Finally had a few minutes to pop the MPU out of my Xenon. I saw some acid damage to it before and needed to do a full inspection. All I can say is WOW. I know that battery acid can walk up boards, but I literally think it walked up all 4 sides of the MPU.
The amazing thing is that before I pulled it the voltages all looked decent on it and it almost booted fully (6 flashes instead of 7)
As I took it out, the board was actually flaking apart in my hands.

Since there is plenty of experience here with this, and this is my first encounter with it, I will ask you...

Is this one savable?

Contact Tom Callahan at www.pin-logic.com He will tell you if it is salvageable or not. He has saved all but one of my acid covered boards. The big thing seems to be if the corrosion gets in and under certain chips. I think he charges $75 or so to bead-blast clean and refurb an MPU with upgraded parts. A lot cheaper than $200. He stands by his work. Quick turnaround too. I highly recommend him.

Great, I will try Tom first! I would prefer original..Alltek is nice, but there is something to be said for original

I would agree if it were a gameplay item, like a flipper coil or something. But the board is unseen and the behavior is the same, right? Modern PCB manufacture is much more durable than the stuff made 30+ years ago.

One time @ Lollapolooza....

Oh, wrong thread.

actually thats not bad at all. I have only seen a couple that were perfect. I've also seen some that were ravaged and still worked fine. Replace the battery, power it up on a bench power supply and see if that LED flashes 7 times (or whatever the count is MINUS 1). It wont flash the last one unless you connect the high voltage when testing. Soak the area in some white vinegar and clean with isoprop and dry. it'll be fine

I have used Tom for this very reason. Not only does he do GREAT work but a super nice guy with fast turn around. GL

I need to get the old white battery off my Future Spa...do i just cut it off by the end wires? then what? how do i replace the battery with something that won't leak? Or if this isn't possible, where do I buy replacement battery and how do i replace it?

Thanks! Nelson

Thanks you all..I sent Tom a note to see. It looks like the battery itself is decent...almost like someone saw the acid, swapped the battery, and left the damage to fend for itself!

I guess I have more $$ than brains. When I have a corroded MPU or bad rectifier, I almost always buy new boards - especially if it's a game I want to keep in my collection for a while. I'm always worried that, even if the board is repaired, in a few months, another 30 year old component is going to fail.

Yep, cut it off. Get a remote battery holder from Radio Shack or something, clean up the holes and area where the old battery was mounted, solder in new holder with long leads so you can mount the battery holder in the bottom of the backbox.
How was that? Make sense? Now go...complete your mission...and good luck.

That doesn't look too bad as bally MPUs go. Should clean up.

Tom is a good resource.
