Finally got the bracket put in for under the skill shot to keep the ball from rolling back under. Played one game to test it out and it went extremly well. First time i got my intials on that #1 spot. 400 mil is tough to break.

Just did a flipper rebuild kit. Are the flippers supposed to have the tip in line with the hole in the playfield? That’s how they were before and the cradle always felt shallow. The new kit aligns the same way, so the parts are correct and it’s still pretty shallow. If that the way it is, cool, but if not then I’d like to make it proper.

Ok. The Addam’s and NBA FB at the local place are a little shallow and I’ve heard they did that around that time, so I’m going with it being normal.

Regrettably, I sold my beautiful Hook. BUT... now I need to work on one that's having some issues. The game is apparently stopping playing the music randomly and will only play sound effects until another song starts. It will reset during multiball or possibly just periods with a lot of activity. I'm suspicious of 5v, anything else stand out I should be looking at? I know it has older code on it but I doubt anything this unstable was ever code related. Going to look at it later this week.

I mean you did help find the display glitch and get that fixed...so get to it lol

Is it actually playing the startup sound? Or just losing the music?
It could be voltage dropping to the sound board, possibly when something else is happening that draws more power, bad roms, or roms that just need to be reseated. Assuming it's not a more complicated board issue

Basically the CPU is calling sounds from an address in the sound roms, and telling it how long to play them for, which sound has priority, or when to stop on command, like if a mode or song changes, or another target is hit.
The sound/voice effects are just being called before more music starts and/or played overtop of the music. So once it loses data or can't find what it's playing for whatever reason, you get silence until another sound is called. It's not constantly playing it and retrying the whole time, for lack of a better way to put it.

If you hear the startup phrase mixed in...the sound board is actually rebooting.

It starts with the sound working perfectly, then at random times the music stops, only restarting when the song would change (ball lost, start of crock time, etc). Dont think it does "hook, hook, HOOK" but i'm not sure. That's something interesting to look into. Obviously the bigger issue is the game resetting but I'm sure they're probably related. I was thinking verify voltage first then check elsewhere. Hopefully it doesn't have acid damage .

Hey everyone just picked up a hook yesterday and got it home and setup. Game plays fast and has a amazing light show everyone in the family enjoys it! I want to do a few things with it and was wondering what LED flippers can be ordered for this machine? Thanks for your time.

The sound is resetting and starting with hook hook hook. The game seems to reset when multiball is going and you start crock clock and hit a jackpot. The 12v line is at 9.8 or so, I'm going to start there.

Are you using an original or aftermarket power supply? If aftermarket, what brand?

It had older code on it, updated it to ChadH just to be sure and the problem persisted. I ran out of time to troubleshoot it on site but I've got some parts en route for the 12v.

I think I had a similar issue just last night and it sounds to me like it was kinda the same thing. Mulitball started and all the music went off. everything was working mechanically so I thought maybe something was wrong with the code. I just got the machines home early that day so I went through the machine and ensured all the connectors were seated pulled the batteries out havnt had a issue with it yet. But this morning another issue sprung up whe its saying a ball is missing which its not missing any so now I have to figure out whats going on there. If I have the same issue that you have I will try to get a video of it.

congratulations on your new hook, not sure what you mean by led flippers but I have seen lighted flipper buttons at pinball life . looks like you may have room for a few more machines down the road!!

pinballJJ sorry yes i mean i want to add LED flipper buttons to my machine. I really think this is a underrated game! Im military when i had to sell my house to move to a different state i sold off my collection now i am starting all over again. If i could find a 2k less Twister id be in heaven right now!

Just replaced the power board and the 12v is back in spec. Upon inspection the C2 cap was leaky so I might be able to salvage this board.

I tore our game down and shopped it again. It’s been almost 5 years since I did it in 2014. It’s back on location today to make money and entertain! It also has Chad’s most recent 5.01 software.

I just dropped off a Hook to a new location this past weekend. It's a donut shop in front and a bar/small concert venue in the back. He asked about Addams Family and T2, neither of which I have. He said something from that era would be cool since TAF and T2 are at a place literally across the street. When I bought Hook we played a few games as I pointed out a few of the features and he was pretty excited. I have no idea if this location will be a good spot for a game or not, but am always happy to get asked for games.

Hey all, going to look at a hook machine tomorrow. Seller is asking 2k. Is that high? That said I’m seeing the code created by chad mentioned everywhere but is there a post to see how to do it? The process would probably influence my decision to purchase or not. Thanks!

Edit: also if anyone knows of common issues on hook I should keep an eye out for. Seems like dmds are hard to come by.

2k is a fair price if it's nice. If it's beat I don't think I would go that high. I'm thinking about listing mine in the future at 2k and it's pretty nice.

Yes Chad V5 code is a must the gameplay is night and day, it says V5 on the DMD at boot. No biggy if not, just get CPU and Display Roms to swap over, someone was selling them on here at little money (and importantly donate to Chad via his site http://www.pinballcode.com/, he works the miracles!)

128x16 DMD availability used to be a problem, now can get LED replacements and multi-colour options coming along too. Saying that a "nice" machine should have a clear, bright, no lines out DMD.

My specific checks would be wear on the two holes (cliffys available), cracked ramps; Windcoaster unobtanium, Rufio (top right) freeplay40 has done an upgraded replacement. It's a DE so burnt connectors on Power Supply board but I guess you'll do the basics.

I hope it works out, Hook is an underrated machine imo.

The game made $11 from Monday to Saturday, totaling $15 through the weekend. But this was a slow week due to people traveling for Easter.

Hmm. Hook stopped starting a game with credits on the counter, but registers the start button flawlessly in switch test mode. Running the pinballcode.com ROM if that matters.

Ball missing? Check the trough switches in test mode.

Balls were in there when I tried to start a real game, but I took them out in switch test to make sure only the start button was activating. I will test trough switches, but I just got back from that location.

We don’t keep weekly per game totals. But I would say below average.

Update on the start button issue. I’m out of town and a friend held a tournament at my location. I don’t know how frequent it was working, but it was working. Due to the test mode testing if the start button I want to say that it’s fully functional. Based on some feedback, it’s starting to seem like it have a flaky trough switch. The start button switch was replaced no more than a year ago when this issue came up for the first time. Going to replace trough switches and see what happens.

I've been tinkering with the PinballSP Magic editor to colourise the Hook DMD - in anticipation for his release of the 128x16 colour DMD (to replace my original broken one!) I thought I'd share some progress here - the gifs seem to look better if you click on them.

Hook actually only uses 3 (of 4) brightness levels (off, dim, bright) so just mapping those to new colours isn't very interesting. I'm separating out the animations, each with it's own pallet and painting a custom colour to discrete items within them, it is then a straightforward job to change the colour of an item e.g. to change the Shooter knob in the Skill shot animation from blue to something else.

This way people with good colour taste and art skill can make them better still.
