A gentle tap on the cabinet and right back into play.

Quoted from RichieWrench:

It plays but none of the lights work on the playfield. .. Can someone help me on what that could be?

The LEDs plug into boards fastened to the bottom of the playfield, start there and be sure connectors are on tight. Then look carefully around the rear of the metal box with all the boards, behind it and along side. Something came unplugged.

Back of the head is a sticker? I don't get it or the photo...?

The yellow words are on a big black sticker, not silk screened directly to the wood.

Just another cheap way

No. And way easier to replace later if the back gets scratched or something.

Lloyd I'm going on over a month without any further help on my ticket, #9079. Should I just open a new one?

I bumped it up to JJP Parts again.

Quoted from Goronic:

I think you mean 4 Gig vs 8 Gig.

Do all Hobbits come with 8 GB of system memory? By having him check are you thinking that a 4 GB stick has came loose?

They should have two memory sticks of 4 GB each for a total of 8 GB.

Easy to check. Full Menu - Utilities - scroll down to Hardware Info, that will let you know if 4 GB is in two spots.

It is mind blowing to see how much stuff is crammed on the underside of the Hobbit playfield!

Quoted from kpg:

Anyone have any comments on doing repairs or work on it?

Similar to WOZ. It's basically a Williams pin and they snuck a motherboard and hard drive in there.

If you can do basic repairs. You'll be fine. And so far there haven't been many issues with the number of Hobbits going out.

And I would love to assist you, should the need arrive.

LTG : )

#304 7 years ago
Quoted from Pimp77:

I assume this looks right?

If so, what else could be causing the resets?

Looks right.

I'd try reseating the memory sticks.

Quoted from kpg:

what do you think, LTG?

I think you shouldn't have give me a thumbs down in the STNG GI thread.

#311 7 years ago
Quoted from kpg:

I thought you shouldn't have given me a bunch of thumbs down in other threads either.

What, two or three. I give them when deserved, not for correct advise.

#356 7 years ago
Quoted from sd_tom:

Might be good to collect settings too.

No.

If you are having a lot of resets, please email me the Stats.

Insert USB drive.
Enter Diagnostics: Reports->Stats dump
A file is created under \pinballstats on the USB drive

And if you know when it happens. Mode, multiball, entering initials, etc.

Send to [email protected]

Thank you,
Lloyd

For anyone that wants to know. I was having lots of issues since the recent update. Slowing down, stopping, lots of resets. I ran it by Keith. He said to make sure I had 8 GB total RAM in my game. I only had one 4 GB memory stick.

I didn't want to wait for JJP to send me one. So I went and got two of these :

http://www.microcenter.com/product/415422/Ballistix_Sport_XT_8GB_DDR3-1600_%28PC3-12800%29_CL9_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit_%28Two_4GB_Memory_Modules%29

I wanted a matched pair in there with cooling fins.

My game has been rock solid ever since.

LTG : )

#364 7 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

Can we use 1 8gig ram or does it have to be 2 4gig ram?

Either, just so you have 8 GB total. My preference was for two 4's.

LTG : )

#366 7 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

Is your ram side by side? Is there 2 slots or 4 slots for ram?

Side by side, two slots on Hobbit motherboard.

LTG : )

#368 7 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Are all Hobbits being shipped with 4GB of ram or only some?

All are shipping with 8 GB.

My game had symptoms indicating too low of RAM, which Keith identified, and as far as I know, the only Hobbit out there that this happened to.

LTG : )

#375 7 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

If there is only 2 ram slots, I can't switch ram around

Two RAM sticks, two slots. Pull them both out and put each one in the opposite of the one you pulled out.

LTG : )

#378 7 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

Lloyd. Can u tell us the specks we need for the ram? The voltage, timings, etc. not just any ram will work. I'm going to bestbuy after work and I want to get exactly what I need.

My link above - read the specs :

http://www.microcenter.com/product/415422/Ballistix_Sport_XT_8GB_DDR3-1600_%28PC3-12800%29_CL9_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit_%28Two_4GB_Memory_Modules%29

Main things is get two - 4 GB DDR3 1600

LTG : )

#381 7 years ago
Quoted from pinballinreno:

If you are going to best buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-8gb-ddr3-sdram-memory-module-black/1853347.p?id=1218297021353&skuId=1853347

This is a 2 stick kit and is very good RAM, 1600 speed and CL-9, exactly what you might need, if you want to try new RAM.

call them and see if they have it.

Those are great. And if you are going to buy some, go with the cooling fins like these.

LTG : )

#388 7 years ago
Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

That is exactly where I looked many times and it is not there. I also checked the coin box and bottom of the cabinet without luck.

Do you have an empty hook there ? If not please check the side of the left coin chute.

If empty hook - did you check under the huge metal box that holds the boards ? And through all the wires in the rear of the bottom of the cabinet ?

Thank you.

#621 7 years ago
Quoted from fnosm:

LLoyd,
Do you know what size these little un's are and how you would reconnect them?

18 gauge. I'd strip both ends, slide heat shrink tubing on one side. Twist together and solder. Slide heat shrink tubing over the solder joint and use what us non professionals use - a cigarette lighter to shrink the tubing. Cable tie the wires out of the way so it doesn't happen again.

Does anyone have the directions to update the code? I'd like to install the latest on arrival.

Go here - http://support.jerseyjackpinball.com:8081/helpdesk/WebObjects/Helpdesk.woa/wa/FaqActions/ under frequently asked questions use pull down and click on programing/software - select delta update - do that.

LTG : )

#800 7 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

When I use Unetbootin

Please don't use Unetbootin for delta updates. Only use that for a Full Install.

The current 1.21 update is a delta.

LTG : )

#808 7 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

Tried to update and nothing. Like it doesn't recognize the thumb drive, even though the thumb drive lights up.

The game doesn't recognize the thumb drive ? Then the 1.21 isn't on there right.

LTG : )

#809 7 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

Maybe this is talking about WOZ?

Yes, WOZ, ages ago.

LTG : )

#813 7 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

No clue why it wouldn't be

From Alex on the WOZ forum, maybe this will help.

"Download the file. Click on the zip on your mac. It will create a directory named the same thing as the zip file. double click on that directory.

inside it is a folder called woz_update

Drag JUST that folder (woz_update) to an empty usb stick.

Then go into the game menu / settings / usb update / hit enter."

LTG : )

#815 7 years ago
Quoted from metahugh:

Only insert it after the game tells you to,

JJP pins are a little different. For delta update, go to the game turned on, plug in the USB stick, then go to Utilities and do the update stuff.

LTG : )

#824 7 years ago

Do I need to do a full game install?

So I got it set up. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no lighting. Anybody know where to focus looking. I've gone through connections but don't see anything. Help please. Game seems to play.

Please look under the playfield. Find the rectangular B.A.G. board ( GI Bus Board - page D-34 in the manual ) There is a USB connector to it, push that in tight and you should be good to go.

LTG : )

#957 7 years ago

Is your plunger adjusted so that it hits the center of the ball ?

LTG : )

#959 7 years ago
Quoted from konghusker:

How do I adjust exactly?

Three screws inside hold the whole assembly on. Loosen a little and position where you'd like and retighten.

LTG : )

#961 7 years ago
Quoted from konghusker:

LTG : )

#1052 7 years ago
Quoted from system11:

I wonder if it's possible to hire one,

Depending where you are, you may be able to rent one.

LTG : )

#1075 7 years ago
Quoted from konghusker:

OK, I see that the two left side pop ups only have one screw in the back if their head. Now, how the heck do I get to it to put screw back in? Looks like the entire assembly underneath has to come off.

Hold the pop up up ( vice grips holds the carriage nicely ) and carefully so you don't lose them, remove the two clips and springs holding the trap door on. Then lower the mech.

Below the playfield are two connectors and 5 screws to remove the whole assembly.

Easiest then remove the whole mech from the bracket. Coil and plunger/carriage.

Remove the carriage from the plunger. Then remove the lock nut and plastic clip on the front of the figure head leaf blade switch stack, then the two screws holding the leaf blade and character head. Then you can get at the two screws that hold the head to the blade. It goes screws - character - metal plate inside the head. Screw them in and tighten down.

Then reassemble everything. And you have three others to look at if you forget where things go.

I hope this helps you,

LTG : )

#1244 7 years ago
Quoted from cscmtp:

I'd love the 3.1 code to anyone that has it. But also is there a way to keep current high scores before upgrading to 3.1 or no?

1.30P is testing, 1.30 isn't released yet.

It's a delta update, not a full install, so your scores will stay.

If you ever do a full install, back up your settings in Utilities first and put them back in after a full install. I believe this saves scores too.

LTG : )

#1326 7 years ago
Quoted from EricPinball:

I can not seem to accept my USB key by the pinball,

Are you trying to install a delta update ( don't use unetbootin if you are, unzip and extract to USB stick, go to Utilities - USB Update and hit Enter ) or a full install - then use unetbootin and do full install directions in rear of the WOZ or Hobbit manual, available online download at jerseyjackpinball.com

LTG : )

#2049 7 years ago
Quoted from FlipMyBalls:

Thanks for the help its extremely appricated as id be lost.

Solder joint looks good. You can remove the quarters, it appears plunger isn't getting enough power.

A big job but please put the full install 1.01 back in ( instructions in the rear of the manual ) which you can download here if you need it :

http://www.jerseyjackpinball.com/game-specific-downloads/the-hobbit-downloads/ and see if things improve, and then try a new download of 1.31

Maybe your update had an issue ?

LTG : )

#2067 7 years ago
Quoted from FlipMyBalls:

I tried to follow the wiring and the little bit i can see looks good before it gets lost in the big wire clump.

Check the rear of the manual for wiring pinouts on the back of the big metal box. Check there, inside, and to the I/O board. Look for loose connector, wire loose in a connector.

If nothing turns up, call Frank or Victor tomorrow at JJP ext 222 for more ideas.

is there a menu I can look at to see what switches has been pressed in the current game?

No.

Only thing is Tests - Switches - Matrixed, and Tests - Switches - Dedicated. To flag bad ones, and when you closed one they change colors on the screen. The game doesn't track what all happened during a game.

Check front, back, left, right. It is binding on something. You can loosen the screws holding the whole mech to the playfield and line it up a little.

Quoted from mbelofsky:

There are two brass screws that look like they could be adjustments but I don't see what they could adjust. Thanks. Michael

The lever that moves back and forth in the lockdown bar receiver, they lower or raise it so it locks into the lockdown bar easier. You can remove the glass, lift the playfield up and lean back, put the lockdown bar on and see if the lever needs to go up or down.

I worry that if I go in with a soldering iron and slip it will melt half the wiring in the machine in the process. Suggestions?

Remove the two screws holding the switch and move away from the wires as best you can.

I don't know your skill level, if you need it, Youtube is littered with short videos on how to flow solder.

And the LED/switch assembly, push it harder into the start button holder. They snap in very hard and pull out very hard.

Any idea as to what they were for Lloyd? Almost looks as though they wired for an upper left flipper!?

Originally Smaug was going to breathe fire and smoke, player controlled. Unfortunately the test game with this kept smoking up the playfield area so bad that you could no longer see to play. So the whole idea sans wiring harnesses that were already made, was eliminated.

How ever if you care to make such an apparatus yourself, you could still add it into the game.

Lloyd, the update doesn't work.

Did you follow the instructions on the website ?

If it doesn't work. It doesn't like the USB stick. You didn't get a clean download. Or didn't put it on the USB stick right.

You got the full install in right ? Then put the 1.90 on a USB stick with nothing else on it. Turn the game on. Then plug the USB stick in. Go to Utilities - USB Update, and follow the instructions on the screen.

The screen should say update in progress, after a bit go black. Don't worry. Let it run until the game reboots. then remove the USB stick and you are good to go.

LTG : )

Quoted from CyberNinja24:

simply go to JJP website and download? What is a delta upgrade?

Download here : http://www.jerseyjackpinball.com/support/

What I do for a delta update on my pc. Download it and place on desktop, appears as a zipped file. Put a USB memory stick into my computer and format to fat32. Then left click the file once, right click and select from the menu extract All and send to the USB stick.

When done go to the Hobbit with the game turned on. Open the coin door, insert the USB stick into the USB cable on the left side of the cash box. Go to Utilities - USB update - do what the screen says.

It should say "Updating" and then a little later the screen may go black - LEAVE IT RUN - DO NOT TURN GAME OFF. When it is done the game will reboot. Then unplug the USB stick. Close the coin door. Play and enjoy your game.

Or maybe a switch needs adjusting back from the rubber?

What I like to do is : turn the game off. Remove the slingshot plastic. Look down on the leaf blade switches. The front long one should just be resting on the rubber ring, not pushing it. The shorter rear one close enough so the slightest ball hit triggers it, yet vibration doesn't. A little tweaking should do it.

Also you might slide the rubber ring around the posts a little, so it seems to have even tension all around, not real tight on one side.

o switch coils, I assume you have to remove the two flap compression springs, lift off the steel flap, unplug the respective Molex connectors, & unscrew the 4 anchoring screws of the mechanism & pull entire mechanism out.

And then tear it all apart to switch coils. Getting it all back together and having it move freely is a huge time and aggravation ordeal. If it were me, I'd pull it out. Loosen, tweak, retighten, etc. etc. until it moves up and down freely.

I took one apart to make some pictures. And I marked where things lined up and screws went. And still wish I hadn't done that. I spent an hour tweaking things back to normal. I've included what torn apart looks like.

#2 - I noticed when playing a couple games before loading it up, that the Smaug heads turns and reaches its end stop and shakes for a few seconds like its not at its end stop. It looks like it’s at the end stop and he is facing you. Is this “shake” normal? Or is there a calibration/adjustment?

Make sure wires aren't in the way below the playfield.

The self test reports matrixed switch #51, Nori Target (stuck open). What am I looking for to fix it?

Check the manual to see where it is.

Then go to Tests - Switches - Matrixed, and push it and see if it works. If not check the usual things. Broken wire, needing adjusting.

Quoted from JamesMxP:

so I assume it’s an adjustment issue, but I’m a completely new at adjusting leaf switches, so I don’t understand what parts I adjust and which way.

Did you check it first in Tests - Switches - Matrixed ?

See the MM troll picture. Red arrow is pointing at one of the two leafs. Yellow arrow is pointing direction to make more sensitive, opposite that direction if stuck closed.

I would like to see a varying amount of balls in the multiballs, 2 ball for a mode, 3 for another, add-a-ball for another, 5 ball for a main one with add-a-ball etc.

This would break up the non-stop mutliball heaviness on this game.

Also add some surprises and more humor to the code PLEASE!

Please post this on the JJP WOZ forum. A better chance for your ideas to be seen and considered.

The character face is on a long leaf blade and a short one behind it. It's either stuck closed or so close vibration closes it going up. It needs adjusting.

I've attached a picture of a troll face from MM, same principle, you can see the leaf blade switch with arrows pointing to it.

Be sure he isn't rubbing the ramps or anything around him .You may need to loosen things, move slightly, and reassemble.

Some are finicky. Too little coin sticks, too much it drops through.

Be sure the mech is clean too and the moving parts move freely.

You can check the switches in Tests - Switches - Matrixed. The pop bumper leaf blade may need adjusting if the pop bumper skirt doesn't trigger it. The Beorn target might not have been hit recently. It is the stand up target on the right drain lane along the ball guide.

Smaug - A few connectors below the playfield under Smaug, I'd reseat them, be sure they are plugged in tight. And no loose pin or wire in the connectors.

Has anyone reattached theirs and if so, easiest way to access it? I'm trying to determine if I should go from the top of the PF or bottom. The giant drop target device doesn't make what should be a simple reattach any easier ; )

Stand up targets are screwed to the underside of the playfield. Impossible to solder a wire for the top side. The lugs are below the playfield. You may have to disconnect a couple of connectors and remove the drop target assembly. Once the drop targets are out of the way you should have room to resolder the wire without removing the stand up target.

No easy answer. Sorry.

One of them responds in test mode but the ball isn't triggering it when it rolls over. Would this mean that it's too high above the table? What would be the best way to adjust it?

Power off. Adjust the leaf blade switch below the playfield. Long one just resting on the plastic rod coming down from the roll over, bottom one far enough away so vibration doesn't set it off but the slightest ball hit does.

It might take some tweaking, but you should be able to adjust it to where you like it.
