.

If you still want to make it coin op in a month, then we can walk you through it.

Good advice. Take your time.

Your credit wheel is in the head, behind the red square I've added to your photo.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks again for the continued details. Well, this explains a mystery about this machine: The window to nowhere. I thought this machine was all original, but there is no wheel of numbers showing the number of plays. The mechanism appears to be there (labeled as "REPLAY UNIT"), but there's no wheel. There's a shaft with a couple of loose washers and a nut.

The start button only has two wires.

Here's the circuit that should disable the Replay Button when the Replay (RP in the attached picture) Unit has 0 credits. Your replay unit may still have that switch.

Are the coin mech’s and wiring still connected to the coin door? It is very common for these to be missing on most EM’s. Operators removed them before they sold them so they wouldn’t go back out on route. Only two of my 12 games still have them, and they still did not work. If someone went through the trouble of removing the credit wheel, I wouldn’t be surprised if the coin mech’s were missing.

Yes, all three coin mechanisms are there and look to be intact. The wiring is there.

Thanks for posting that. I'll have to open it back up and look for such a switch. I actually printed out the whole schematic on paper but quickly realized that it's a vastly different beast than the actual wiring in the game, in terms of complexity. The schematic is pretty straightforward due to the organized layout.
