I've been able to do it with my TSPP, but not very consistently. 3/4 of the time I just end up adding a player 2...

I thought it was hold start and hit the right flipper when the ball drains but I haven't been able to get it to work at all tonight?

What's the exact method of doing this?

Hold down start after 2nd or later ball has kicked out

No flipping required

Play game to completion, press start.

F14 restarts by pressing start after the the 2nd ball is in the shooter lane. Before that you add a second player.

This is true of most games that allow a second player to be added during ball 1--games older than that (early 80s) restart on the start button anytime after the first points are scored. Some games will have an anti-little-kids feature so you have to press-and-hold for a second or two to avoid accidental restarts.

Slam tilt, maybe?

Play the first ball well enough that you don't need to start over.

My sentiments exactly. Some of my best scores have come from a quick drain on ball 1.

Hold down the start button anytime after ball two is kicked out.
If it doesn't work, change your settings so it does. You can turn the feature on/off

This.

If the coin door is open, and you are still on Ball 1, hit the Slam Switch.

That's a matter of opinion off course but a reset may come in handy when you find a 4 players game
abandoned on ball one.
This happens a lot in places where the games are on free play and there are a lot of children or unknowing
adults about.
I think in places like that they should always have the reset feature enabled.

Just confirmed that with factory settings my TSPP will allow a restart by hitting the start button after ball 1 (with ball 2 sitting in the lane)

This happens all the time at Game Preserve. I don't like stressing the power supply boards with a power cycle but most of the games have the slam tilt either disabled or set such that triggering it requires more than a hard but non-abusive tap on the coin door. Usually one of the staff members will plunge balls on these games as they walk by, one ball per pass until game over. If I'm playing next to such a game I'll plunge off the balls as time permits, though some games make this unbelievably difficult due to overly generous ball savers (SF2, SMB).
