My understanding of electromagnets is simplistic... On/off , pickup paper clips in grade school. So, I get how they can be used to catch a pinball. But how does the throwing action work?

My understanding of electromagnets is simplistic... On/off , pickup paper clips in grade school. So, I get how they can be used to catch a pinball. But how does the throwing action work?
I figured there must of been more to it. When I had xmen , wolverine would sometimes make the phoenix shot .. Which requires lots of force, up hill. I guess I was not paying attention to the side to side (building momentum) action the ball did before it was let go.
It amazes me you can get somewhat repeatable behavior from this
