I'm looking for a clean Black Hole so I can join the coolest club on Pinside.

Great vid of Genesis...
this is how a dialed in Genesis really plays
» YouTube video

Nice...
I really like how the ramps do NOT feed back into the flippers. Nothing easy-mode going on in this game. Looks like a fight from start to finish.

Dear Gottlieb pinball gods,

I would like to join the sys80 club -- walk through the front door, and march straight down the isle.
I promise to love, cherish, clean, restore, and protect a beloved sys80.

thanks,
mof

Prayers answered! There *ARE* pinball gods afterall !

In da club ! Gotta go update my pin collection ! (And find a neighbor to help me cart it in the garage...)
=)

Had to do it... Will cross-reference back here for people who "do not dare to enter"...

The Black Hole!

Special thanks to "Dr. Gottlieb"

for his remote-help to help me get in my first game within an hour of getting it in the garage.

When did HAVING CREDITS become a requirement of using the REPLAY button? LOL... ! That must have been new for 1981. (Yes I was tired off my ass)

First time sys80 owner, long time listener. Got one dead pop on this BH, other 5 pops seem ok. What's a good strategy to troubleshoot? Also -- what are some basic readings I can take on the solenoid?

With power off, I have .1-.2 resistance between switch lugs on a good pop switch
on the bad pop, I have a wide range from .2 through 17. it keeps moving around. Does this point to a bad coil?

on the coil lugs, power off, good coil is 3 ohms
on bad pop its bad, so I presume bad coil. I guess I have to watch out for this pop locking on... (sigh) which might point to a board issue...

thanks,
mof

Someone's been infected with the Gottlieb virus. Haha! It's all blownfuse's fault...

He nearly infected me with coveting Spirit, but I think I got out of there just in time. I consider myself lucky that Devil's Dare wasn't ready to play, that might have got me infected.

What tool should I use to remove the nut from the key lock?
My socket sets max out at 13/16" -- this seems to be 7/8"
Or am I supposed to remove stuff to get to this?
thanks!

Quoted from Gerry:

A set of needle nose pliers get right in there...

I had tried mine, and they grip the fat "bolt-like center part" along with the nut. Maybe the pliers need to be extra extra long?
-mof

#298 10 years ago
Quoted from blownfuse:

I use a 3/8" drive 7/8" (3" deep socket) on all locks, less headache to use the right tool for the job.

What are some remote-battery options for sys80s?

Quoted from Pinballrus:

Somebody in this club got a line on an Alien Star for me? Blownfuse got me hooked on his!

The sounds of Spirit are still haunting me, I'd go Spirit over Alien Star hands down.

Quoted from CNKay:

So when are going to do the pinside BH tournament? No money just scores and bragging rights. I think it would be fun. Yes your going to be on your honor posting scores.

Good idea.

LOL, gimme a week or so to get mine back and up and running!

Apparently we have to have two different tournaments, since we have a few 3-ball and a few 5-ball owners.

-mof

#339 10 years ago

I'm so confused.
Just play whatever game you want to, and don't worry about the score. Everyone gets a hug and a trophy, it's 2014.
-mof

#343 10 years ago
Quoted from CNKay:

Interesting so we need to find out what the official BLKH acronym is.

There's an acronym thread. We should post / thumbs up there.

Shouldn't the acronym go to the machine most talked about in a group? (big hurt, black hole, big house, etc.)

Question:

Which sys80 plays most like Black Hole, but has no upper or lower PF ?

The punchiness, open space, and drops of Black Hole are really nice, wondering what an ideal second Gottlieb would be for me. My guess is Devil's Dare, but I've never played it.

-mof

#346 10 years ago

Damn, that's cool. 193 units made, I won't hold my breath for one -- what would be the 2nd best choice?
-mof

#350 10 years ago

Is there another sys80 like Black Hole that has pops in the middle of the field, or the outlane, that can hurt you? 3 of the 4 pops in Black Hole are your enemy. I like that.

Quoted from Jappie:

I've been in this hobby for 13 years now. I got hooked on pinball in the 90's and love the classics from those years. But I am starting to love System 80 pins. Always had a thing for rarer pins, and you don't see many early 80's Gottliebs in the Netherlands.
My current collection has 5 Gottliebs, in various stages of repair: Black Hole (US version), Haunted House, Volcano, Rack 'Em Up and TX- Sector. Used to have a Spirit, too. But sold it too early.
I've just recently started a new Youtube channel. 2 videos of my Gottliebs are on there now:
- a Black Hole gameplay video (running on Pascals PI-80 X4):
More will follow! Including the cleaning of my Rack 'em Up. Which is very necessary, as you can see in the ground mod video. So subscribe and 'like'!

Very nice video - your cabinet looks amazingly clean and bright!

She is sooooo nice, I love this machine so much

What game is it? Looks really neat.

Quoted from swampfire:

I think you'll regret opening this club up to us system 80B nuts.
The photo translites are usually faded and yellowed, but my Hot Shots TL is cleaning up really well in Photoshop. Check out the before/after scans! I'll check in with Steve at PBR tomorrow, but I'm betting that any translites for my game are long gone. I'll probably have my own printed after cleaning it up. Call me a hipster, but I kinda like the photoshopped translites from this era. My friend would call them "80's-tastic".

Nice work!
The carnival worker appears... distracted.

Does anyone know how to change the pitch of the vocal tone in a system 80?

I have a Black Hole with a deep voice. I was wondering if I can raise the voice pitch.

thanks!
-mof

#621 9 years ago
Quoted from hootowls:

First note the caution on page 12 of the manual about adjusting the pots on the sound/speech board.
Then check out Fred Swemmer's comments about adjusting the voice pitch on his new board here (old one's the same concept).

I see the pots, thanks!

Picked up a Black Hole on Saturday for $100. when I got it home I realized it was in better shape than I first thought. I already have it apart and this is going to be my first restoration pin.

Excellent!

Hey sys80 friends,

One of our beloved sys80 gurus, Steve Charland (aka blownfuse), is smack in the middle of a long healing process in long term care. Between chemo and pain meds, it makes it more challenging to focus and feel comfortable, so he's not on the internet these days.

"Hey Steve is great -- he's helped me with my sys80 machine! Get well, brother!"
"Wait, can I help Steve out in any way?"

YES. You can make a big difference in his healing.

He sure misses reading your stories on Pinside. Imagine being off Pinside for a few weeks? He could sure use some healthy doses of pinball distractions like we get every day.

Brother, can you spare 10 minutes of your day?

Please email me your most recent pinball story (doesn't have to be sys80 related, but always nice, right?), and I'll print 'em out with bigger fonts, and I'll deliver them to the hospital every few days.

From Steve, his family, and friends,

Thank you for helping him heal up!

Picked up a very nice Devil's Dare.

It had a known issue at the last show: no sound.

I am a sys80 rookie.

Any help appreciated: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/devils-dare-wont-boot

Next Issue: No voice on Devil's Dare, otherwise sounds are good -- can someone walk me through basic diagnostic tests?
