A few weeks ago, I played Houdini in a bar with loud music. I couldn't hear any of the speech or callouts, nor did I know the rules, so the pin didn't do much for me. I really didn't love it. However, the art, theme, and toys are among the best out there, if not THE best.
I couldn't get it out of my mind how attractive this game was, so I bit the bullet and bought one. Wow, am I glad I did! I don't know where AP got the voice actors but, oh boy, it could not be done any better! As for build quality, I see it right up there with Jersey Jack and that is a big compliment to AP.
As for difficult shots, sure the odd one, maybe. I am not a great player but I really don't find the shots too difficult. If anything, it makes me a better player. As for a little 'stop & go', I really don't mind that and when it stops to tell you what your next move should be, just press both flippers and the ball is immediately released back on the playfield.
Houdini is sooo much value, especially with it's beautiful dark bronze trim, which would have been LE pricing from any other manufacturer. The artwork on the backglass, cabinet and playfield is perfection and, as for that shot from the milk can to the chest, it could not have been executed better. I really like the size and placement of the screen, which leaves lots of room for artwork. The addition of the smaller screen on the playfield is a very nice touch, also.
It's true that I am still in the honeymoon phase but I don't remember ever being drawn to a pin as much as this one draws me in and, believe me, I have owned more pins than I care to remember.
I find that every game is different on Houdini and a big kudos to American Pinball. They deserve every success.
