Testing the Hologram Kit on my desk, with an original Bally/Williams CPU and a DMD.

In general, it works fine, but I have detected a problem with the triggering of the "Creature Found" video, this and other videos are triggered with signals from the CPU. The rest of the videos of animations tested are triggered with switches on the playfield, and these work perfectly, the Kiss, Hotdog, Ice Cream, Cola and Pop Corn. The background videos (Bubbles and RITA boat) are also played correctly, these are automatically triggered if there are no other videos being played, the selected videos are played sequentially.

In this video, I have not put the two animations that are shown when starting the Kit, with the Logo of the company and the check, in 12 steps, of the system. For the tests, I find it much faster to skip these videos every time I start the software, I forgot to put them to make the video, but they are tested and work without problems.

Today I was trying to locate the problem and decided to make a modification in the design of the kit board, replacing one of the chips. The problem now is the Chinese and their coronavirus, all are delaying the return of their vacation, for this reason. All my supply of electronic boards, screens, cables, and connectors depends on Chinese suppliers. I think in one week I will have here the modified board with the new chip.

If not for this failure, the product would already be ready to be installed on a complete Creature machine and record a video of the product in play. My friend Orlando from STRPinball is waiting for the kit to install, test it and take pictures and videos of the installation and the product in playing on a Creature, I also need those photos for the user manual.

As for the firmware, I think I can include the Snack Bar video in this first firmware version, the animation is already finished, I just need to program the video trigger in the firmware. Like that of the "Creature Found" it is triggered with signals from the CPU, in this case with the lamp that indicates the "Snack Bar open".

I have programmed the firmware so that one video cannot interrupt another until at least 2 seconds have elapsed from the video being played, I think it is the best thing to avoid that multiple triggers in a short time can trigger many videos quickly, not I think it would be nice, although this parameter could also be put in a configuration file and that each user puts it according to their preferences.

I solved the mystery of the problem I had with the HolomodSP board for the Hologram Kit.

Today I was doing many tests throughout the day, I thought about a pinball CPU breakdown, ASIC failures, the chip that takes the signals from the CPU data bus, my hardware design failures that were altering the signals of the CPU, I even changed the design and sent to make a new board. Finally, by testing and checking the signals with the oscilloscope, I solved the mystery.

This is what happens when we work ONLY with the CPU instead of with the complete machine. For everything to work properly, the Pinball Drivers board is essential because that board installs resistor arrays on the data and address signal buses. I programmed all the firmware without having that board connected, or instead, as I have done now for the tests, some resistors soldered on the output connector of the CPU, which do the same functions.

Before, apparently the firmware of the HolomodSP worked with the signals of the CPU, but it did it in a very unstable way and only correctly with the signals of the switches of the playfield, now when connecting the arrays of resistors, the signals are already correct and stable, but the firmware is not programmed to interpret them and does not work.

I just have to make some modifications to the firmware and everything should work perfectly. It is not complicated, by Tuesday everything could be ready to send a complete kit to my friend Orlando to try it in a Creature, take pictures and videos of the installation and the product playing on the machine, including the videos of the Creature found and the Snack Bar. Then I will contact the first 20 users of the order list to make the payments, and while I will order the 20 display stands, the sound cables, and some connectors.

The only bad thing that could cause delays is the situation in China with the coronavirus. Almost all of my suppliers are Chinese, and some have already told me that they delay their back to work a week after the spring festival vacations. Also, as all the problems come together, my Pick and Place machine for assembling the boards has an intermittent fault in one of the cameras, and the Chinese have already told me that until the 9th they will not be able to send me the spare part that was planned send tomorrow day 3. Also, the screens come from China, now I have 20 units (actually 19, because one is defective), but I need many more, I planned to order 100 screens, but I don't know when the Chinese will answer me, so after manufacturing these first 19 units, I still don't know what the delivery time will be for the next batch and I don't want to request any payment for the second batch until I find out.

On the other hand, based on doing so many tests, I have discovered how to trigger the video of the Snack Bar. The lamp on the Snack Bar Open playfield flickers after hitting the four targets of Ice Cream, Cola, PopCorn and Hotdog, then pulling the Center Subway ( switch 17 on the board) the DMD play the Menu and the lamp is fixed. I will program the firmware to trigger the Snack Bar video when this lamp flash and its ready to include it in the firmware.

We continue with the videos. I told the graphic designer to check the sound of all the videos to have the same level of sound since they were not standardized, and that would then be a problem to mix and adjust the volume with respect to the sound of the machine. He has already been working on it, and now all the videos have the right sound level.

Attached final version of the Snack Bar video, with a few improvements.

1.- The duration of the video is increased to 22 seconds.
2.- Some more fireworks effects are added for extended time.
3.- To the sound of the fireworks, the whistle is added, in addition to the final explosion.
3.- The duration of the music is extended to make a synchronized video closure.
4.- The curvature of the background buildings is adjusted to correspond to the curvature of the asphalt and other elements of the scene, with a fisheye lens effect, as I already mentioned.
5.- A video closure is made, progressively disappearing all the elements of the scene, in the opposite direction at the beginning of the video.
6.- The neon effect of the OPEN poster is changed.

And with this, we have finished the video of the Snack Bar. I have thought of several ways to trigger this video, I finally think that I will do it in the following way: When the ball hits a target of any of the 4 characters on the menu (Hotdog, IceCream, PopCorn, Cola), I will check the status of the lamps of the other 3 characters, if they are all on it is when the lamp of the OPEN Snack Bar starts to flash, and this is when this video will be triggered.

Tomorrow the designer will start working on the next video, which will be the Jackpot, Super Jackpot or Extra Ball.

The video of the Snack Bar will be included in the first firmware version of the first 20 units that I will manufacture. This video is only part of the FULL package, as well as the rest of the videos that we are going to design until we complete the 24 planned videos (it is possible that we make some more videos, we are studying it according to the playfield signals).

PS: at the beginning of the attached video we hear some strange noises as if the designer had left the microphone signal open and had captured ambient noise, I have already told him to check it and correct it. I also seem to hear a permanent background hum, definitely the sound of this video needs corrections.

Impressive troubleshooting on the firmware triggering side!

We are working already on the Jackpot video, this time we have created a storyboard to avoid having to make major changes to the design once it is created.

Basically the animation is based on a slot machine, with the rollers spinning, these will show characters from the movie or game board. Will be animated, the spinning of the rollers, the Jackpot text, lights, coins (I don't know if we will put it) and confetti explosions. We have not yet tried music for this video.

On the other hand, the designer has continued to create drawings for the CREATURE video, these are drawings of the creature's head and the claw, now we could use some of those drawings to put them on the rollers of the Jackpot and Super Jackpot slot machine.

As for the manufacture of the product, I am waiting for a response from the Chinese suppliers, they confirm that they return to work on the 10th, a week was delayed by order of the Chinese government due to the coronavirus. Fundamentally, I need custom cables, connectors, and microcontrollers for the Holomodsp board from Chinese suppliers. I also await a response from the suppliers of screens for the order of the second batch to be manufactured.

I am also waiting for the Chinese manufacturer to send me the spare part of the camera for my Pick and Place machine with which I assemble the plates, now it has an intermittent fault that makes it difficult for me to manufacture the plates safely, sometimes it works and sometimes fails in any moment leaving the plate unfinished.

In short, the infamous coronavirus is delaying the production of kit plates and the purchase of screens for the second batch.

What’s going on with this. It’s been quiet

#1757 4 years ago

I'm guessing he shipped a kit to his buddy last Tuesday. So with any luck he should have it installed in his CFTBL, and in the progress of doing gameplay videos with the complete kit installed. Fingers crossed...

#1758 4 years ago

The kit to install and test in a Creature is already sent, I hope we can test it this week on the machine, although that does not depend only on me.

The problem now is the coronavirus in China. The factories should have returned to work on February 3, by order of the Chinese government they were delayed to day 10, then to 17, we are already at 18 and we are still the same.

The problem is that Chinese suppliers have to supply me with screens, cables, connectors, and processors. Although I have 19 screens here and the cables and connectors could be obtained in Europe, the Kinetis processors I must order to China, because here the cost is more than three times. Only one of my Chinese suppliers, the one that makes me the PCBs is working, the rest all closed. The thing looks bad, because of the number of dead and infected only increases, due to the virus, and that delays the return to work of most suppliers.

While we continue working with the design of the videos.

1.- Some problems have been corrected in the Snackbar video, the background hum and a strange sound that was heard when starting the video were removed.
2.- An extended version of the Snack Bar video is created, for a duration of 2 minutes, this will also be used as a background video while the Snack Bar Open lamp is blinking (stop blinking when shooting at the Center Subways, switch 17 of the playfield).
3.- In the logo video, the final image that was too dark is replaced, the background color of the logo is also given more clarity. All so that the edge of the mask can be seen better.
4.- Vectorized several drawings for use in the slot machine rollers in the Jackpot video (girl, creature, paw).
5.- Testing several soundtracks for the Jackpot video

I love the videos so far. Really hoping all this comes together. It will a HUGE upgrade for Creature owners.

#1760 4 years ago

First illustrations for the Jackpot video, as always this is just sketches, the end result is much better, and much remains to be done. For these animations we will work with Cinema 4D mainly, and some effects with Adobe After Effects.

As for news to be able to manufacture the product, today one of my Chinese suppliers tells me that they have already back to work, this is the provider of cables and connectors. Today I have placed the order and payment of these components.

Now I need that the suppliers of screens and processors answer me and can supply me the material. Specifically, I need to get Kinetis processors, these are the same ones that I use to manufacture my Multicolor DMDMK66 DMDs, and I'm almost out of stock, and the ones I have left are for DMD orders (which are quite a lot).

I hope that most Chinese suppliers will be available again between March 1 and 6 at the latest. Finally, the coronavirus problem is going to delay everything for 1 month, with respect to what was planned.

Trying with new font types for the Jackpot text and backgrounds. The size of the rollers is increased so that the drawings are more visible. For the center, we are thinking of taking some video scenes from the movie.

The background probably won't be any of those seen in these drawings, I don't want to repeat the same ray background that was already used with the Snackbar's food characters, nor use a simple background color. We have to do more tests.

In the animation, there will be many special effects, with the text Jackpot, and some colorful confetti effects. Animations will also be made of coins and some other things.

Maybe a creature themed slot using icons featured in the game? Reuse of the snack bar guys, creature faces, the old cars? Maybe results in 3 creature heads for a jackpot?

You see these kinds of themed slots a lot in casinos these days.

Yes, that is the idea for the Jackpot video. And for the Super Jackpot we will make a variant with 4 rollers in the slot machine and other special effects in the animation.

Attached, new background test, this is already quite close to my idea, although we still have to modify the design of the rays, which will also be animated.

Would be wonderful to get just a status update. love to get this for my restore I’m about to dive into cheers and great work

#1767 4 years ago

Project status.

It seems that most Chinese companies return to work, and suppliers begin to reply in order to get the material needed to manufacture the product. A long month late, for the spring festival vacations in addition to the Covid-19 problem.

Yesterday I received the Kinetis processors for the main board of the kit, the same one I use on the DMDMK66 screens, I had almost no stock.

Today my provider of cables, connectors and SD sockets answered me, and finally, I could place the order and make the payment, I hope to receive all these components in about 10 days.

I also received a reply from two of the screen providers. One will tell me tomorrow the delivery time, the other gives me a delivery time of 4 to 6 weeks. This would be to manufacture the second batch, for the first batch of 20 kits I have screens, I only needed processors (which I received yesterday), cables, connectors and SD sockets (which I hope to receive in 10 days).

While we continue with the development of the video of the Jackpot, using in this case, in addition to After Effects, the Cinema 4D software to animate the rotation of the rollers. We are vectorizing some new characters for the rollers (diver, film camera), with the background design almost finished (image attached). We start shortly with the tests of the animations and the special effects, leaving for the end the soundtrack. This video will probably already be included in the FULL package of the first firmware version, although I have not yet programmed which signals to trigger it (probably the playfield lamp 56, plus some other signal).

#1768 4 years ago

First test of the rotation of the three rollers of the slot machine, with some effects on the lights of the central ring. We also started testing several background soundtracks.

There is still much to do until the final result. We still have to decide among other things, what we put in the center of the ring, it could be some scene of the movie, some quality video of the ball in play on the playfield, the 3D creature, etc ... Many special effects are missing to add, a confetti effect when the rollers stop, effects on the text of the Jackpot, additional effects on the lights of the central ring. We also have to improve the rotation of the rollers a lot and add a few more vectorized characters.

I'd say he has valid point--we are way overdue to see video of this mod installed in a game.

#1774 4 years ago

Actually I tried but I ran into issues once I started timing videos off switches, which is why I’d guess we haven’t seen video from the actual game. I used a much differnt set up and I really really hope he has it figured out and is successful with it. I just don’t see how China production has effected a kit he said he sent to someone for testing hasn’t showed one installed video

It’s a sad situation, correct. But that’s not the reason for not showing a working mod. There reason is much simpler: it doesn’t work!

He showed some testing videos of the matrix pcb and there you can see that the video triggering is delayed, triggers on false positives, and there are blank outs between the different videos. This is completely opposite to what he proposed and announced before.

Despite these things I wish everyone to stay healthy!!!

Raaalph has been crapping on this thread for awhile. I wouldn't use him as the expert on the progress of the hologram mod. I never could figure out why guys like him shit on threads like this when no one has been asked to send money or fund in anyway this project.

The OP has a list of initial folks that have agreed to send payment WHEN A FULLY WORKING MOD IS MADE AVAILABLE TO VIEW.

I hope the OP is successful, as it is clearly needed.

Well, one of his “friends“ that has a unit for testing told someone that the mod has not been installed nor tested yet.
What I want to point out is not that this is a good or bad mod (intention is great!), but instead that progress is FAR from what is proposed here.

#1785 4 years ago

I’m bored in UK lockdown so come here for some winging first off hope the OP is safe! this virus is battering some countries harder then others!

I think the basic core of this mod is to capture the various signals from the machine and the. Trigger videos this is probably far harder to get working then the OP first thought, and why you see no working videos. Just the easy to create video clips.

Maybe it’s easier to use the DMD to trigger off then all the lamps / switches? Let the machine do all the work for you and basically work out what clip to show?

I think the op has a FANTASTIC set of assets for this mod but a none existent system to trigger them

I am still alive but concerned about other issues, with a family member sick with coronavirus in the Intensive Care Unit, in serious condition. So now my priority is health, and I cannot take care of other matters.

Spain is the second country in the world in infected and dead, although soon the United States will overtake us. Here by order of the government, no one can go out of their houses to the street, except for people who work in Hospitals, food supermarkets, and pharmacies. Anyone who is on the street without justification is fined 600 to 30,000 Euros or is arrested by the police and taken to the police station.

The last thing I did about the mod, several weeks ago, was to modify the design of the kit board since I detected errors in reading the CPU data, but it worked perfectly reading the switches. I changed a couple of chips and everything works. I sent the kit to install on a friend's machine (to his workshop), but as I said, nobody can leave their homes here by order of the government, except for essential activities (buying food, medicine or working in authorized work companies).

The graphic designer has continued working on the video of the Jackpot, although in Colombia, which is where he lives, they are also suffering from coronavirus problems. In the attached video (in low resolution, we no longer render in high resolution until the final version, so as not to waste hours of work), one of the last tests we have done, but there are still many things to correct.

As for the material to manufacture the kits, I have the package with cables and connectors on hold at Hong Kong Customs, a second order of 100 screens is also pending delivery from China. The company that manufactures for me the support for the screen in Spain still works, but I doubt that from today they can make the shipment, because the courier and transport agencies only transport essential products, by order of the government, this is food, medicines, and medical products.

And so far the war report.
