Wow, PF is a quantum leap better....just astoundingly better! Can they get that artist to redo my ACDC play field art?

Sigh, it reinforces my thoughts that sometimes they do themselves a disservice by showing so much in-process work, but perhaps they needed to?

Still not sold on smaug, but time will tell.

Big kudos on that PF, just gorgeous!

Very nice!
Fantastic improvement when compared to the original version (the side by side comparison is cruel for the old one).
Great reaction from JJP.

Here is one that's less cruel to the old one.

Almost makes me wish I did not cancel. Looking so much better.

#2454 5 years ago

I might be in the minority, but based on the few photos that have been posted, I like the gold Smaug.

I think it blends better with the gold mounds. Still wish it had fangs.

Overall, I am much more impressed with the package. It now looks like a game I would like to play and maybe someday, if I ever expand my collection, own.

#2455 5 years ago

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I think I prefer the original PF art that features the Lonely Mountain. Any idea if we will have an opportunity to select from the two designs a la the cab art?

#2456 5 years ago

The changes to the playfield and apron art looks fantastic. Same with the ramps. With little or no change to the actual ball interaction they made the game look 100% more fun and exciting already. Great job.

I am right there with you, all they had to do was brighten the colors up. Maybe change a few, didn't need the dragon in your face taking over the whole picture. Particularly when hes just a few inches away taking over the back of the playfield as a 3D talking sculpture. It's just too much IMHO.

Well done JJP! See feedback helps when it's constructive.

#2459 5 years ago

Wow, looks so much better. With Smaug now on the playfield in a much better form I'm not sure which version to get. I want a red Smaug head no matter which but I think I might prefer the bronze armor and the LE side art just to have everything represented better.

#2460 5 years ago

Great work on JJP and team for the fast changes. Wireforms, playfield art and the changes @ Bag end all look much better. The book LCD placement is a bit odd, but I am sure that will get worked out. Overall good additions all around!

Thanks for listening to the feedback

#2461 5 years ago

Playfield is a billion times better now. It has crisp distinct colors, action lines and text are clear, it's exciting and bold. Congrats JJP and thanks for listening to constructive criticism. The game has now gone from looking "Homemade" to "Professional".

To the two people who like the original boring mudslide blob playfield .....waaaaah, you'll come around.

The colors are great, I love how vibrant it looks now. its the giant dragon pic I have an issue with. It's redundant.

Also, I think there are 3 of us

Quite true. I'm not saying I don't like the new design - I do. But I also planned on switching to the Smaug SE and the cabinet coupled with the playfield art might feature a little too much dragon, if that's possible. As far as the aesthetic changes to the rest of the game (wireforms, LCD book, etc.) they are very well done. Bravo, JJP!

I liked the old one...but wow, the new one IS sooooo much better! I love the green at the bottom, reds at top. It pops now! And the dragon...front and center and mean and nasty. Love it!

You know what's really really great about this?

Games will be shipping soon

That's just a play field picture... Wait till the LEDs are glowing on it. Imagine what that will look like with colors ghosting around them all

You just heard it from the horses mouth. That's Matt. The brilliant artist behind Smaug and the sculpts on the playfield

I like Smaug on the playfield, but agree with it being redundant with the SE side art. I may switch to the LE to have the cabinet be focused on the characters. Mine will sit where both side arts will be visible. I'll get the best of both worlds.

Matt, any black depth added to the gold smaug or staying as seen in the pic as straight gold top to bottom?

Well what I meant was sooner then other boutique games that are coming lol

I am the one making them

Also don't know if anyone had noticed but I had the new goblin and orc on the game at expo. So the faces have been redone as well.

Did you also handle the tweaked Smaug sculpt? It looks really good with the smaller coins.

I am sure we will be having a meeting with Jack and crew through out this week and after Iappa to make final of whats all what and what was suggested. So at the moment to my knowledge this is a possibility.

Good point - much better comparison!

(Still find the new version way better)

Here u go, keep in mind they look different in the machine, there is just white behind then and that doesnt give u the best idea of how they look in the game with the cover and the pf and lighting of the game. The ones on the bottom are the new ones. Old ones did not get a great reaction but more importantly I made them to large and they did not fit in the mech. So it was very clear for 2 big reasons they had to change

before these new photos I was HESITANTLY still in and paid in full.

now I'm glad I stayed. MUCH better looking playfield and wireforms are great. Love the LCD [hated the book placement at expo] and excited again to get the machine.

Get 'em done and shipping boys!!

A dark wash on the gold to bring out the details in the lines and crevices would probably be a big help. Back in my Warhammer mini painting days that's what we'd do, a chestnut wash over gold for instance, let it settle in the low areas. Otherwise you lose too much definition to the metallic color.

Glad to hear the teeth are still coming. It's like the Metallica snake, it looks like a turtle when it's defanged, you gotta have the teeth!

#2483 5 years ago

REALLY like the bottom 2 smash heads better now.
seems everyone is listening these days!

#2484 5 years ago

I like the new sculpts better also, good job Matt

#2485 5 years ago

I really like the theme. I liked the old PF art, but if I had to pick I'd go with the new version. Other than that I'm still out based on the latest updates as it still falls very short of what I would be expectating for the price and theme and based on the high bar set by WOZ.

Today, I am proud to call myself a JJP Fanboy.

PS - I'm still waiting for CraZ4Pin to stop crying and chime in. Sorry you cancelled your order yet, Tim?

Yup that's what I was thinking... Gold will pop like a mofo.. Haha

Love the new heads matt

#2488 5 years ago

That new PF is amazing. Man it looks cool, and although I was hoping for more of Smaugs body to be represented the head is much better without that mountain back drop. I'm really happy with the look thus far, cant wait.

Bravo!

Great work Matt. These are especially nice considering the near 2D depth they have to be made.

#2493 5 years ago

Glad to see all the changes to The Hobbit. The game looks amazing.

Jack listened to his customers and together we call help Jack design the best pinball game to date. I think that what Jack intended to do when he started this company. I had confidence in JJP and that's why I never even considered dropping out of the preorder.

#2494 5 years ago

This is great. It's like old skool with the new stuff. Should be big hit on location.

#2495 5 years ago

Ok, JJP - that was way more than possibly everyone expected and I'm officially full blown away.

The new playfield art (really like the red "arrows") together with the new apron and the plastics/decals look superb.
The wireform vuks, the changed BagEnd and moved book position also give the player a better view on this game, it's just great to see that much now.

I was also too harsh on the ramps - with decals and etching they don't look so alien anymore and go very well with the game, I like it.

From the current available pictures I only think that the gold-gold Smaug does not look that great.
Almost too much gold and no real contrast make it so...inconspicuous.

Btw. can we get the reason on the closing of the entrance to the shooter lane from beorn outlane?
Must be a gameplay reason as it seemed to be a cool feature and nobody minded it...

Well here's the thing about the "giant dragon" - Both versions have Smaug in the center, so you can easily say the old version is redundant as well. The dragon's there no matter what. The first version was dull, boring and lifeless...mountain, small dragon, sky. The new version has vibrancy, energy, personality. It sells the tone and grand nature of this adversary.

Agreed.

When I look at them side-side what jumps out at me is the more warm and earth tones found in the new pf. Too much blue on the old one. IMO the new playfield is much better.

I love the new playfield with the "giant dragon". The side art is too similar to the playfield for me. I'm thinking LE cabinet with new playfield should represent all characters nicely.
