I know exactly what you mean and no matter how many times you try to explain how to play they revert back to the button mashing it is unavoidable. I just make a mental note to order a few more flipper rebuilds. There is only one small boy that actually listened and started to play some pinball when he did I was shocked and proud at the same time.
