Greetings Pinball Fans,
Today we are excited to reveal the lower portion of an early Hobbit Pinball Whitewood.

We wanted to show this photo to give some flavor to what the playfield space will look like. No real inserts, artwork or upper shot with ramps are shown yet. In the next couple of weeks, we will reveal most of that and show a flipping whitewood. In as much as this raises more questions and excitement, it goes along the line of showing some of our product development which has helped build JJP's loyal fan base.

"I'm getting very excited to see how The Hobbit is coming together" said Jack Guarnieri. "There are some very cool elements of the game including some things that have not been done before so this game will be another full featured action packed game from JJP. I'm looking forward to showing off a shooting playfield in the coming weeks!"

Unlike The Wizard of Oz where everyone knew the story line and characters, The Hobbit has had many closely guarded secrets including what Smaug looked like. Thankfully our Design Team has access to assets from the Trilogy and must work in secret. This obviously limits what we can show but we are making great progress on the game.

Game Designer, Joe Balcer says, "The Hobbit has so many unique characters, iconic objects, places, weapons, and story content that our team is sorting through everything to have the right mix as a finished product in a timely manner. Believe me, it is a huge challenge to top WOZ as a complete package, but the goal we have set for ourselves is to do just that! The Hobbit is coming along just as I imagined it would from the day we signed the contract. This is an incredible title that needs an awesome game to go with it, and our team will undeniably accomplish that. Smaug lives...you'll see!"

According to Yahoo: Finance, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" has crossed $800 million at the worldwide box office, with markets still to open. The film, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), has thus far grossed an estimated $242.2 million domestically and $566 million internationally, for a worldwide estimated total of $808.2 million to date."

This video from Graphic Designer, JP De-Win is an early work-in-progress compilation and should give everyone an idea of what to expect to see on that big HD LCD in the backbox of The Hobbit. Music done by Nick Phoenix.

Sweet. I hope those static images with motion like the fire on the cauldron is the same idea as the woz static bg image. That looks awesome. Love the score too.

**edit, read the presser again, that is a rough cut of the LCD image. My bad. Awesome!**

Is that the white wood or the real playfield and they just ran out of parts and will the playfield be screen printed or a decal (couldn't resist)??

I noticed the reflection in the JJP logo video is no longer showing WOZ

Yes.. much better overall look than WOZ IMHO

It appears ball launch goes straight to Smaug. Wonder what the skill shot will be.

4 goblin holes in the above pic? I assume they are not trolls? (pun intended?)

I had not heard of Joe Balcer before. Had to look him up.

I dig the display. The screen looks WAYYYYYYYY better than WOZ. Not a fan of the Brady Bunch quadrants.

What are all those pop up squares??

#19 9 years ago

How sweet would it be if the machine had water in it. I'm also thinking FIRE or at least smoke!

He must suck at pinball....

Look like Trolls/Nighcrawler pop ups but would be cool if they led to subway.

Great video!

Exciting pinball times we are in.

Knowing Keith there will be multiple skill shots - one to Smaug, one to the upper left flipper where you have to make a shot, etc.

#26 9 years ago

Epic! This machine is gonna be Awesome! Can't wait to see the working playfield.

#27 9 years ago

Oh wow! I feel that is going to be one heck of amazing pin! Looks like its shaping up nicely. New interface looks very cool. I can see how certain scoring elements will likely be placed in the four corners of the screen.

#28 9 years ago

I like the map in the middle with blue, yellow or green dots which seem to correlate with a scene and character at that particular location in middle earth.

Good catch on the pinball in the logo reflecting the hobbit playfield. Nice touch

I also see scores greater than a million.

The audio in this game is going to raise the bar I think for pinball sound. Very cool that JJP has hired Two Steps From Hell to do the music.

Anyone else notice that there are no longer drops below the left and right upper flippers? The layout design shows drop targets in those locations with targets behind them but the white wood shows standard standing targets. Is this how the game will be made or is that just for the white wood and drop targets in those locations will be in the game?

I hope its the last option as come on this is a JJP game and it should have a lot of mechanical toys / features like WOZ.

Update: I do notice a lot of space between the stand up targets and the playfield in front of it on the white wood picture. Seems like that space may be intended for the actual drop targets?

I'm pretty sure it will still have drops . I heard that the game was going to have a lot of drops so..... Take that for what it's worth

My 1st NIB game ever is looking mighty fine so far. Love the new look display format with the main video in the middle and the corners containing progress indicators/possible modes.

#41 9 years ago

Not gonna lie... that video was great. Very excited to see more. This could be the JJP game I've hoped it could be.

#42 9 years ago

WoZ raised the bar to a new level, this will set a world record high mark no doubt in my mind. I'm glad I'm in on this one.

Think Cyclopse, Class of 1812 and Defender

#44 9 years ago

It's really hard to tell but so far I don't see anything good to shoot at with the upper flippers that can't be hit by the lowers. Kind of a bummer. They seem like they're there just to be there. I'd like to see a ramp or loop to shoot at. Is anyone else reading this differently?

I overlaid the CAD blueprint over the whitewood shot, makes it a little easier to see how some things fit together.
