Hi Guys:
I have a couple of tightly wound stainless steel springs that are very dull and I would like to polish them to a high shine. Being that they are coiled springs, rather than a flat piece of metal, they would be difficult to use a buffer on as it would be difficult to get into the crevices, etc.
Is there some kind of liquid that I could drop them in (maybe bleach or acid??) that would bring them up like new or can you suggest another method?? The springs are over 50 years old and are used on a vertical 'piano' hinge, to keep a door closed. They are on a restored soda machine and due to internal damage on the hinge pin, they can not be removed from the hinge, so replacing them with new springs is not an option. If there is a liquid I should use, I can remove the whole 'piano' hinge (with the springs attached) and soak the whole thing. I can always repaint the white section later.
The springs are approximately 4 inches long by only 1/2 inch wide. I'm attaching a picture.
If one of you restorers or handy guys can give me suggestions on this, I would be grateful.
Thanks so much.
Roger
