I'll take "Bad Ideas" for $200 please.

That is an early Alltek. They do not have batteries anymore.

Okay, not the best place for a battery pack, but still better than being on the board.

Questionable at best, especially since if it was on the board where the wires attach it would be under most of the critical components instead of above them....and the stupid thing is mounted so that there's NO chance the battery holder itself would catch any possible spew. I'd argue there's actually a LARGER risk of it doing significant damage where it's at!

So when's the last time you saw alkaline cells "Spew"?!? I willing to bet it's pretty rare that any cell or batty does that. My point is that the battery pack is off the board That make it much LESS likely for acid to migrate across the board. The only other problem is if the acid migrates thru the wires. Also, look at the length of the wires from the pack. You don't get many options of where to mount it with wires that are that short unless you're going to modify it. Sounds like you should have an issue with Altek on that one.

Aw come on! It's not like I write answers for Jeopardy for a living ... or MAYBE I Should ...

Yeah, but the battery acid will neutralize the mustard some idiot squirted all over it.

Every time I change a clock battery.

Can not tell if serious or ignorant...

*edit* That's the same in either case, I suppose.

Happens all the time. Noticed that Mata Hari had wonky high scores. Opened her up and...

I deal with this way to much. Off board is better than nothing, but this still is annoying. Cut that corroded crap out and put in a NVRAM at this point. I used to do remote batteries all the time, but i like either coin cell cr2032 or nvram anymore.

Yup I'm not surprised as I see this all the time by previous owners that read on the internet to get the holder off the board but fail to think it through and they mount it in the closest place which is above the board....ugh.
