How is a Bayonet Base 3 terminal wired?

    I don't have one of these out of circuit and it's behaving badly. How are the 3 bases connected internally? I'm referring to one of these

    Are 2 of the bases connected together (internally)? Just puzzled why a 3 base is needed... seems you could do everything with 2 bases. But clearly I'm missing something.

    To light a lamp only 2 leads are needed. When a lamp is CPU controlled in a lamp matrix a diode is needed. Now to keep both ends of the diode secured a third lead is added to the socket that doesn't connect to anything and is just to mount one end of the diode.
