Balls exiting the orbit can roll off the extended flipper to the bottom left flipper instead of the right, or used to hit various roll overs. I use it all the time actually.

It would have been cool though to have a ramp that descended from his gold pile for the final shot to kill Smaug by using it. I'd bet it was part of an early design that was scrapped and the flipper kept.
