Hopefully they move at least one of those over to Free Play Florida after they are done with them at IAAPA.

#2278 5 years ago
Quoted from Rockytop:

Looking forward to seeing all the changes.

Quoted from Rockytop:

I bet you will be able to shoot into the Smaug area somehow at least.

You can't be serious? The game designer is long gone from JJP. At most there will be a few superficial changes like a hurried replacement for the book after it suddenly became a "placeholder" when the game bombed at Expo.

#2281 5 years ago
Quoted from Pinchroma:

Wow are you a negative nancy.

Just saying not to set your hopes to high so not to be too disappointed. At Expo everyone expected the Smaug toy to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and we all know how that turned out.

#2284 5 years ago
Quoted from Pinchroma:

Turned out to be the greatest thing since sliced NY bagels

Now you are talking. Its hard to get a good bagel down here in Florida outside of Ft Lauderdale.

#2288 5 years ago
Quoted from Rockytop:

I don't take myself too seriously, especially when it comes to pinball, but yes I believe there will be more than superficial changes.
Jack said new shots. That seems like the best area for new shots, so I would say logically, it is more likely than not, that you will be able to shoot into Smaug somehow.

I hope you are right, but I am not confident that much can be done in one month without last minute changes to the playfield itself. I look forward to playing it this week. My favorite part of this game is the huge number of individually controlled drop targets. I am a drop target kind of guy and to me this is the main "toy" on this game.

#2295 5 years ago
Quoted from lllvjr:

Book was a place holder the whole time.

So why on earth would they not say that during the reveal? If this is true it would be an epic mistake considering how many people I know personally who cancelled their orders based on the reaction from Expo. I hope they do come up with something cool in place of the book. Maybe something that initially got cut for cost reasons might be returning? An LCD?

#2321 5 years ago
Quoted from mnpinball:

People are really clueless and naive to what was presented at expo, the game was a prototype.
Lockbar button missing, 5" LCD book missing, Smaug body missing with diverter . VUK wireforms missing. New playfield art.
Game will be fantastic. Can't wait Probably some other surprises as well. Something between the top speakers

We knew about the button, I hope you are correct on the rest! I will be playing it Friday morning, so we will see for sure.

Quoted from Jamaster10:

its 6am here in Orlando and 58 degrees
ill be at iappa 8- 830 ish
ill post pics there fellas, as if you read a few pages back I already stated that
Yes a video as well
Ill Shoot it when I get there
Chicagoland JJP Dist
.Ill show
the playfield as well in detail.

You should start a new thread with "IAAPA Hobbit pictures and video" so it doesn't get lost thousands of posts deep in this thread. A link from this thread to the new one can be posted too.

#2456 5 years ago

The changes to the playfield and apron art looks fantastic. Same with the ramps. With little or no change to the actual ball interaction they made the game look 100% more fun and exciting already. Great job.

#2958 5 years ago

Hard to believe JJP did not bring the Hobbit to Free Play Florida this weekend. The show this weekend is literally 2 minutes from IAAPA too. Hundreds of games, great show, thousands of people and no Hobbit or WOZ for that matter. Guess I'll go back into the show, play some TWD and talk to Gary.

#2962 5 years ago
Quoted from Pimp77:

You should've taken the TWO minutes to head over to IAAPA yourself...
They can't attend EVERY show. IAAPA is the right show to go to over FPF.

Funny they were at both shows the last three years in a row. Oh well their loss. But you are the expert.

#2965 5 years ago
Quoted from dannunz:

Who is the jjp distributor in that area? They should be covering that show.

Yes they are...

#2978 5 years ago

The 800 pound gorilla here is the Expo flop and all the cancelled orders. JJP and The Hobbit HAD to be a IAAPA. Not to mention IAAPA is a much softer venue for pinball. 99.9% of the people who go there haven't played pinball in 20 years if ever - believe me, I've been there. On the other hand FPF is a huge pinball show with all the main players there ready to critique the game. JJP did not want to chance a second flop in a month's time with the game about to release.

#3013 5 years ago

Turns out the MMr people had three machines at IAAPA and did not bother to come to FPF either. I was talking to Marco tonight and we were both scratching our heads why they did not bring games either. Oh well...

#3017 5 years ago
Quoted from Santeh:

This is a good point and one I had not considered. Has Planetary had an exhibit at the Southern Pinball Festival prior to this year?

No, but they also were not at IAAPA previously as far as I know.

Quoted from robotron:

they should have an option for scoring on the hobbit.

Yeah it is so simple too. Just add the zero back on the end and it will be fine.

#7426 4 years ago
Quoted from Rick432:

Oh, there are many, many, MANY, more than mere BOXES of trolls around here...

I remember seeing a bunch of boxes of trolls in Australia years ago. Just sayin'.

#7451 4 years ago
Quoted from dgarrett:

Given all the speculations about PF being ruined by all the speculators in this thread...
Where are you getting these pictures?

Dude that picture was a joke. It was the supposed Australian picture turned upside down. Same picture...

#7475 4 years ago
Quoted from catboxer:

I called that about 8 months ago saying late q3 early q4 and jack personally thumbs downed me. No horse in the race, just call me a realist.

So by the time this game is out, if you believe the strong rumors, their competition will have a game with a much better and more relevant theme with a fire breathing dragon. Just sayin. Could be an interesting Expo.

#7532 4 years ago
Quoted from TigerLaw:

JJP had some start up pains, no doubt, pinball is hard.

JJP was circling the toilet bowl and about to drop in because they did not know how to run a manufacturing operation. They had the sales part down, but they squandered way too much money on design and production. Delays and redesigns cost money. Having to keep the lights on and people employed while bleeding hundreds of thousands of dollars to do things like redesign a simple damn LED board system and replace them in the field is a killer. They are over four years in and have shipped somewhere south of 2000 games. They promised the world and then reality set in.

Fortunately it appears this new investor came in just before they went under and seems to have deep pockets. Hopefully the investor is exerting some control and providing some of their own factory managers and quality specialists (ISO9000) and moving Jack into a sales-only role. Simply handing a bunch of money to someone who blew a perfectly doable business situation is not exactly a smart investment. That is after all what JPOP seems to be wanting.

#7567 4 years ago

Don't forget the new money trumping old money. People who lay down cash during production get a game before someone who paid three years earlier...

#7873 4 years ago

Due to budget and licensing issues this game is now based on the Finnish Television version of the Hobbit from the 90s. Looks awesome though.

#7963 4 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

There was a Q & A session at the show, so I expect they would have at least discussed the progress of the Hobbit. From their facebook page:

Hope everyone had their pant legs rolled up.

#8076 4 years ago
Quoted from Trekkie1978:

LCD roughly the same size as a DMD?

LCD the size of a DMD. Would not want one the size of JJP - that is way, way too big. A 14 inch laptop screen would be perfect.

#8143 4 years ago

This is an interesting tangent on this thread. Having a high res LCD puts the movie or theme in your face, unlike the 128x32 resolution of a DMD ever could. DMD makes a mediocre movie or theme that you might not be fond of a lot more tolerable. For instance, at least Alec Baldwin is not animated in HD in TS! Meanwhile I cringe little bit every time I see the video clips on The Hobbit prototypes because those movies are so undeserving of another second of my time. Conversely, LCD makes a great movie or theme that you really like all that much better. I can't wait to see what is done with Alien!

#8237 4 years ago
Quoted from pindome:

Does anyone know or have a reasonable guess as to how many Smaug SE's will be built vs the 1,500 LE's?

Everyone I know personally bailed on THLE after expo except one person who only has $500 down. At this point I would be shocked if they have paid up pre-orders left on many more than 600 games total including all the models. Either way, the numbers from JJP are meaningless as tits on a bull.

#8247 4 years ago
Quoted from thePLAyNone:

John you know me , I didn't bail, and I am paid in full See you at free play!

I might know you. Don't recognize the avatar?...

#8248 4 years ago
Quoted from BC_Gambit:

Unless I have been living in crazy town, aren't both more or less owned by Jack (I have no idea about minority owners, if things have changed etc...).
But before there was Jersey Jack, there was "Jack from pinball sales.com". Jack played it ("it" being whatever the most recent Stern was at the time), and he liked it!

You are not crazy. Most of us came to know Jack many years ago as the proprietor of pinballsales.com

#8261 4 years ago
Quoted from PinballSTAR:

Contact us for best pricing on all models of Hobbit - Standard, LE, or Smaug.

So new JJP games can be bought below MSRP?

#8383 4 years ago
Quoted from Cheeks:

at the last minute!

Interesting choice of words. Something tells me this is not the last minute.

#8457 4 years ago

There may have been a time in 2014 when they were producing games that fast. I doubt they are near that level of staffing until TH actually starts production.

#8475 4 years ago
Quoted from jgentry:

I think they have given up suggesting any start time at this point. A few more weeks used to be the common reply but that started 10 months ago I'm not sure JJP even knows when they will be able to start, parts seem to be coming in though so it has to be getting closer.

They recently said "Fall". Fall starts in a week or so and ends Dec 20th. Based on previous experience with WOZ, anyone waiting on TH should be doing cartwheels if they ship any games before 2016.

#8496 4 years ago

Looks a shit load better now! Not just the artwork. The VUKs and layout look better than before.

#8529 4 years ago

So they pulled out a bank of the drop targets in the redesign? I can't remember if it had 11 or 15 initially.
