it is better to ask what may be a seemingly stupid question than to destroy a machine (best case) or suffer injury/death (worst case)...
what may be "obvious" to one person can be "completely confusing" to another...
iow, the op is right to ask the question, and you denigrating him for doing it was out of line... hence the thumbs down...
