Loved following the restoration. I am working on one for a friend and have two questions:

When putting back the swirl left ramp and the rufio ramps, I noticed a metal standoff almost right between where the ramps cross over top of each other that has a screw hole in the top but doesnt line up with anything to attach. Wondering if anyone has a closeup of that area and what goes there?

Secondly, his game where the shooter lane plastic attaches to the standoff right above and right of the diverter is cracked and seems very high. I am wondering if someone put the wrong height standoff here? When attached the multiball plastic ribs the glass. I am thinking it needs a lower standoff with washer and screw. If someone can measure or shoot me a pic of their standoff. In his game it creates a hump here and its not flat.

Thanks

Cool mod, could you look at your playfield and take a pic of the right skill shot ramp where its screwed to the standoff? See my question above as I am trying to put my playfield back together? Also underneath the swirl ramp on the back right side I have a standoff that I cant find what screws to it. Pics would be great.

How often do you get rejects on your clock shop VUK? Right now if it rattles a bit before it goes in it stays in but I’m getting almost 100% rejects if its a straight hard shot.
Today while playing I’m over 300 million and I have the right ramp built up for 15 million a shot, Bangarang is lit and the lock for multiball is lit. I’m in the perfect situation to finally break 500 million, I’ve had multiple games in the high 400s but just can’t crack 500. So.... shot one goes straight into the clock shop and it rejects sdtm, I have to use a tilt warning to save it. Shot two, same thing! Now I’ve used up my tilt warnings. Shot three, I couldn’t believe it, perfect shot it rejects a third time in a row sdtm and I try just a super soft nudge to save it and I tilt game over! So frustrating!

Edit- played around with some self adhesive window foam to back the metal plate behind the VUK. A piece as big as the ball created 100% rejects regardless of the speed. A thinner piece about half the width of the ball placed at the bottom seems to have greatly improved it. I would put it at 75% of hard shots are sticking now. Much less frustrating.

Is anyone’s rope lights on during attract mode? I thought mine were but I was having an issue with a connector and my upper GI was out. Fixed now so upper GI is on but I could have sworn the rope lights were on during attract mode and now they are not. They work fine during the game. Maybe I am just not remembering it correctly?

My Hook has been in parts for over a year and I am now putting it back together. Can someone tell me where these two springs go? I can't remember and don't see them in the pics I took.

Does anyone know if Stern mirror blades will fit the Hook cabinet properly? The reason I am asking is a new pair is available to me locally.

#2067 3 years ago

Hey Everyone! I bought my Hook from a fellow Pinsider about 3 years ago and somehow missed the boat on the club! My family had Hook when I was in high school and I played a ton of games over the years until it was sold. My new machine is in amazing condition with many upgrades (LEDs, new Rufio ramp, new DMD, NVRAM). I'll be installing 5.01 in a week or so, as well.

The are a couple issues that I could use some help with:

1) The Rufio Ramp - The ball almost never makes it all the way up the ramp (maybe 5% of the time). It only goes all the way around if I hit on a fast rebound.
I remember spamming this with our old machine and now it's largely ignored. I've experimented with the angle anywhere from 5.5 to over 6.5 and doesn't make much of a difference. The flippers seem fine and I had one of our local experts inspect them when I was fixing something else and no observed issues. I'm putting on super bands and will do a deep cleaning soon. This is one of the ramps produced a fellow Pinsider and it looks to be of top notch quality.

2) The VUK - I also remember hitting this consistently, but it seems like on mine the ball bounces way too much (maybe 50% of the time). Has anyone observed this? I'm playing on a steeper angle right now (~6.7), but the game seems a little too fast.

I've read through all 42 pages before posting to make sure my issues weren't covered/resolved already. Thanks in advance!

Finally got around to lighting up the skull hole. Pics don't necessarily do it justice, but it looks great in person. Thought I would post in case anyone else has been thinking about it. Been meaning to do this for a few years now.

That's a good idea. I also have two flex yellows shinning in the right side scoop, but it's only so-so. Maybe blue is the right way to go over there.

Does someone have a good shot of the right ball launch plastic especially where it attaches to the post- mine is cracked and strained there and I wonder if the post is the incorrect length as it makes the ramp sit up to high and someone broke the free ball plastic

Hello friends ... I fixed my sound board problems and put the updated ChadH code.
I have to configure something ? I think with the old code was more attractive. Is it possible ? Sound theme I mean. Or maybe I have to configure something else ?
Can you help me ?

Anyone in the market for a hook PF? I've had this in the closet for years. The skull hole does show some wear but overall I think it would clean up decently.

Gonna post to ebay in he next few days if there is no interest here.

Late but: are you *sure* the flippers are fine? I had the same issue with my right ramp until I rebuilt the flippers, and especially got the correct type of flipper coil on both sides. My Hook came with different coils left and right, and none of them were "correct", i.e. they were too weak for a proper ramp shot. The correct coils are of type 090-5020-30.

Question: how the hell do you hit the right scoop correctly? I've been playing my Hook for one year now and I have a hard time getting the ball into that scoop. I know it's a tricky shot but it happens very often that my angle seems right, but the ball bounces off the inside wall of the scoop or the laneguide next to it. Is there something I can adjust; maybe bend the scoop metal a bit? Any advice from y'all Hook players?

Your DMD is likely outgassed and must be replaced. Heres a great option I've run 24/7 on route with zero problems:

I have the same problem. Granted, I suck, but dear lord, seems like I can never get it in the hole when I'm trying. I'm tempted to just bore the scoop hole out so it's as big as a softball! =p

Getting a lot of crackling and sound fading in and out. Turning the pot all the way down does not completely turn off the sound. Cleaned the pot with electronics cleaner that I have successfully used in the past on other games and it did not help. I had some crackling maybe a year ago and floating the sound board stopped it. I had read about floating the sound board in one of the speaker noise threads. None of the caps on the sound board are bulging or look damaged at all. Thoughts?

Does the crackling only happen when shooting the Windcoaster ramp when the Windcoaster rope light flashes?

Hello all, thought I would jump on on this thread, I have a hook that I am currently in the process of restoring. Everyones hooks on here look great. Can't wait to finish mine.
Does anyone here do reprints of any of the reversed stickers (Ones that go on the ramps etc?)
Picture of my NOS playfield, used the old PF as a template though I still have to figure out the best way to drill the holes that don't go all the way through..

TIA

Hi, has anyone ever thought of, or has done a 3D printed skull replacing the existing one in the centre? I think the original one looks quite fugly. Could really add some amazing modernisation to the pin.

Quoted from s000m:

I'm hoping someone artistic and capable will fall in love with the machine, otherwise my 5 year plan is to teach myself how to do 3d drawings for 3d printing.

Here's the stuff I think would be phenomenal:

1. Redo the pirate ship so I looks like the ship ( I have the design in my head based off the artworkfrom the licensed movie artwork)
2. Croc time - sign should be replaced with a 3d sculpted clock (just like the artwork by the start button)
3. I think the pop bumper tree artwork could be done cool, sort of like how DE jurassic park owners have done some wonders with greenery
4. I would love to do something with pan's sword, either under the glass or do the shooter rod as pan's sword handle (just think it might be weird if the plunger sticks out too far)
4. The artwork with the designers being drawn as lost boys is prime real-estate to do something really cool there

I have a few other ideas I still need to flesh out, but man, love the game. If anyone still has to do it, get Chad's new code and a Pinsound board. Changes everything. Seriously. Pinsound. Chad's code. Get it.

So I was super busy with work and then went on vacation so didn’t have time to troubleshoot. Played a game tonight, everything worked fine until the game was over then some crackling and popping during the attract sounds. Played again and mostly no problems. I’m not very familiar with sound problems, even though the caps look fine, would this be a situation where I should recap the sound board?

Well I'm part of the hook club! This past Sunday was offered a price on a hook I couldn't pass up. With how expensive pins are right now, it was priced just right!

It has some lower GI problems with the lights and whoever owned it before me did some custom mods with a camera in the head (more to come later) so I'm going to be on the hunt for a new light backboard sometime soon. Know of anyone that has one?

Other than those 2 things, the side art is in excellent condition and the playfield wear is pretty minimal. Plays 100% and is a great pin to play and to add to the collection.

I have made some progress on my hook rebuild. (This is my first attempt at restoring a Pinball).
I drew up the chute in solid works so I could replace my damaged one (pic attached). I can not wait to get this finished so I can play it!
Oh I also made some shims for my GI sockets as the new ones I am putting in are slightly longer than the original and I wanted to try and keep it flush with the playfield. Happy to share the STL if anyone is interested.

Nice looking Hook!
Get chads new roms for it ASAP, the changes he made really bring this game to a whole new level. The risk reward using the drop targets to build the ramp value and have it time out if you don’t hit more are great. He tweaked the awards from the scoop to make them a worthwhile scoring strategy. This game was spam the wind coaster ramp all day to several varied strategies.

I will have to figure out how to get that on there. I've never done a rom upgrade so this is definitely new on my end.

I know a lot of people hate on the simplicity of this table but the sounds like a worthwhile upgrade that will give it a little more depth. Any recommended links for how to get this done or where to simply buy and already upgraded chip? I see sites that list both the ROM by itself as well as a CPU/Display set, curious if you can advise which one I'm after.

Machine is in impeccable condition for the most part. I was shocked to see such a clean one. I was even more shocked when he showed me he even had the topper for it, though I need to get screws to connect that.
