nah, Gem shot is just harder than average. I almost always get it every game I play. I plunge to hit Gem, and thats a huge help.

Best thing I ever did was learn how to plunge Gem for the super secret unofficial skill-shot! I can hit it about 60% of the time now and its more valuable to me than the 1mil you get in the arcade scoop.
