HI,

My Gottlieb System 3 machine doesn't have a functional coin door, I am wondering how hard it is to replace it with a working one? and the cost?

it is a home machine, so being on Free Play isn't a problem, but still I think it would look nicer with a working coin door.

I wish Gottlieb let the programmers fix software/game bugs after a machine was put onto locations, but nope they didn't allow it.. the software it came with was it.. no updates. I know that has nothing to do with a coin door just thought I'd share that tidbit. I heard it from Jon Norris who was a pinball designer for Gottlieb until they closed in '96.

Measure the hole in your cabinet and then measure the hole in a Williams cabinet. You may have to cut your hole bigger.

Pinball Life has new Williams doors for $115.

You might try Pinball Resource if new Gottlieb doors are available.

I will take some photos of it tomorrow

Pinball Resource has international coin doors for the System 3 last time i checked. All others were sold out. I would advise against using a Williams/Bally door only because you may have to hack the wiring up a bit and I don't think the mounts are the same. It can be done, but I'd suggest one made for a system 3.

I had to replace a coin door for my Stargate and wound up using a donor from a parted out Street Fighter found on Mr. Pinball classifieds. I preferred a US coin door so it took a long time to source but it was worth it- The installation was a breeze and kept things to spec.

Neither of my pin's coin doors have the coin mechanisms. Do new coin doors come with these? Can you purchase them seperately? Are they the same for all machines?

Coin Mech's just snap in and out of doors.. If you post up some pictures I can tell you if you door is complete minus mechs or if its missing other hardware.

Cool, I shall do just that when I can find some time.

Yeh let's see pictures of your current door inside and out.

Here are the pictures of my coin door, I believe it is missing the mechanisms that accept quarters. The coin slots it has don't light up either, I guess it is missing the bulbs for that.

If someone could let me know what I need to get the coin door working it would be appreciated

The slam tilt switch works so I would assume the wires are fine.

If more pics are required that can be done too.

Thank You

Well, the coin mechs, and the coin switches are there.

If the bulbs don't light, first troubleshooting step is to replace them, may just be burnt out.

Throw it in switch test mode, and drop a coin through and see if the coin switches register.

Could just be on tournament mode, which I believe Gottliebs require to be 'free play', should be a bracket on the right side of the game inside the coin door, with a switch you use to enable or disable tournament mode.

Thanks for the reply

It seems the coin mechanism is only for $1 coins as the sticker says on the side of it, as quarters just go right to the coin return. I tried adjusting it but to no avail, so I have it set to 4 credits for a dollar, but thinking about getting a different coin mechanism that will accept quarters.

looking at the cost the door is $85 the door I have on it now has a broken lock and missing the proper key, I have 2 for the backboard only.

Quarter mechanism is $18.09. This is now a HUO pinball but originally was a route machine so I am sure it's been abused by people and neglected by OPs.

Also only one mechanism is complete, the other is broken. However, I switched out the bulb and the working coin chute lights up now.

Now I just have to decide is it worth approximately $105 + shipping to get a working and nice looking coin door? hmmm

To replace doors is it just a few bolts that need to be removed to get the door off?

The game has 20 credits now, how do i blank them back to 0?

Just Changed the Coin Mechs, lock and bulbs and save your self a bunch of money.

Looks like you have a wire off of one of the lamp sockets. Also, looking at your coin switches, I see wires off of them too.

You have a Coin Controls door. Happ Controls sells the remaining stock of parts.

Would this work then?

and what lock would I need for my coin door?

Thanks again

The right size cam lock you could get it also from suzo happ or from any locksmith.
As for the coin mechs almost all of them run on +/- 5VDC. Except for the pain in the Azz programable ones.

I would definetly fix this one I don't think it is worth it to replace at this point.

It would be cheaper to pull the cam lock and take it to a locksmith to get rekeyed rather than buying a new one and replacing it.

A coin door lock is about 5 bucks from any number of suppliers. Pinball Life, Marco, BAA, etc.

Ken is correct, there is a wire off the shooter side lamp socket, find out where it went and reconnect it. There are wires hanging by the coin switches as well, figure out if any of them are disconnected and reconnect.

There is about 15 minutes of work here and 10 dollars worth of parts to having the coin door fully functional. If it's scraped up, get a can of krylon and freshen it up. Write yourself a check for $100 to spend on the next pin, because that's what you'll save over buying a new one - and on this title, I can't see you ever recouping $100 in sale price from a new coin door!

Coin mechs in this door are *mechanical*. Coin drops in them, and either gets recognized as genuine and dropped over the coin switch, or gets rejected to the coin return. No 5 volts required, or any other voltage.

Yes that will work, and I'd find a cheaper used one. The posts on the sides of the mech can be moved or removed to suit your needs.

Coin door lock, cabinet lock, lots of things will work. Did you check Pinball Life, Bay Area, etc. for coin door locks ?

Thanks for the info, I think I will replace that cable assembly that goes to the coin door. Also, will get that coin mechanism from that website as PBR told me they don't have one that will accept Canadian quarters, but wouldn't a US quarter mechanism work just the same?

Do I just use force to knock out the old coin door lock?

The wires that are off are one for the light on the right coin slot and another that connects to the bottom of the coin area, if that makes any sense..

No Lock should have a nut on the back and take it out

If a coin mech has a magnet on it, you'll need to remove that for Canadian quarters to work in it.

Thanks a lot I didn't know that about coin mechanisms, saved me some trouble.
I see the nut to remove on the back of the coin door lock now.

Does the coin door need all 3 of the wires connected to it? Referring to the connections below the coin mech that can be seen in picture 2?

Thanks again, I am learning a lot

Look at the wire/stripe colors and see what the manual says they are supposed to do.

It's possible that GTB used the same harness for all doors, and the unused wire is for a 3rd coin switch that isn't used in the door on your game. I don't know GTB well enough.
