I'm doing my first playfield swap on a 1986 Williams High Speed.

I didn't like disconnecting wires that were soldered directly to the exterior of hex screws.

What are some workarounds for this that are cleaner?

I'll soon be re-attaching the wiring harness, and I'd sure like to avoid soldering directly to the outside of hex screws.

I came up with a DIY solution, but I wanted to hear from some experts before I proceed.

    thanks!

Sand a bit of the mounting tab a little away from the screw. Flux it and solder to that area. Someone probably has a smarter idea.

Wire terminals, like those use used on EMs.

This seems far too easy. Why didn't games ship with wire terminals installed?

Something like this looks good for #6 screws?

Wrap the wire around the screw and tighten it down. That's how electrical outlets are wired.

Houses don't vibrate like pinball machines. I'd solder it to a lug and then attach that to the screw.

    They do in California

My guess is cost. Eliminate one whole part and its cost. I would look for a solder terminal, not a crimp one.

Like this, but the right size.

Hey mof. I'd go with btw75's suggestion. Personally I like the ones that also serve as lock washers (just an example, may not be exactly what you need).

Yes, more similar to the ones Gottlieb used for EMs.

Here's the solution I went with before posting this thread... it turns out I was on the right track. Next PF swap, I'll surely buy a solution. For this one, I'll use these DIY gizmos. This way, I can upgrade a few lamp sockets when I get new ones, and I won't have any problems unscrewing the hex heads.

good deal with the lugs, even home made ones. as far as I know solder doesnt really stick all that well to hard steel anyway, not that I havent joined bicycle cables soldering building a couple tandems.
wrapping (twisted) wire around a larger screw into a hook shape soldering it solid (tinning) can put a nice lug at a wire's end too.
