I've been to 2 pinball expo's (so not nearly enough to be very knowledgable) and I've had a close eye on the tournament games they used for the big dogs of the pinball world. To me, the games seemed to be games that were fairly common. It seems there's a game from each decade of pinball with the newer games being pretty popular games. Do they choose randomly for the tourney's? Or do they just look at the all the machines at the expo's and pick the ones in the best shape? I think it would be much more impressive to have people playing games they're not familiar with rather then games they've played many times before so that it comes down to true pinball skill. I'm really great at my Genesis machine but that's because most of the shots have become a muscle memory-typed situation since I've played it a lot. Of course you're going to be better on the games you own or have played for hours and hours.

I'd like to see a tournament with 5 or 6 of the hardest machines out there.

And if the games are chosen randomly then I guess that makes me appreciate the players abilities all the more. Just curious though.

Not chosen randomly and not chosen based on condition. Many fun games don't do well in tournaments. JY is a great game to play on location, but it's a horrible game for a tournament. Not matter how nice it is. The best tournament strategy for the game is to play video modes over and over. Not a very exciting way to run a tournament. Other games, like LOTR and Spidey, have too long of ball times to work in a tournament. You can bastardize the game to shorten ball times, but the game isn't as fun that way. Other games have characteristics that don't lend themselves well to tournaments. Some games allow players to 'steal' other players locked balls (good qualifying game, bad playoff game). Some games have rapes that make them too one dimensional (see JY video mode above). Some games have buildable hard to collect jackpots that makes the game unbalanced.

The PAPA folks generally do a good job of picking games. Click on the link below to see the games used in the past. Note that playoff games are different than qualifying games.
