TLDR: This tutorial is designed to allow you to add a Stern swinging bell to an original ACDC Pro.

Disclaimer: If you scratch your game, not my fault.

*********

At long last! One of the things I missed the most about ACDC Pro was the swinging bell. I searched far and wide to no avail.

Stern eventually released the ACDC Pro LED with a swinging bell. Stern mentioned they might make a kit, but that never happened.

Fast forward over four years since I bought ACDC Pro and Stern released the VE with a swinging bell. I called my distributor using the parts list from the VE manual and ordered everything.

Here’s the list:

1 535-0899-00 FRAME, SWINGING BELL, AC/DC PRO 1
2 530-7880-00 PIVOT SHAFT, SWINGING BELL, AC/DC PRO 1
3 511-7553-00 ASSEMBLY, BELL/SHAFT, AC/DC PRO 1
4 242-5091-00 WASHER, 1/2 X 17/64 X .03 - DT 2
5 270-5002-00 RETAINING RING - 1/4" 2
6 535-0898-00 MTG. BRACKET, SWINGING BELL, AC/DC PRO 1
7 232-5201-00 SCREW, 6-32 X 3/8" PPH MS SEMS 2
8 535-9648-01 BUMPER HOLDER - FASTENED 1
9 237-6197-00 SCREW, 4-40 X 3/16 PFH U/C 18-8 SS 2
10 535-1181-00 PENDULUM LIMITER - SWING BELL 1

Here’s the picture:

First, you take off the plastics to the left and right of the bell. No need to remove the left ramp.

The new bracket has three holes vs two. I did not drill my playfield.

Install the new bracket.

Once the new bracket is in place, reattach the plastics. Then, it’s pretty straightforward. Attach using the screws.

Lessons learned: Make sure all of the screws are loose, then tighten. The bell should not drag or hit the sides. It should be a smooth motion.

Here she is!

So... cost.

All said and done, it was under $200. You could probably save money if you cannibalize parts or fashion your own stuff. Take a look at the list to see what you have or what you need.

I elected to buy everything.

Because this isn’t a kit, I ordered each piece through my distributor. Unfortunately, some of the parts were backordered and I received a wrong part. All told, it took almost two months to get everything.

At the end of the day, adding a swinging bell to your ACDC Pro is achievable. It’s an easy procedure (maybe 20 min), but a little spendy for what you get.

Feel free to swing by any time (pun)

I wish I could give you two upvotes just for the commitment and documentation for all the people who want to try.

Awesome work, the price is a little much for me. I think I’ll stick with after market mod. Stern should have made this as a kit with a discount price years ago. Beautiful machine!

The swinging bell is very cool on the game! Glad you have one now.

#9 6 years ago

Pro with swinging bell and premium lightshow is a VERY solid game.

(Now, if only someone could get drops into TNT)

Do it!!!! You know I’d be an instant buyer

I thought I remembered a thread some years back where a guy built drop TNT targets as a one off. With your superior skills, I’m sure you could do it.

Someone sold a bell mod a few years ago. What did it do?

That was Hemi’s bell mod (I had this mod on my game, pictured above). It was a small ball and pendulum... different than the swinging bell.

Awesome!!!! Thanks so much for coming through

Thanks,
I bought one of those but have never used it. Thought I would own an AC/DC but not going to now ☹️

Wow - I’m just now finding this thread after thinking the whole topic (of Stern actually releasing a kit) to be dead. Truth be told - I had all but given up on it, as so much time had gone by with Stern seemingly ignoring us.

Thank you Mudflaps for sticking with this. I just wish I could have found this earlier so I could have thanked you proper 11 months ago!

Any specific distributor you’d recommend for parts ordering?

Sorry, just saw this. Any distributor will be able to order parts from Stern, no problem.

I know this thread hasn't been bumped for a while, but I figured why not spread a little quarantine cheer, AC/DC style.

I went through a few iterations until I was satisfied with the final configuration.

A couple of notes, based on what I ordered, vs. what I actually wound up using in my last fit and install:

#1 - I wound up installing, and later removing, the "PENDULUM LIMITER - SWING BELL" - 535-1181-00.
Truth be told, I just didn't see the need for it, especially given the Premium/LE's don't have it. When I did have it on, I wound up having to adjust it a few times, and it just felt like it would be more trouble than it was worth long term, especially since it has to be aligned perfectly not to impede bell movement/action.

#2 - The Nyliners... "NYLINER, 1/4" SHAFT, 4L1-FF" - 545-5423-00.
I forgot to put them in my order, didn't realize they were critical to the bell swinging properly and then had to put everything down for a week or so while waiting them out to deliver. Fortunately, you don't need to order them direct from a Stern distributor, as Marco and PBL sells them. I wound up ordering a qty of each size nyliner PBL had just because.

#3 - The mounting bracket "MTG. BRACKET, SWINGING BELL, AC/DC PRO" - 535-0898-00.
I did wind up drilling my playfield for the 3rd mounting screw. The whole bracket felt secure with just 2, but rock-steady with all 3 fasteners in it, and I figured the holes were there for a reason. I don't regret drilling that additional hole one bit.

#4 - Use blue locktite on every screw.

Here's a few pics of my bell after final install, and I'm very satisfied with it.

I now have the bell assembly I've always wanted since day 1... the painted bell and the "BUTYRATE" bell top cover is beautiful and much better than what comes with the stock bell. BTW, that's a Swinks AC/DC Bell block mod (https://www.shapeways.com/product/WHHSDWDQA/ac-dc-quot-timber-grain-quot-bell-block-mod?optionId=57568211&li=shops) that I cut down with a dremel and cleaned with a razor blade and then painted to achieve the proper look.

I think it turned out really nice, even if I do say so myself. I still have a bit of clean-up to do but it's 98% done at this time.

Thank you sir! I thought it ended out well. The shapeways material is really nice/high quality and your design had the look I was going after. Win/Win!

Big thanks to Mudflaps and EightBitWhit for all the info contained in this thread
Took me a while to source the parts and one of them (pivot pin) I could not find anywhere. I got a friend who works at a steel fabricators to make me one.

I give the bell a new coat of spray paint which sort of matches the alternative translite I bought. Made a little wooden cover for the top and got a laser etched Hells Bells stuck on.

I'm really happy how it turned out and just love playing it.

Curious where you got the parts as I can’t seem to find much of any of this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just message stern directly. They will tell you if they have the parts in stock. Then get pinball life to order them and buy from them.
