Hey everyone, new to this club with a recent Gold Wings purchase. Cleaned it up this week and was playing the hell out of it tonight, then this trough coil locked up. Looking through the manual, I’m not sure what this is called specifically or where it’s located on the schematics. Initial thought is the transistor went out.
Anyone know what this is officially called so I can find it in the schematics and try to find the transistor to test?

Quoted from Inkochnito:

That would be the ball release.
Check the transistor under the playfield.
Also check the pull-up resistor.
Otherwise is could be L12 (Q13) on the driver board.[quoted image]

I think this is the transistor you’re referring to. I tested it a few different ways and only get a reading when the positive is on the emitter. I feel like I should be getting a read with the negative lead from the meter on the casing and the positive lead on the pins but I’m probably wrong.

I just realized I was testing it backwards. In the pic I’m testing PNP. This is NPN.

I’m so used to Bally this Gottlieb has me mixed up. Im getting 620-640 readings both ways. I’m assuming this transistor is fine.

#2684 5 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Did you see if the coil is getting power? If not it's probably the fuse under the playfield. There should be a fuse that protects that coil and 1 other coil. Gottliebs have a crap ton of fuses.

It locks on. Fuses are good. Under playfield transistor and Q13 on board test fine. I took the board out and reflowed the solder on the transistor just to be sure there wasn’t any cracks after they tested ok. I’m guessing there’s a short somewhere??? Still trying to find the resistor mentioned earlier.

Tried manually grounding transistors. No changes.

EDIT: I pulled the board again to test the resistors and tried Q13 again. I’m getting readings at 900 on both E and C. Looks like I found the problem. Thanks guys

#2685 5 years ago

ok searching online for NPN 40v 2amp transistors and getting some crazy results... seems like this transistor isnt as popular as others and the prices are all over the place. Where are you guys finding this particular one for MPS-U45? Any compatible replacements?

#2688 5 years ago

I noticed the knocker is missing it’s fuse on this Gold Wings. I’m still learning how to read schematics, could someone confirm if I traced the knocker to a 8amp fuse?

#2690 5 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

That fuse covers the 24v dc for all of the coils. There's a box at the bottom underneath the fuse you circled that outlines what all the fuses are in the bottom of the cabinet.

I was looking at that but still couldn’t determine what size fuse it’s takes from what’s listed.

That being said I’m not recognizing how that indicates it’s the fuse for all coils. I’m trying to make sense of what I’m seeing here but it’s not clicking.

#2692 5 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Ah ok yeah it requires an 8 amp slow blow. I'm going by what the box says since it says "solenoids +24vdc" that means that it's for all the coils. That fuse goes to the bridge just to the right of it to generate the 24vdc and it appears it also connects in parallel to send 27vac to the playfield for some reason.

Ok so it does take an 8 amp fuse, perfect thanks! but how I traced it wasn’t correct. I noticed the line from the knocker goes to the bridge but that was the only fuse connected to something the wire from the knocker had. Is it me or is there not a fuse drawn for the knocker?
I guess this is where I get so discouraged by these things.

When turning on Gold Wings, I usually see all the flasher bulbs turn on, hear the fan in the siren for a split second, then some kind of beep boop noise from a board, then it goes into attract mode. Every once in a while Ill turn it on and the flashers stay lit and the siren starts going and it just stays like that, doesn't finishing booting so I turn it off and back on again a few times then it boots. I thought reseating the PROM 1 and PROM 2 on the MPU might help but it still intermittently does this. Also every once in a while mid game itll reboot, only has happened twice. But rebooting 2 times in 10 days seems like enough to be considered a problem.

Any other chips I should reseat or any connectors I should consider looking at in the back box?

#2703 5 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Have you done the ground mods? If not you should do those. Otherwise I'd start by checking your 5 volts from the small power board that has the giant heatsink on it. Disconnect the bottom connector and check the voltage on the board. What is that at? Should be slightly above 5v without any load. Then check the voltage again with everything plugged back in. What's the voltage at now on the 5v power supply? Lastly what's the voltage at on the CPU board at the capacitor. This needs to be at pretty much exactly 5v. If it isn't adjust the voltage using the pot on the 5v power supply.
If after all that you're still having problems you may need to replace the capacitors. As a general reminder when plugging and unplugging things make sure you power the game off first. Don't ever do it while the game is on.

Thanks for the list of things to check, I was trying to do some independent study and I came across the trouble shooting on pinwiki and everything you mentioned was part of the list! I'll give all those a try and see what happens. Thanks again, appreciate everyone's advice.
-Matt

#2706 5 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Oh i forgot to mention that the headers on the 5v power supply could have some cracked solder joints. There's no support on those "wings" and at least on my board they were cracked really badly. I'd reflow those regardless of the state of things. Easy to pull that board and simple job to do.

You were right about the pins. They needed reflowed bad. The MPU C1 is reading at exactly 5.0 after some adjusting of the pot. The power supply tests at 5.2 with load and 5.6 when machine is on with J2 pulled.

Still intermitently getting the siren and flashers to lock on when booting the machine. I guess check for the ground mods is the next step.

So this issue is worse now than before. When I turn on the game it immediately locks on the flashers and siren and won’t boot. Voltage to the MPU is testing at 5v tried slightly increasing and decreasing with no changes. I also did the ground mods to all the boards.

Before if I would flip the game on and off several times I could get it to get past the flashers and boot but now it’s just locking up. Tried reseating chips. I also even tried getting one of those Daughter Board bypassing chips from pinitech to see if that would help.

What am I missing here????

#2757 5 years ago
Quoted from PinballAir:

You did the ground mods correct?
You also have to ground and reflow the ground headers on the left side of the bottom board.
There are either 2 or 4 of them. I eventually removed them and installed a terminal strip with a copper jumper to each ground to make sure my Gold Wings would behave,

Thanks for responding. I made some significant progress since yesterday. Just going to capture this here in case someone has a similar problem in the future.

Did the ground mods. All fine there.

In a tantrum of frustration I grabbed the original daughter and intentionally ripped it off the MPU because I was pissed and literally wanted to burn this game and much to my surprise it popped off in my hand with no effort.....there were some major modifications. Someone removed the daughter board and installed a socket for it. Several traces and pads were ruined under the daughter board but repaired on the back side. Bummer about this is the fixes bypassed the TC1 socket so the Piggy Duex wasn’t working that I got from pinitech. The pins coming from the daughter board were oxidized and dirty as hell. I cleaned them and got them extremely shiny and reseated the original daughter board and then cleaned the chip really well and reseated and BOOM, game plays perfectly!

I also had an issue with the knocker blowing transistors and fuses. I went to test the diode on the coil and according to the schematics the band was supposed to be on the red wire side but was actually installed backwards. Replaced the diode with the correct orientation and now EVERYTHING works.

I know Gold Wings gets a lot of negative reviews but I’m loving it. Installed 3 spot lights and added all LEDs in GI and under the playfield. Also ordered the alternate translight.

Go easy on me, I’m still new to this Gottlieb club, but with the boards. Every board is easy to find as a replacement but the MPU for System 80B... where are you guys getting replacements? And what I’ve observed popping up in the forum is people get boards from Rottendog and have problems with them.

This daughter board with the constant booting issues is driving me nuts. And the fact that there are mods to avoid these issues that I’m not able to use because of the previous repairs done to my board is a double bummer.

#2809 5 years ago

What a sexy translight!

Unfortunately it shows 80B as currently sold out, but I’ve not had a single problem with my Swemmer board. [using with a Ni-Wumpf driver]
Swemmer is on pinside here somewhere, I forget his handle. Also can be found on eBay occasionally.

I called Keith hes working on getting the 80B back in stock soon, has a few other systems ahead of it but hes doing what he can.
Thanks for the lead.
Hate to give up on the board I have, but its beyond me, I don't have the patience to dick around with it and I don't want to hog up this thread anymore than I have already with my newb questions.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Not sure, the former owner (who has been very gracious through this) indicates it is fairly new. Have to wait and see if anyone can chime in how to determine where the problem lies.

I just got a gold wings last month that had about 6 or 7 issues with lights, one of them was even the loop advance, all the problems were fixed with transistors on the driver board left of the MPU.

I know the frustration about not having the game work 100% and triggering OCD. The MPU on mine has a lot of booting issues because of the daughter board. But I had to fix a lot of light issues from blown transistors, a few solder joints need reflowed on various boards, did all the ground mods, and a few other things.

Doesn’t always boot but when it does I love playing this game!

Also what I’ve found during switch testing is once you adjust a close switch, hit the start button for it to clear and report all open.

#2853 5 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Its a fun game, I have managed to get the loop special twice and extra ball a few times. I find the tight playfield to my taste, it really keeps you on your toes! Maddening trying to get the multi-ball release shot when the lane lights up, I'm not anywhere near close to perfecting the shot yet.
Thank you for the tip on the switch "reset"
[quoted image]

I played a game the other day that felt like ball 3 lasted two days. All settings on conservative and special awards a credit.

Since Gold Wings is getting some love at the moment, anyone know of any air craft carrier or plastic arch repos?

#2869 5 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Question for Gold Wings owners- Do the two cockpit lights work? I just noticed them when cleaning some connections and they don't come on during gameplay or light testing. I watched some videos on Youtube and didn't see them come on in those games either. Something that was never implemented?

I only notice them during the lighting sequence when a ball is dropped in the shooter lane at the start, they flash a few times before you plunge. Also if you nail the spinner really good the cock pit of the jet and the light for the missile flash for a few spins. But nothing during attract mode. Same with the shoot again bulb, only blinks when you get the extra ball.

#2871 5 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

L18, they are in the test menu under lamp and solenoid tests.
The missile flashes on mine during spinner operation but no cockpit.

Have you checked/tested the transistors for those lights and the others you were having issues with? I know you mentioned some other problems with lighting previously, did those issues get resolved?

Quoted from Chisel:

Seems Gold Wings is on a streak lately! I just picked one up last week. Complete with topper but I am missing a couple playfield plastics. Would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out. The two top left PF "Clouds" just before and to the right of the top left loop shot. The top left apron is busted too, but mostly there except it wont hold the left most flasher dome... aircraft carrier is missing lower right corner but not horribly broken.
When I got it, it would turn on and play but at random times would lock the "Game Over" relay on/off, on/off, on/off until the machine was shut off. I thought it was a heat issue as it was random timing and the pin wouldn't always come out of it by turning it off and back on. Turns out the R6532P below the daughter board had a leg mostly out of the socket. Fixed that and did the cab and main MPU harness ground mods, installed NVRAM and she's now solid as a rock.
Any help with the plastics would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
