Greetings fellow pinsiders. Sure this must have been done before but always cool to bring it back. This is Pinside Flippin' Fantastic after all. Put insane sums of money to improove a pin is what we do. Not looking here on hardcore jobs on a pin who took a beating for 30 years and bring it back to life. I'm more into mods like the mini Tron arcade, shoot to thrill cannon for ACDC, the Tesseract lighting up for The Avengers. Mirror blades, Cliffy protectors, super overkill shinny balls they all count.

Don't be shy, let the madness begins.....

My post will follow, just need to find the old calculator first

I spent about $1,250 modding my Tron LE . . . I thought I was crazy . . . then I saw I am actually a little lite on mods compared to the majority of the LE owners and virtually ALL of the pro owners . . .

#3 7 years ago

I think my ACDC will be a decent player but stay close we will have an Overkill Lord of The Pins winner. You can go pretty deep these days with mods.

#4 7 years ago

It's a friendly competition thread but can give people ideas of things they did not know they could get for their machines. Will also maybe brings new contacts or stuff to buy for new members. I know people who take under consideration before a purchase not only if the pin is fun but if there is a lot of mods available. I have to say I love putting mods.

If I were allowed to gamble (job restriction) I would wager $100 that a Tron Pro is going to win this award running away.

TZ and AFM both have a lot of mods (TZ probably has more total mods than Tron by the numbers) . . . but the sheer cost difference in the mods for Tron compared to the other machines has Tron Pro in a different league. Mods for that game are expensive and numerous.

Plus, mods that you can technically do on any machine, such as laser cutting the words Tron and Enron into the legs and body armor, I have seen done on multiple Tron's and literally no other game. That is big time expensive laser cutting work.

I'm not sure if anyone will say exactly what they have spent but I saw a Tron Pro a couple months ago that had to have over 4k in mods to it . . . maybe 5k.

#6 7 years ago

Crazy hehehe, the cost of the pin almost. Tron will indeed be in the finals. I wonder if a TZ with all the possible mods will come in the game. We could also see a regular machine but bling with Chrome or Brass to the max.

Again, I still think a Tron Pro will take it (they chrome those suckers out too). The only way I don't see a Tron Pro taking this, and by a huge margin, is if you are counting the restore cost for HEP's . . . then who knows; I've heard some people have spent 10k on that man's superb master work for their MM's.

I don't think you can count restore costs on your initial criteria though.

My prediction (and I think 3 or 4 Tron Pro's will be 1st but just looking at general game mods):

1) Tron Pro
2) AFM
3) TZ
4) Tron LE
5) MM

I'm not into modding hardcore. TZ was the king machine to pile a bunch of shit into to tack it up. But now it seems on this site, every game can be chalked full of shit. Some more tastefully than others. There is such a thing as overboard on the mods. Some are very good. Some are complete garbage. Minor improvement ones here and there, i'll do and usually do them myself. Don't like to go to ape shit.

I bought a modded Iron Man as loved the look of it and it is a fun and challenging game, then I wondered how much the guy before me must have spent doing the mods. After some research and a few extra small mods I calculated $1970 worth of mods not including any postage / freight and it still is very tasteful and just doesn't have the set of the lit chest figures, backbox chest light mod and the speaker grill inserts. So with everything it would tally up to about $2300.

#10 7 years ago

Here is my research list for IM, prices were current up to about 12 months ago and some items may no longer be available or hard to come by so may even be a bit more. My interpretation of a mod is anything that is different to a standard production machine.

I have listed this info before but with give some guys so ideas.

I'm apparently cheap, or have the wrong pins. I spent about $45 bucks total on my JP, getting a few little dinos, palm trees, and my little goat. For my spiderman project pin, we spent about $200 on the red dmd filter, plastic protectors, Back Alley 'black spiderman' sling/flipper plastics and black pearl web balls, shiney balls (we've got 2 black and 2 super shiney,) cabinet protectors, and new decals. My target decals are in the mail. Most of that was because it was in a fire and needed severe cleaning/fixing, and not so much just added mods for prettiness. I've looked at the Back Alley building mods, but can't justify about $400 for buildings/lights. So I'm going to lose this contest, but I'm really ok with that.

#12 7 years ago

I didn't spent more than $50 bucks on action figures, but I reckon I added at least $500 in value.

Mods don't have to be expensive as long as they are tasteful.

Thats one busy STTNG

I have a few mods on my TZ. Last christmas I saw the topper sign thats comes off an IGT slot machine sell for 1000 dollars on Ebay. I thought of selling mine at that point. My Creech has quite a bit of modding but I have owned it for over 20 years. I try to make the mods myself and spend a lot of time making them. Instead of paying for someone else to make them and paying for their labor can I count my labor. Does that count? I would have a million dollars if that were the case.

Your dreamin I can barely see a thing with all those figures..

I have spent thousands of dollars on mods in last year alone. I am pretty frugal-I only buy mods that I feel are not tacky or add value and make it worth the money. The arcade mod for Tron and Tessaract cube for Avengers were some of the mods that were difficult to justify because of pricing. I want a color DMD for my STTNG and my Wh20 but cannot justify spending $400 for it. The way I see it is that $400 can go towards another title in my collection. I think Coin-Taker LED's are some of the best value mods for machines. The transformation is amazing and usually is less than $100. I also like figurines for some titles. So I guess I draw the line on mods based on pricing and if it will come off as tacky. Here are some of my custom figurine mods-I have not seen done before(:

#20 7 years ago

Two F-14 Tomcat diecast planes added to F-14 Tomcat, about $10.
Police strobes and police car added to High Speed, about $30.
Enhanced lighted submarine added to Bally Atlantis, about $20.

I don't consider replacement of incandescent bulbs with LEDs a mod or upgrade. When it comes down to it, that's just bulb replacement.

#21 7 years ago

Zero, no mods. I like the factory look. I'd rather spend money on machines themselves than useless crap to dress up machines I already own. I have bought replacement plastics, new flipper parts, blubs, anything that makes it look or play more like new. Of course ground mods on Gottliebs, which are mostly free. I do have a Grainger motor in my Black Hole backbox but only because that's the best way to bulletproof the original design.

#22 7 years ago

That was a STTNG? I thought it was a shot of some kids Toybox.

#23 7 years ago
