It's literally not even covered in the news. I wasn't aware we hadn't made it to the World Cup until I saw this post.

Even if we were to win the whole thing, I think it would have a lower viewing rate than the worst of any of our professional sports, and maybe 10% of the population would even be aware...

    I'll just leave this here...

    Quoted from gweempose:

I bet most people in our country couldn't even name three professional soccer players.

All I can come up with is Pele and that guy who is married to the Spice Girl.

    Quoted from fosaisu:

But I'm guessing few sports can rival the NFL with near 100% CTE rates for former players.

Weight has a lot to do with that too. Soccer players are tiny ~150 lbs on average (https://www.livestrong.com/article/492686-the-average-height-of-a-female-soccer-forward/) compared to football, where the average NFL player is 246lbs and more than 20% of them are over 300lbs (https://www.sportingcharts.com/articles/nfl/top-5-heaviest-players-in-the-nfl.aspx). Add in the impacts in football, and it's pretty easy to see why CTE is near universal.

As far as the question of how to add excitement and scoring to soccer- cut the size of the field dramatically... make it 1/2 the size or less, and it will create some action.
