Welcome to the craziness!
According to something I found elsewhere...
Change setting #18 Max Credits to zero, leave #23 Coin Units required for credit set to default 1.
I'd try it out, but unfortunately, me no have a Comet.
yea, I read this "zero max credit" thing on ed chung's site. Apparently that's not even in the manual. Of course some idiot I bought my space shuttle from drilled a hole in the coin cabinet and wired in a switch.

I don't get that. Why don't they just jumper the coin switch to the start button? Is that trick limited only to Bally's?
I think that almost all solid state pinball machines have a setting for "free play" (although it may not be a published setting). I know that my parent's gottlieb "the dragon" had one, and that machine was from 1978
additionally, I think that williams/bally has been using register 18 for the maximum no. of credits/free play (when set to zero) on all of their machines since the early '80s
Quoted from Chrisbee:Same question but for Fireball Classic Bally 1984, do I set this machine to 0 credits too?
Bally's with an OEM board and/or OEM ROMs will not do free play.

I would even have been fine if they drilled a hole in the bottom of the cabinet. It's a bit easier to fill in wood holes than steel holes. On top of it, they wired in one of those thumbwheel roller lamp switches on the inside to turn it on and off, it's quite comical.

Funny. Saw a doorbell on the front of a friend's machine once. Laughed my butt off.

For Vally games, and others fro that matter...set the replay at something like 10,000...then you get a credit right away.
