Alright...need some system 80b Genesis help! Game at power up would light up some inserts and lock on the motor and no DMD.

What I have done so far:
Verified ps stays good at 5v
Reflowed PS
Ground mods to cpu, ps, sound, and cabinet
Added additional pins to interconnect harness

Still same results

Had a friend bring over a working 80b CPU and she fired right up but with no sound. Was able to test my interconnect harness and roms and all seemed good. I have a replacement 80b cpu shipping to me but still would like to figure out the issue with the current one and still need to figure out the sound! Any ideas??

Quoted from myork82:

On the Gold Wings I had the sound would quit working from time to time. It was the connector that supplies 5 volts at the power supply to the soundboard. You could tell the connector had heat damage at that pin and the pin clearly didn't have any spring tension compared to the others.
Your non booting issue sounds like a carbon copy of the one I had with broken solder joints on the cpu daughterboard. Power the game on and tap the daughterboard and see if the game boots. I know that sounds random but mine would boot sometimes if I tapped the daughterboard. I desoldered the daughterboard, reflowed solder, and it worked perfect afterwards.

I forgot to mention I tried this and even removed and reflowed everything on the daughter board.

I will check more on the ps and sound issue.

Today my replacement board should be here so exciting to start digging into everything else

Anyone have a system 80B that is interested in working on my CPU and Sound board? all wiring mods have been completed and ground mods and game has been tested and works with a working sound and cpu board which seems to point all the figures at the boards themselves. Anyone interested in working on these for me?

Quoted from Fretto1:

Yes I got a great idea; your driver board has some serious issues.
No sound? Check Z13 (7404).
It controls all the sound lines.

Also tried a fully working driver board and still had no sound. Put my non working sound board in a fully working machine and didn't get sound. Pretty sure it's the sound board

Last issue with my Genesis and looking for direction.

Everything works great, ground mods completed and everything.

Issue: when either of the kickback targets are hit I lose sound. Doesn’t come back until another target gets hit. Any ideas?

#1759 6 years ago
Quoted from CactusJack:

Do the kickback targets have good diodes across the coils? Back EMF can send some nasty voltage spikes down the wiring. Since on Gottlieb games of that era, the Pops, Slings, and kicking targets are self controlled (leaf switch actually passes the voltage to the coil) there is no Semiconductor to short out and die telling you there is a diode problem.
Otherwise, the Kicking target should have a switch that armature hits when it goes to end of travel. This is the "scoring" switch that goes back to the CPU. Hand activate the switch and see if the sound turns off because you are hitting the switch and not energizing the coil.

Just getting a chance to work on this. Turns out it is the switch that causes it to kill the background sound. Any ideas where I should start?

#1761 6 years ago
Quoted from CactusJack:

If just closing the scoring switch causes the sounds to stop (no coils energizing), I would suspect a sound board issue. Possibly a bad sound rom (is causing to call a sound routine that doesn't exist). Also possible is sound output drivers from the MPU if other sounds appear to be the wrong sounds.
Tough to troubleshoot without having another game to swap parts with.

I have another genesis at my shop I grabbed the sound board from. That machine boots but hasn’t been touched/tested but figure it was worth a shot. Using that sound board it doesn’t kill out background sound however no longer get all the other switch sounds. Tried switching roms between the two boards and never was able to get fully working. In fact it seems the best I had for correct working sounds was original board. So frustrating!

Finally trying to fix my Genesis sound issue and hoping for help.

Just tested in a fully working genesis and definitely something on the sound board. Sound board hasn’t new roms as fyi

The sounds are out of order, faster pace than normal and a few targets actually kill all sound together. Hit a different target and sound will come back but still not correct sounds.

Any ideas before I send it off to Clive?
