Could be a rom problem, but usually isn't. Instead, try re-seating the ribbon cable that runs between the CPU board and the sound board. If that is partially bad you'll get incorrect sound calls, and if it goes worse you'll get no sound calls at all.

(Could also be the logic that drives that cable, but try reseating it first. If the reseat works, sometime down the road you may need to replace that cable.)
