I believe these did work before I did the Mosfets & replaced the resisters with 0 ohm jumpers on the driver board per Vids Guide. Can this be the issue? Can those Mosfets be bad or can it be something else? How can I check those Mosfets? The bulbs & sockets are good & it does score correctly.

If a FET was bad then an entire row or column would be out. It’s more likely that the socket, wires, diode, or bulb itself is the culprit.

The bulbs & socket are definitely good, if a diode is bad, the light should work by just sniping if of right?

No sir. That diode is an isolation diode. The lamp matrix depends on that diode not only to isolate the lamp within the rest of the lamp matrix but also to provide power to the lamp.

If the diode is open then the lamp will never light.

OK, I'll check them & replace if needed.

So after some more investigating, it is one row of lights out. The 1000, 9000, Hot Tip 100, Right Special & Credits, this is the Credits light under the card tray. These lights use pin 1 on 2J5 Yellow Violet wire & pin 8 on 2J7 Red Gray wire. Pin 1 on 2J5 goes to Mosfet Q63, so I'm thinking this bad. Anyway to test in circuit or should I just replace it?

#8 4 years ago

I think I'm wrong on the Q63 Mosfet because all those lights use a different pin on 2J5, so it must be Q61 that goes to 2J7 Red Gray wire. Its a 2N6122 NPN Power Transistor. Wondering what you guys think, is that the problem? How can I test this?

#9 4 years ago

Wrong again, it's Q59 driving row 8. Should I replace with the same 2N6122 or is there something better?

Have you diode tested the part comparing results to other identical parts?

You can use a TIP-41C instead of the part you mentioned.

Yes, I get a short on the suspect part, different from the rest.
I don't have any replacement parts for this, I will need to order.

In Vid's Guide to Bulletproofing Williams System 3-7 post#33, there is a reference to replacing Tip 41's with Mosfets, do you know if those would work for the 2N6122's?

It will, but you'd need to replace all 8 of them, plus the required voltage divider resistors.
It's a nice mod...but IMHO, not mandatory.

OK, thanks, I'll think about what I'll do. It will be an expensive part with the shipping for just 1 item.

OK, so I replaced the transistor Q59 but still have the same issue, row 8 lights out. The transistor that was there was definitely bad.
Any ideas what to check next?
