Any suggestions on how to tighten smooth metal posts, (like the ones at the entrance of the Space Shuttle ramp?) I can't seem to get a decent grip and don't want to tear them up.

Where the rubber would hide the scratches, a vicegrips.

You can also put a cloth around the post before under the vice grips if you want to try and avoid any scratches.

The catch-22 is that those rubbers were so very difficult to get on, I am loath to remove them.

You could cut a small piece of rubber hose and then use that as protection against the pliers at the top.

But I agree with you on getting those on and off. I usually end up cutting them off assuming the rubber is still malleable.
